[wdvltalk] Registering an existing domain
Hello list, We have a client who wants to try and grab a domain which is currently registered but due to expire this weekend (it's a .org.uk, FWIW). There isn't a website or any other sign of life there at the moment, and as it was originally registered six years ago we're hopeful that the owner has given up on it and is planning to let it lapse. Assuming it doesn't get re-registered this week, has anyone got any info on how we could best get our hands on it? Is there a grace period where the existing owner gets first refusal, or can we just register it on Monday morning like any other domain? Can't remember the exact terminology as I'm up to my neck in XML and really crappy parsers but I think after a domain lapses there is a certain period (detagged I think) where the domain is shut off from the net but is still tied to its existing owner allowing them to renew (just in case they forgot or something). I think this state lasts for a few months. If the domain is not re-registered by the end of this limbo state then it comes open for purchase. Only at that stage will your client be able to grab it. If the domain is not re-registered by the end of this limbo state then it comes open for purchase. Only at that stage will your client be able to grab it. That's about the size of it. Peter, I think if you look at the Nominet Site, buried in there is a note that you can record an interest in a name that lapses with a view to doing what you want. Couldn't find it with a cursory hunt, but I've emailed Nominet anyway to ask them what the best approach is. [wdvltalk] trying to do a simple python install on shared linux webhost via SSH
Hi guys, I'm trying to do something thats probably very elemtary but i'm stuck, can anyone please help? I'm trying to install Moin (an opensource wiki creator) via on my linux webhost via Terminal over SSH. I have the following line as an example in the help docs: python setup.py --quiet install --prefix=$HOME --record=install.log so in trying to do the substitution I put: python /Users/me/Desktop/moin/setup.py --quiet install --prefix=$HOME --record=install.log but I get the error: python: can't open file '/Users/pete/Desktop/moin/setup.py' should I be including localhost or my ip in the reference? also will i need to change $HOME to something like my public root folder '/htdocs/' ? or my full website path? Any help or advice much appreciated. Thanks. There was an article on Sitepoint I recently read about expired domain names. I forgot to renew my domain on the first of January this year, and a couple weeks later was able to renew it. I assume, due to the grace period.
