Watching MeTV last night, I was a little surprised to see Ken Lynch (Capt. Barker in "The Manhunt", FBI agent in "A Black Day for Mayberry") on "All In the Family" - not as a gruff detective or cop, but as a refrigerator repairman trying to fix the Bunker's fridge. Maybe Aunt Bee should have called him when Andy told her to "Call the man!" Then, on "Dick Van Dyke", there was Mr. Jackson, the pompous magazine editor from "Andy on Trial" (Roy Roberts) , as a pompous sponsor of the Allen Brady Show - married to none other than the snooty Mrs. Bixby (Isabel Randolph) of the Women's Historical Society in "A Plaque for Mayberry". He is not a handsome leading man, but he is a good actor. Now I have a little quiz for all of the fans of TAGS. Emmett Clark was a desk sergeant at a police station in Washington D.C. on the night Abe Lincoln was assassinated. Also in the episode was the investigator who handled the hearing when the newspaper owner tried to get Andy removed from office. Last night, in another Twilight Episode, Clara Edwards appeared as a maid. And yet in another episode of Twilight Zone, Colonel Harvey was the captain of a rocket ship that delivered supplies to a man sentenced to 50 years on an asteroid millions of miles from Earth. Frank Gerstle who played Dirksen on The Manhunt episode of TAGS. He played the helicopter pilot on the I Love Lucy episode Bon Voyage. Not sure how many times I've seen that episode and I just noticed it today. While watching the Odd Couple last week, Clint Howard was on the episode called The Big Brothers. He liked Oscar more than he did Felix. Clint was 11 years old when he played on The Odd Couple. Ellen Corby, Will Geer, Denver Pyle, Mary Jackson and Helen Kleeb on The Waltons. The other night, I was watching "The Twilight Zone" episode titled "Black Leather Jackets" about an impending alien invasion. I thought the neighbor looked familiar; it took a little while before I realized it was none other than Denver Pyle (Briscoe Darling). Without any kind of an accent, and dressed in nice clothes, it took me awhile to be sure it was really him. Then, while watching a 1958 episode of "Gunsmoke", I thought the forlorn wife of a rancher looked familiar, but with her accent and lack of make-up I wasn't sure - then I looked it up and sure enough, it was Hope Summers (Clara Edwards). Both of them were far-removed from their Mayberry roles, showing how versatile and talented they were. I just saw Andy's cousin Gloria (played by Jan Shutan) from "Guest in the House" episode on an original "Star Trek" episode. She played a new Starfleet Lt. in the episode "Lights from Zetar" whose brain was taken over by aliens. Scotty was falling in love with her. The funniest line was at the beginning when Mr. Chekov said, "I never thought Mr. Scott would fall for a brainy woman." To that, Mr. Sulu responded, "I don't think he's even noticed she HAS a brain." LOL! I also saw our very own TAGS crook Ralph Neal (played by Arthur Batanides) who captured Barney with the help of Old Blue in the TAGS episode "Barney's Bloodhound" in a different "Star Trek" episode "That Which Survives". He played another Lt. who was a senior geologist who beamed down to a planet with Kirk, Spock and Sulu. He was killed by the beautiful woman alien Losira who simply touched him and destroyed all his cells. The alien was played by none other than Lee Meriwether who also played Andy Griffith's wife Mary Elizabeth Whitehead in his movie "Angel in my Pocket". That just goes to show that TAGS is everywhere! Hey, Mayberry friends. It's been a while since I've posted on the digest and let me say, I'm proud to be here. There were a couple of posts about Mayberry sightings so I'd thought I'd throw in my measley 3 cents worth. On December 7 we celebrated Pearl Harbor Day (the Morrison Sisters were really busy) and I watched the movie "Tora! Tora! Tora" on TV about the attack on Pearl Harbor. After viewing the movie awhile I discovered there was a plethora (how would Barney say that?) of actors in this movie that had also played on TAGS so I began to write them down: Edward Andrews, the lecturer Professor Hobart St. John, who was enamored of Aunt Bee because she looked like his late wife. Norm Alden played Tom Strongbow and also one of the opponents in Howard the Bowler. William Schallert (Quiet Sam). Ken Lynch, who played several police officers and captains on TAGS. Leon Ames (not the peanut butter sandwich Leon) who was the school principal in 'The Senior Play'. George Neise, Roger Courtney from 'The Club Men". Harlan Warde, the 'Spoiled Kid's' Dad. He also was in the episode 'Barney Fife, Realtor'. Edmon Ryan, who played one of the fake FBI agents (We Defy the Mafia!). Douglas McCairn was in the episode 'The Cannon', where he and his girlfriend were going to rob the mobile museum from Raleigh. There may have been more (it was a long movie!) It would seem that a true "alumni" sighting would refer to someone who was a regular on the show who appeared on another show. Let's face it, many of the character actors who appeared on TAGS were on other shows. You could watch old shows every day and likely see someone who appeared on TAGS. So, I think, a true alumni sighting would be if you saw Andy, Don Knotts, Francis Bavier, Ron Howard, etc on another show rather than people like James Best, Joanna Moore, Alan Hale etc. on another show. Alan Hale would technically be an alumni of Gilligan's Island rather than TAGS. I know James Best appeared on Gunsmoke more than he did on TAGS Would Andy starring on "Matlock" be a true alumni sighting, or Ron Howard on "Happy Days or Don Knotts on "Three's Company"? Guess everyone has his or her own interpretation of what an alumni sighting is! This is the weekend for TAGS alumni sightings. Yesterday on the MeTV episode of Bonanza, old Asa Bascombe appeared as a storekeeper. Then on The Rifleman, Miss Peggy appeared as a reporter's wife. Today on GRIT TV, the little old lady who clanked when Andy bumped into her appeared on the Walking Tall movies as Buford Pusser's mother. Also yesterday on Batman, Batman and Shame were facing off on the streets of Mayberry. That "Twilight Zone" episode Ken referred to not only starred Howard Morris and Jack Albertson (Aunt Bee's cousin), but "Skippy" (Joyce Jameson) too. Although not one of the better "Twilight Zone" episodes, Howard really showed his acting versatility by playing a mild-mannered accountant; a haughty billionaire; and even the President of the USA.
