RE: Floyd's Glasses
Keith, I agree that they did fit his personality! He sure completed the character of Floyd, down to the little bits. It's amazing to think that he passed away at such a relatively young age. I wonder if there are any interviews? Yes, I would love to hear Howard McNear talk about the show, or just anything, really. Over and Under, Clyde Barn Floyd: I demand satisfaction! I think the glasses really fit Floyd's personality/demeanor when he returned to the show.? I was shocked when I first found out his actual age, in that he was only about 57 when he had his stroke and he would have only been in his early 60's when he left the series, dying at the age of 63 in 1969.? He easily looked to be upper 60s or 70 after his stroke. ? I have always enjoyed Floyd's speech and mannerisms after his stroke...I would have loved to see or hear an interview (outside his Floyd character) around that time as I have heard from those on the show that he was very similar in and out of character...don't know if that applied to both pre-stroke and post-stroke. ? Floyd's glasses
During his early years in the show, Floyd wore a sort of wire rimmed glasses, up until his time away from the show, due to his recuperation from the stroke. After the stroke, his appearances were with the dark rimmed glasses. I've always assumed that the stroke necessitated a glasses change, but the more I think about it, I also wonder if it was part of a wardrobe update for Floyd? Well, I don't have any specific knowledge about this, but I'll throw in my two cents. As a life-long wearer of glasses, I can tell you that it is common to get new frames when you need new lenses, especially if it's been a few years since you last had them changed. During my adulthood, my eyes have changed very slowly. So when I do need new lenses, the old frames are usually out of style or just plain wearing out. My suspicion would be that Howard McNear needed new lenses during this time and simply got new frames while he was at it. Now, if the glasses were merely props, then I would say that the choice of frames would be up to the prop department or the producer/director. But Howard McNear was obviously a genuine glasses wearer, so I'm sure the change of frames was his choice. The wire frames he used to wear were commonly worn in the fifties and earlier. By the sixties, they were probably harder to find, so he got a more updated style. That would be my take on it, anyway. Ben Weavers glasses
In the episode where Ben Weavers store was getting robbed by the little old lady who clanked ( and little old ladys ought never clank ) , what was in the glasses on the table ? Ben Weaver accidentally shook them while hiding from Barney. I saw liquid in them or thought I did. Were there fish in them or maybe candles that floated in water ? thanks I will see you at Mayberry Days !! Holland Lexington NC Less than 1 hour from Mayberry ps. I can't tell, I wasn't wearin' my glasses
I've noticed that sometimes folks on TV wear glasses with perfectly flat lenses (you can tell by the reflection). Now I'm no eye doctor, but it seems to me perfectly flat lenses would have no effect on one's vision, which leads me to think those glasses are just part of the actor's costume. Why don't you ask Floyd to look at 'em? He's a barber. Paul Mulik As a photographer, I notice things like light sources and reflections. I've never seen any reflections off Floyd's glasses, so that would seem to indicate that they are empty frames. However, the other day as we were watching The Bank Job, I noticed reflections in Asa's glasses, so they are obviously real. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Yes, you're right. I have seen that, and you can tell if the lenses are pieces of flat glass or slightly curved, as true eyeglass lenses are. Asa's lenses looked like the real thing. Normally, if the frames have flat pieces of glass in them, you can still see reflections of light sources, but I've never noticed any reflections off Floyd's glasses, which is why I figured his are empty frames. And yet, the fact that he wears glasses in all his various roles surely means he needs them to see. However, I will now keep a watch out for that and try to note if I ever see those tell-tale reflections. Floyd's glasses
Awhile back, someone mentioned about Floyd's glasses and wondered if they were real or fake. As a photographer, I notice things like light sources and reflections. I've never seen any reflections off Floyd's glasses, so that would seem to indicate that they are empty frames. However, the other day as we were watching The Bank Job, I noticed reflections in Asa's glasses, so they are obviously real. Still, even in his roles in other TV shows and films, Howard McNear wore glasses. So I'm guessing that he really needed glasses but had the lenses removed when filming to avoid the dreaded reflections. Does anyone know for certain about this? I don't think I ever saw Aunt Bee wear reading glasses either - even when she and Clara were repairing mildewed band uniforms. Maybe she just stopped wearing them around other people. In addition to Mayberry Goes Bankrupt episode, Aunt Bee also wore her reading glasses in The Ball Game episode where she and Opie are reading the article Howard wrote in the newspaper.
