Thanks David. Guess I just wasn't too observant. I tend to ignore all the stuff at the bottom of the email. And yes, it's been very quiet. I'm guessing that people have identified /joined some other lists that are answering their questions. I joined WiseWomen and CSS-D, both of which generate email at an amazing rate and are tough to keep up with but are good in terms of answers for their specific focus. Does anyone else have lists that they rely on? Riva, I'm going to add my 2 cents worth on one point though in general, I agree with Deb and Ross. If you do continue to work with them, insist on a better picture. The out of focus one they've given you looks horrid as a web page and it will totally detract from anything else you do, especially if it's the full page background. I think Microsoft have hired some half-decent designers as their Vista site is actually really nice visually. You'll need a high-quality, crisp image to work with to pull this off, but it's a good start anyway. Riva, Do you have the web developer's toolbar for Firefox downloaded? If you do, try running your page through the CSS validate and the HTML validate under Web Developer | Tools. The CSS validate is reporting 9 errors and the HTML validate is reporting 3 errors. I don't know that that's what's causing the problem with Firefox but it's a start. Hi, I didn't spend a lot of time reviewing this site but I have to disagree with Drew on the color scheme. The clashing blues would send me running as a customer. I'd wonder if these guys' design sense was so bad that it would also be reflected in their work. I think the marbleized grayed-out blue would be complimented by a background that is medium tan/light clay color... with a cream color font for the contents of the left sidebar. I would replace the bright blue #3300CC with something like #E0E191 - R224,G225,B145. Leave the grayed blue boxes that back up the sidebar text alone and use a cream color for the font -- something somewhere around #F1F0AB - R241,G240,B171. Would look classier than the clashing blues. Just my 2 cents. Hi, I am working on redoing a website that has about 200-300 speeches, white papers, documents, etc. that currently each have their own webpage. I would like to switch that to (I think) a database of documents that would be searchable by author, date, publishing source, topic and keywords within the document. Any recommendations on how to go about that? Would also need to have a content management feature that would allow a non-html coder to add speeches, documents to the data base without creating a new web-page. I am contemplating working with drupal for a part of this website -- not all of it. Believe it or not, they're mostly hard-coded html. There are a few pdf's in there. I expect we'll have to convert them to a regular text document before loading in a database unless someone has some other good ideas! Having observed my own experience with Dell service as a small business and a close friend's experience having purchased her Dell as a consumer (should have registered as small business but didn't), make sure you ARE registered as a small business. Then if you can afford it get the 'Complete Care' package or whatever they call it now. If anything goes wrong... anything at all... someone dumps soda on it, you drop it and break the screen, they repair at their cost. My laptop stopped recognizing the cdrom drive; I now have a new motherboard, 2 new memory bars and a new cd-rom drive courtesy of Dell. My friend's keyboard stopped working over a month ago. She's spent much time on the phone. They've sent the wrong keyboard twice at her expense and she still doesn't have the right keyboard. She calls it Dell Hell. As far as that Inspiron is concerned, I saw it in the brochure Dell sent recently and recommended it to another friend. She's not a gamer so I didn't check into the specs on the onboard video card... but it is onboard, it is not a separate video card. Don't know if that's important. It looks like a really good deal. Hi, I'm a relatively new subscriber to this list and have been lurking. I support a website that uses Movable Type for its blog. And Invision for its forum even though Invision also has blog software. Don't ask me why; I didn't set it up. Movable Type is very straightforward to administer. The Invision blog software looks like it's pretty straightforward as well. I've done some investigation of the Scoop and Drupal software which aren't so simple but very robust. I've not found a good comparison of blog software thus far though I'd be very interested in seeing one. Riva, It's been awhile since this happened (2002) so I may not have all the details quite correct but I got a lemon Dell Latitude C640 on the first ship. Among my chats with various people at Dell that I recall, there was mention that if the computer was within a 30-day time frame from when it was built and delivered, the handling and replacement procedures were a little different. I went back to sales and after they confirmed that the computer was fried (something with motherboard), they had me re-order the computer and they replaced it. You might try going back to the sales people and throwing a temper tantrum, so to speak. It was very important that all this happen within the 30-day period. After that the procedures were different.
