Watching MeTV last night, I was a little surprised to see Ken Lynch (Capt. Barker in "The Manhunt", FBI agent in "A Black Day for Mayberry") on "All In the Family" - not as a gruff detective or cop, but as a refrigerator repairman trying to fix the Bunker's fridge. Maybe Aunt Bee should have called him when Andy told her to "Call the man!" Then, on "Dick Van Dyke", there was Mr. Jackson, the pompous magazine editor from "Andy on Trial" (Roy Roberts) , as a pompous sponsor of the Allen Brady Show - married to none other than the snooty Mrs. Bixby (Isabel Randolph) of the Women's Historical Society in "A Plaque for Mayberry". Earlier this week on MeTV's Perry Mason, they showed "The Case Of The Trecherous Toupee".I noticed several TAGS alumni on the show.Otis was there as was Orville Monroe.But the obscure TAGS alumni on this show was Thomas Browne Henry.I have always enjoyed the acting of Mr. Henry. He is not a handsome leading man, but he is a good actor. Now I have a little quiz for all of the fans of TAGS. Thomas Browne Henry appeared once on TAGS, and without looking it up can you remember in which episode he appeared?Here are a couple of hints, he appeared on the show for only about a minute (he did speak), and he was not a resident of Mayberry. I killed the big gas bag.”, (The Case of the Prudent Prosecutor). Aunt Bee has a vital role in The Case of the Crimson Kiss. And you can’t forget the very first episode with Whitney Blake (The Case of the Restless Redhead) as she’s being pursued by some nefarious hoodlums. I’ve counted as many as 4 TAGS links in one episode. Even if you don’t care for the show, DVR some and fast forward to see how many you count. Emmett Clark was a desk sergeant at a police station in Washington D.C. on the night Abe Lincoln was assassinated. Also in the episode was the investigator who handled the hearing when the newspaper owner tried to get Andy removed from office. Last night, in another Twilight Episode, Clara Edwards appeared as a maid. And yet in another episode of Twilight Zone, Colonel Harvey was the captain of a rocket ship that delivered supplies to a man sentenced to 50 years on an asteroid millions of miles from Earth. I usually don't mention 'alumni sightings' because, knowing the caliber of the actors and actresses who appeared on TAGS, it isn't really surprising to see them in other shows of that era. I do, however, get a little kick when I see them in much older, or much newer, movies and TV shows. I have watched a few episodes (mostly from 1951-1954) of "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" lately and have seen Parley Baer (Mayor Stoner), Tol Avery (Ben Weaver), Willis Bouchey (O'Malley and others), and Charles Lane (Mr. Frisbee). But the best were seeing a young Betty Lynn as Virginia Beasley (the daughter of the Allen's postman, Gracie was giving her a baby shower) and seeing Bob Sweeney, who directed 80 episodes of TAGS, playing the role of George and Gracie's new gardener. I have also been watching Christmas episodes of older TV shows and just today I saw Barney Phillips (escapee Eddie Brooke) and Parley Baer (Mayor Stoner) in a 1957 episode of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, George Petrie (safe-cracker Joe Layton) in a 1955 episode of "Ethel and Albert", and then Mary Treen (Rose and others) in a 1954 episode of The Red Skelton Show. Also, I finally watched 1945's "Christmas in Connecticut" for the first time and saw Dick Elliott (Mayor Pike), John Dehner (Col. Harvey), Walter Baldwin (the first Floyd), and Mr. Schwamp. Oh, and the next time you watch "North By Northwest" starring Cary Grant (JudyJudyJudy), see how many future TAGS actors and actresses you can spot. It is the most I have noticed in any movie other than the Don Knotts ones. Frank Gerstle who played Dirksen on The Manhunt episode of TAGS. He played the helicopter pilot on the I Love Lucy episode Bon Voyage. Not sure how many times I've seen that episode and I just noticed it today. While watching the Odd Couple last week, Clint Howard was on the episode called The Big Brothers. He liked Oscar more than he did Felix. Clint was 11 years old when he played on The Odd Couple. Ellen Corby, Will Geer, Denver Pyle, Mary Jackson and Helen Kleeb on The Waltons. Yesterday in the grocery store parking lot a woman came up to me and said how much she liked my Mayberry bumper stickers and how she'd been to Mt. Airy many times; felt like meeting up with a long-lost relative! This morning I spotted Otis on the Brady Bunch; he was portraying some cartoon king on a children's program that Bobby was watching. He appeared as Santa one time and promised Cindy her mama would get her voice back for Christmas church services so she could sing her solo; it was heartwarming as I remember. I've collected a few Andy Griffith/TAGS sightings outside of TAGS and thought I would pass them along... - Andy and The County Boys are featured in a display on Bluegrass in Pop Culture at the new International Bluegrass Hall of Fame and Museum in Owensboro KY along with Martha White Flour, Beverly Hillbillies, Flatt & Scruggs in The Story of Bonny and Clyde. - IBMA Hall of Fame includes The Dillards, Clarence White and Roland White and their plaques reference them being on TAGS. A photo of The Dillards (probably taken early 90's) is featured prominently as you walk upstairs to the Hall of Fame room. - IBMA has been collecting oral/video histories from various bluegrass artists. The interview with The Dillards was done with all four original members in 2006. It is 2+ hrs long and I listened to about half at the museum. Try as I might to find its location online, access may only be thru the Museum or Univ of Kentucky. I'll share a link if I can find it. - Ray Stevens recently opened up "Caba-Ray" in Nashville and there is a slide show of photos that cycle through at the Piano Bar and they are wallpaper in the performance room. Andy Griffith is featured in one of the photos with The Jordanaires, who sang regularly with Elvis. I would guess this photo was from the late 70's based on hairstyle and apparel of one of the singers. Andy is post-Mayberry/pre-Matlock. - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is a show on Amazon Prime. The second season takes place in the late 50's and there is a scene with someone watching TV and it is Andy Griffith as a guest on a television show. It is just playing in the background on Mrs. Maizel and I did not recognize the host, but based on IMDB, I bet it his 1957 appearance on The Steve Allen Show. On one episode of Gunsmoke, Denver Pyle was the bad guy...not just a bad guy but a REAL BAD guywalked up on the man's porch and when the man opened the door, Denver shot him in the chest! Not like our Brisco!! Then another episode, James Best was in jail for killing someone, his father was Colonel so and soand James kept begging his daddy to get him out of jail, but the colonel didn't want to. James was set to hang, the scaffolding was built. then the Sheriff came in and told him his daddy had it all set up, had paid him a big amount to fake the hanging. The rope would let him down onto some barrels where he could grab the rope, take it off his neck, and the undertaker would declare him dead, haul him off in a coffin. When they got to the cemetery there would be a horse waiting for him, and then the sheriff stuck $1000 in his pocket his daddy said to give him so he could get to Mexico and not come back. The hanging took place. The sheriff went behind the scaffold. The coffin was loaded onto a wagon and started off to the cemetery. The sheriff walked up to Colonel and saidsurprise ending..."Here's your thousand bucks back." The other night, I was watching "The Twilight Zone" episode titled "Black Leather Jackets" about an impending alien invasion. I thought the neighbor looked familiar; it took a little while before I realized it was none other than Denver Pyle (Briscoe Darling). Without any kind of an accent, and dressed in nice clothes, it took me awhile to be sure it was really him. Then, while watching a 1958 episode of "Gunsmoke", I thought the forlorn wife of a rancher looked familiar, but with her accent and lack of make-up I wasn't sure - then I looked it up and sure enough, it was Hope Summers (Clara Edwards). Both of them were far-removed from their Mayberry roles, showing how versatile and talented they were. Flipping thru the channels and stopped on the "Decade" channel about two weeks ago and they were showing 'Laugh-In', George 'Goober' Lindsey was being kissed by Jo Anne Worley. CoziTV is showing 'Alias Smith and Jones' on Saturday and this past week three different TAGS alumni were in the episode 'The Girl in Boxcar #3', Alan Hale, Jr. (big Jeff Pruitt), Claudia Bryar (Jennie Boone), and Norman Leavitt (Wally, Gil and other characters). I just saw Andy's cousin Gloria (played by Jan Shutan) from "Guest in the House" episode on an original "Star Trek" episode. She played a new Starfleet Lt. in the episode "Lights from Zetar" whose brain was taken over by aliens. Scotty was falling in love with her. The funniest line was at the beginning when Mr. Chekov said, "I never thought Mr. Scott would fall for a brainy woman." To that, Mr. Sulu responded, "I don't think he's even noticed she HAS a brain." LOL! I also saw our very own TAGS crook Ralph Neal (played by Arthur Batanides) who captured Barney with the help of Old Blue in the TAGS episode "Barney's Bloodhound" in a different "Star Trek" episode "That Which Survives". He played another Lt. who was a senior geologist who beamed down to a planet with Kirk, Spock and Sulu. He was killed by the beautiful woman alien Losira who simply touched him and destroyed all his cells. The alien was played by none other than Lee Meriwether who also played Andy Griffith's wife Mary Elizabeth Whitehead in his movie "Angel in my Pocket". That just goes to show that TAGS is everywhere!
