Elisa,

Don't feel targeted. :) This stupid list has put my account
on "hold" (stopped sending me individual emails) over half
a dozen times over the last three months - claiming that
emails to my address were bouncing. Funny thing is, though,
that no one else, nor any other list I'm subscribed to, had
any problem getting through to me. It did become irritating
after the third or fourth time of having to log into the
website and "reactivate" it when my mail box is not having
any noticeable problems. I just attribute it to incompetent
programming and go on. :)

When you post to WDVL, your message gets sent to each email address on the
list. By some bizarre logic of the list operators, if any of those email
addresses has a problem the bounce message gets returned to you (who can do
nothing about it) rather than to a list administrator (who could remove the

[wdvltalk] bouncy bouncy 2nd time

2004-04-07 Thread Smile-Poet
Gosh, I am having a busy time today. I sent a bit from a header of a mail
I keep getting to ask::

>Am I the only one repeatedly getting this bounce message?<

Which was bounced back because I had used (in the cut and paste) I -- N --
T -- M (without dashes and spaces) and this was rejected because:

This header is usually only included by automated
email programs, such as
"vacation" programs

So now I know at last how to recognise this type of irritaiting but
unimportant mail.Hope it helps others too.

not easily, no

i assume your "date" field is not actually a DATE or DATETIME column?

what is it, VARCHAR?

you will have to itemize all the strings you want to find:

 where `date` like '%1832%'
or `date` like '%1833%'
or `date` like '%1834%'
or `date` like '%1835%'

tip: don't use reserved words for column names, you are only asking for
syntax errors

[wdvltalk] mysql query

2004-04-07 Thread Anitha Paruchuri
Hi,
I am trying to get records from a database within a date range
something like 1834-1835. I have written a simple query like "Select *
from db where date between 1834 and 1835;"

But, the problem is that the date field is not consistent in the
database, the records have dates like
April 5, 1835;
1835;
April 1835;
Apr 1835 etc.

Is there a way I can use 'like' and 'between' in my query to get all
the dates between 1834 and 1835 however the date is formatted?

I would like to combine the queries
Select * from db where date like '%1834%';
and
Select * from db where date between '1834' and '1835''

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks in advance.
Anitha

Dave followed with:
I just dump M$ Office completely and use OpenOffice, it'll still

allowing executable code within a document. Why, oh why, oh why does a
document need executable code (macros) in it? The only exception would
be spreadsheets...

Tim submits a simple example:
Our law firm submits dozens of legal documents a day - some to clients,
some to the courts, some to other services and users. These documents
are not always generated from scratch - otherwise, we'd have dozens of
secretaries sitting around pounding on dozens of word processors, making
dozens of mistakes in the process. Many of the documents are built from
databases using "macros" or "executable code" simply because that's the
only cost-efficient way of doing so (and accuracy is paramount).
Moreover, many documents require change tracking as they're passed back
and forth between parties, and must be in a specified format (usually
some version of Word or WordPerfect). These activities require
scripting that have access to resources (i.e. databases) outside of the
the document's sandbox. While I'm not defending executable code in
documents as always appropriate, I do see it as a viable solution to
many business situations, particularly those that are tightly regulated.
I daresay if we were required to fill out two or three dozen electronic
forms for each website we build we'd be looking for ways to automate it.

within the limits of the law, and yet last November still ended up with
a broken wrist due to someone else's negligence. Power =
responsibility. You don't always need that much power...that's where
the market makes room for other solutions, like OpenOffice. Or vi. :-)

[wdvltalk] Re: PHP book update

2004-04-07 Thread john . f . hughes

Franni,

When I'm learning something from scratch I usually try the Peachpit Quick
Start books.

A quick search on Amazon throws up this.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321245652/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/202-1038935-1487825

The reviewers seem positive enough about it...

I don't have anything to do with the company or anything like that, and I
haven't read this book myself, but what I have used by them before has been
pretty effective and economic.

John.

[wdvltalk] Re: PHP book update

2004-04-07 Thread Franni Vincent
Folks,

This is the book I'm working off.

PHP and MySQL Web Development, 2nd edition
Luke Welling, Laura Thomson
I'm managing to work through it happily enough and would recommend it based
on progress so far, i.e. about page 200.
John.

This is a good second step - I use it too - but it still assumes a
little knowledge. For absolute beginners I stand by what I said weeks
ago when Joseph was starting out, that the Dummies php/mySQL guide's
the best starting point for someone who has absolutely zero knowledge
at all.
