{Spam?} Floyd and Mr. Sims on the Twilight Zone
I just watched the humorous episode "Hocus Pocus and Frisby" and there was Howard McNear and Dabbs Greer, who made 4 TAGS appearances. This "Twilight Zone" episode was filmed in 1962, when Howard was also appearing in TAGS. They both were townspeople who got together in the general store/gas station, just like the older guys in TAGS would gather at Floyd's barber shop. Great character actors. Another "Twilight Zone" alumni sighting
Watching "Mirror Image" last night, the grumpy ticket clerk at the bus depot looked awfully familiar, so I looked him up, and sure enough, it was Joseph Hamilton, who appeared on TAGS 11 times, in various roles - mostly as one of the older "loafers" hanging around town. Can't believe I've watched that episode many times and it never hit me before. Also saw our TAGS "Founder", Sheldon Leonard, in a corny 1947 comedy on TCM called "The Fabulous Joe". He played the same type of character as he did the previous year in "It's A Wonderful Life" when he played the nasty bartender. "Twilight Zone" - and a question
Well, I have to nominate Dennis B. as the August "Noticer of the Month" - I mean, really - EIGHT alumni in one episode of the Twilight Zone! I've watched that episode and never noticed 8 TAGS alumni. And noticing the similarity of the main character's name to that of the NC Governor too - pretty impressive. I definitely remember maybe 3 references to The Twilight Zone in various TAGS episodes, but I can't recall which ones. Now my question: watched "The Ball Game" episode today, and I wondered if the ball field was part of the 40 Acres lot, or an actual Little League field in the area. Aerial pictures at the time (1966) don't seem to show any open area as big as the one where the game was played. I figured it must be a real ball field, not on the studio lot. But IMDB shows the only filming location as: Desilu Studios, Culver City, California. Just wonderin'. JOE from G.I. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Re: TAGS On Twilight Zone
It's hard to find episodes of The Twilight Zone where TAGS alumni do not appear. That's one of the reasons I watch TTZ, is alumni spotting. Re: TAGS On Twilight Zone
I can think of two times the Twilight Zone wasw mentioned. Once in The Haunted House: "There's plenty going on right now in the twilight zone that we don't know anything about and I think we ought to stay clear". The second one was in Citizen's Arrest when Otis came in and found Barney in jail. He said "I'm in the twilight zone when Andy was out of the cell and Barney was in. How The Twilight Zone helped me solve a TAGS mystery
Recently I watched a number of Twilight Zone eps, caught some great performances by a lot of TAGS alumni. Most notably George Lindsey played a small town deputy...and a really mean one at that! But then I saw the episode What's in the Box, with William Demarest as a man who sees disturbing images from his life on Channel 10 on his TV. What's unique is, his TV has its controls on the top. (it looks like a realistic TV to me, but after all, this is the Twilight Zone we're talking about.) Here are some pics: http://imageshack.us/a/img849/9770/knobontop5.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img32/9018/knobontop7.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img820/6415/knobontop8.jpg This brought to mind the debate over the TAGS episode Gomer the Houseguest, where Gomer and the Taylors are watching an adventure show on TV and Andy turns the TV off by twisting a knob on top. This took so many people by surprise that a few argued there was no such thing as a TV with controls on top and this must be a goof. http://imageshack.us/a/img842/250/knobontop12.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img59/1358/knobontop13.jpg So I did some research. Turns out a number of TVs did, indeed, have knobs on top of the set. http://imageshack.us/a/img5/165/knobontop10.jpg http://imageshack.us/a/img703/7831/knobontop2.jpg ...and this looks like the one Andy might even be turning off... http://imageshack.us/a/img818/5840/knobontop9.jpg Now, it's entirely possible they were listening to a radio show (although I doubt it) and it's entirely possible the set decorator couldn't locate the Taylor's normal set... http://imageshack.us/a/img198/5658/knobontop14.jpg ..so maybe the director passed off the Taylor's hifi as a TV set. Nonetheless, I think I've presented enough evidence, once and for all, to show that there were, indeed, TVs that had channel knobs and controls on top of the set, and the idea of such a TV is not unheard of and certainly not a goof. John Dehner Aunt Bee's Medicine Man on Twilight Zone
I was watching twilight zone last night on METV and who did I see but John Dehner playing Jared Garrity. A traveling peddler, Garrity, arrives in the little, recently-renamed town of Happiness, Arizona, offering to bring the townsfolk's dead back from Boot Hill. Initially, they don't believe him, but when he appears to resurrect a dead dog struck by a traveler's horse-drawn wagon, they do believe him. After performing the resurrection ritual, Garrity, in seemingly casual conversation, reminds the people about the dead and departed, almost all of whom were murdered: who died having a score to settle with whom, and so forth. The townsfolk grow uncomfortable at the thought of facing problems they thought buried with the dead; when one apparent resurrectee is seen approaching town, his brother, who shot the man himself, bribes Garrity to reverse the ritual, and the figure vanishes. Ultimately, everyone in town similarly pays Garrity to not revive their loved ones. Later that night, Garrity and his assistant (who was both wagon driver and resurrectee) ride away with the money, joking about how they cannot actually bring the dead back to life: they had simply performed a few smoke and mirrors tricks to con the townsfolk, and used a dog that was alive the whole time but simply knew how to play dead. After they have left the town, the last scene reveals that the dead really are rising from the grave, with one commenting that the peddler underestimates his own ability. The episode aired May 8, 1964, TAGS show he was in aired March 11, 1963. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Twilight Zone and TAGS
I have just recently begun watching old Twilight Zone episodes on hulu.com. I watched two last night and both had TAGS connections. In the first one a person was helping to hang a convicted murderer and the guy doing the hanging was our friend Parnell Rigsby, who lost the money that Opie found. In the second episode I watched there was a policeman in Mexico. His uniform looked like an exact replica of Barney's. Even the hat and gun belt looked identical. I couldn't quite tell if he had a swivel holster, but everything else looked almost identical. Which brings me to another point. Last week when I went to a car show in my Barney uniform an old gentleman approached me. He was with our city police department many years ago and he commented that my uniform looked just like the ones the traffic police used to wear years ago. Kenneth G. They're even in the Twilight Zone
While watching an episode of the Twilight Zone to on SYFY channel, wouldn't you know it?? I spotted two TAGS alumni. The episode was titled, The Bewitchin' Pool. Original airdate was June 19,1964. Written by Earl Hamner Jr. of the Walton fame. The father in the program is played by Tod Andrews aka Inspector Ralph Case who comes to Mayberry and gives Andy and Barney such a hard time. He is also in one other episode of TAGS as Mr. Franklin in A Girl For Goober. This is the episode where Goober claims to read 30 books a month on the dating questionnaire. 30 comics books, that is. The other TAGS alumni that was in this Twilight Zone episode was the little boy named George who runs away from home and lands at the Taylor's house. Something else that was very interesting about this TZ episode was that the lead child was played by the actress Mary Badham who's name is SCOUT in this episode. Barney Lives and the Twilight Zone
Me and Laura Lee Hobbs were getting ready for work over at the Dime Store and watching The Twilight Zone at the same time. Years of being trained noticers have enabled us to do many tasks ably at once, or at least allowed us to try many tasks at once and complete a couple every now and then. Today's episode was called The Trouble with Templeton and it aired in 1960. The character in the program played an actor and as he was reading a script (from the great beyond--this was the Twilight Zone, remember) he read a line that went, Barney, you're a scream, a real scream! Well, I said to Laura Lee Hobbs, Laura Lee Hobbs, did you just hear that. And Laura Lee Hobbs said to me, You bet I did. I'm a trained noticer too. That spooked us up both good and proper. And well, we grabbed up the babies, forced down our food, and headed straight over to the Dime Store and prayed. It just proves that not only will our Barney stay with us for as long as we have copies of TAGS, but the memory of this little darling is apt to pop up in the darnedest of places. Just keep your eyes and ears open, Trained Noticers. Me and Laura Lee Hobbs will. Lydia, come on over and see us at the Dime Store sometime. We'd love to have you; I'm having the hardest time keeping Laura Lee from crying. That girl loves to gossip, that is true, but she has the tenderest heart.
