My Hometown and Thelma Lou's last name
I currently live in the small town where I grew up. I left for college, which was about two hours away, so it wasn't hard to visit home on the weekends. Also, for several years I lived in another small town, but that was only 30 min. away. So I feel like I never really left home. And that's okay w/ me. I have my family here, and that's the most important thing. OK - so, Thelma Lou's last name...isn't it Lou??? ; ) Just kidding - I don't think it was ever mentioned on the show, until, like someone pointed out, it was mentioned when she came in for the class reunion and her married name was mentioned. But while she lived in Mayberry, I don't think we ever knew her married name, nor where she worked. Curious, curious... Jerry, everyone knows that Thelma Lou's last name was Whitfield. On the show from January 10, 1966, Thelma Lou walks up to Andy and Barney at the high school reunion, and says I would like you to meet my husband, Gerald Whitfield. But of course about 20 years later, Thelma Lou changed her name to Fife. Orville Hendricks - Peddling Butter and Eggs. Martha's last name is Hendricks. Just like Evan and myself. Real handy that, saves a lot of misremembering. Maybe I'm not as trained a noticer as you all, but I can't recall seeing an episode (or episodes)where Thelma Lou's last name is mentioned. Assuming Thelma Lou is one of those good old southern double first names, did we ever know Thelma Lou's last name? And come to think of it, did we know the last names of any of Barney's other girlfriends (Hilda Mae, Miss Rosemary, and of course that fun girl Skippy). The only ones where we know the last names, weren't real girlfriends since they had ulterior motives - Melissa Stevens (who turned out to be Gladys the matrimonial con artist), Agnes Jean Parker (who was only after information on the supermarket robberies), and Teena Andrews (who only needed a date for the world premier of her new movie).
