Jac, I think it has a very good look overall; but you are right, it seems a little bit off in places To me, the orange bottom stripe (with grey grid) on the dark grey blocks (where you display information for individual plays, etc) does not work well once you get to the bottom of the page - it conflics with the similar wide footer there. Have you tried moving your footer above the orange bar, to fill that space a little? I also think there should be a little more space between the orange bottom stripe and the text on those information boxes (on the dark grey background) on the Projects page (http://www.granary.ie/new/granary_projects.asp) - looks like it just got overlooked. On the Contact page - why not use the same background and font color as you did throughout the rest of the website? And the seems to be too much space between the end of the form and the orange stripe. Hope the above makes sense... OMG!! I'm going off my game here! I've been at this for the last few hours & I'm going round in circles. I know there's something wrong with the look of the page(s) but I can't put my finger on it. think it might be the bottom parts of the rounded rects. containing the content... but I can't get anything better going. Does it look too cheesy? too orange? anybody got a better suggestion? Then when it comes to the "contact us" page - the light grey bg of the tables containing the address/emails/form - that doesn't work either does it? think i need a break :o) ... ohh frustration is an understatement. please let me know what you think might be the problem & where I'm going wrong with it. so fed up with it by now. http://www.granary.ie/new/index.asp as you'll see - placeholder images & text being used in places through out the site. tia jac venting while lost in the woods. [wdvltalk] Re: Small town
From what I can tell... It's a matter of perception. "Programming" is perceived to be very difficult and time consuming (and sometimes it is). For ASP Database programming we list $200/hour on our price sheet and we "discount" that to $150/hour when the client signs a contract for long term service. For general ASP/PhP programming we list at $150/hour with a discounted rate of $110/hour. For Windows application programming (the bulk of the work that I personally do), we list at $250/hour with no discounts. We do offer a 30% discount on the complete contract if we retain the rights to the program we create (so that we can resell the application). However, if the client keeps the rights to the application then we offer no discount. If we are required to sign a non-compete (we'll won't create a similar application for anyone else) then we add a $10,000++ surcharge, depending on the industry. On the database programming side, the bulk of the work we do is integrating data from existing applications (bookkeeping, inventory, etc.) into web-based applications for access by employees and customers. As an example, we're finishing up a job for a local furniture chain (5 stores) so they can share inventory with each other over the web. It's strictly so that their sales people know what's available in the other stores. The total cost of the project was $9,300 which included a new server at their main office running Win2k Server and IIS to host the app/data. We also had to integrate the system with their accounting software (Peachtree). What I can't understand is that people will easily believe that programming is difficult and expensive and don't fuss (for the most part) about pricing, but when you tell them that "designing" graphics for a web site is also a difficult process, they don't believe it. I guess they think that all artists are hippies or something. --Dave At 8/28/2003, you wrote: > We actually do very well with anything that requires programming (my > personal forte). [wdvltalk] RE: SSI browser sniffing
Hi Abigail, I apologize for the delay in response...things are crazy around here. I took a look at the alternative layout and I like it very much. The link is prominent enough that it won't get lost in the shuffle, yet it doesn't detract from the menu. Good job. Let us know once it is completely finished! Will Stewart -Original Message- From: Abigail Marshall [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, August 24, 2003 6:55 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [wdvltalk] RE: SSI browser sniffing On Saturday, August 23, 2003, 6:03:23 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] commented: cwc> It works well enough on IE 6. The question is why would you want cwc> something like that on your site; especially before your menu? Will, I want to clarify my other answer to you. The page with the browser-sniffer is under development, and I have been working several months on getting the FUNCTION to work - that is, getting the javascript working, cross-browser checking, etc. LAYOUT is something I hadn't given much thought to -- for testing purposes, it was easiest for me to have the form near the top of the page where I could see it and work with it easily. Also, because of a technical reason related to the way the script itself is coded, the it is difficult to move the color/font changing forms around, as depending on their position on the page, the javascript may need to be recoded with various layout adjustments. I hadn't even intended to ask for a site review of this page yet, except I mentioned the form in another context, and when Rudy got an error message on the form - I remembered that I had a buggy browser sniffer in place. That got me motivated to fix the browser sniffer, and once I had done that I wanted to test it. Your comment about layout is very useful, and actually prompted me to develop an alternative layout which I will probably adopt: http://www.dyslexia.com/build/index4.html (Note, the "Customize Site" button does NOT work - this page has been redone for purposes of layout only). I think your comment about layout was helpful and important. You should know that what I am doing is redesigning the interface at http://www.dyslexia.com/ I am working with a situation where basically I'm trying to take our site into the 21st century (The Wayback Machine at archive.org tells me that those hokey graphic navigation buttons were on the site back in December 1998). I'm working with a situation where I want to make some big changes, but for reasons of usability I don't want to make them too drastic -- that is, we don't want the new interface to scare away the users who are used to the "old" (current) one. This is a site for dyslexia - 46% of our site visitors say that they are dyslexic - which is why the users are going to be delighted with the site customization form, but they won't be able to find it without a very prominent link. I'm also sure to get a few complaints from users who will miss the picture-based navigation - even though the new array is much more compatible with screen readers. Anyway, I do want to thank you - it is helpful to me to have feedback on overall usability. It will still be awhile before changes go live, because it is a big site and I have to upgrade all the pages to be CSS-compliant and recognize the style-changing cookie - but it's good for me to have constructive feedback along the way. -Abigail . [wdvltalk] Re: Video WebCast
I'm coming into this discussion late, but I think I have some arguments that might benefit. I don't understand why you should blur faces for protection. Unless the face in the pictures is large and looking dead on, there is not much the perverts out there could do with it. As far as legalities go, according to the law in the United States, if photographs or video are taken in a public place and you are not using them for commercial profit, you do not run any legal risks of being sued successfully. I got the following off the internet: "The basic rules are: "Taking a picture in a public place is generally always legal. But if that place is part of a secured emergency area like a police crime scene line or fire or a riot, you may get arrested for being where you shouldn't whether you're taking pictures or not. And not all street cops know the law, so you may wind up getting arrested anyway (it happens to news photographers who ARE acting legally about once a month in the US). "If you are not using the picture to promote something (i.e. commercial use - advertisement, service, etc.) you can 'publish' a picture taken in a public place without permission (e.g. a release). Publishing includes the Web (my paper has a web site and runs some of the same pictures that run in the newspaper.) Certainly 'editorial' use - reporting on the state of the world - is generally protected. And editorial use can be extended to cover street photography (a la HCB, Winograd, Erwitt, et al) even if the 'event' being reported about is just a gesture or expression or moment. "Caveats: If, in publishing the picture, you imply something about the person (as in a headline or caption) that is possibly defamatory or even just untrue, you may be liable for libel, but a model release may not help in that case anyway. The New York Times (or their Sunday magazine) got sued for running an anonymous but recognizable telephoto street shot of a black man in executive clothing with a story about token blacks on Wall Street, and lost. Because the implication was that THIS man was a token black on Wall Street. "Also, the cover of a publication (and by extension, possibly the splash page of a web site) has been considered commercial use in some cases because it 'promotes' the magazine on news stands - in effect it's an advertisement for what's inside the magazine. It is also possible that a 'portfolio' web site for a photographer intended to bring in business may count as 'commercial' usage, since it is 'advertising' for the photographer. In theory even putting a picture in your print portfolio could be considered 'advertising' for your services if you show it to potential clients - if some court decides to rule that showing it constitutes 'publication'. "Also, there is still some question about 'fine art' usage, if, for example, you are selling prints of the picture for profit. Is that 'commercial' use? My paper sells reprints of pictures to the public (those that have already run in the newspaper) as do other papers/ publications, and I've never heard of such use requiring releases beyond what was required to publish the picture in the first place. "Final blanket caveat: the law is always being tweaked by rulings on new cases, new definitions, new technology (eg, the Web). So what is generally considered legal or illegal (or liable for civil action) may not be next week. Even more finally, you can always be sued for almost any reason if someone wants to, even if the law eventually proves to be in your favor." It would be terrible if by some fluke the wrong person saw someone in one of your posted shots and someone got hurt as a result. Modern technology makes so much so easy we forget the additional risks. And that we need to be aware of additional responsibilities. Just because it's become so easy to put strangers in public view, so easy that we don't even think about it, doesn't mean that we shouldn't think about it. Also consider this. If someone has had a history such that they would have reason to not want to be seen in a public forum, then suggesting they should be afraid to go out in public for fear of having their picture wind up on a website would be nothing short of cruel.
