[wdvltalk] Re: Image Collections

2003-01-08 Thread Cheryl D. Wise
I just got it last night and haven't had much time to look at it. There
seems to be 20 categories that cover about anything you could think of. I
did a quick search using 'birthday' as a keyword since I have an online
birthday card to make for the guy who teaches the php section of the web
development class I teach (can't cover all the languages myself).

It returned 2362 images from balloons to presents. BTW, it also includes a 3
month subscription to their online image collection as well. If you want to
extend that to a year it is another $69 but that lets you see if you would
use the larger collection before buying it.

Cheryl,

Once I started checking into the Hemera products I began wondering why no
one had mentioned these less expensive packages. It made me think that they
were seriously lacking or something. Does this collection cover a variety of
subjects?

I'm trying to find a decent image collection that doesn't cost an arm and a
leg. We are considering using images on our external website for each report
we issue. The topics range from schools to nursing homes, to unemployment,
to casinos, to ball parks - basically anything the state might be involved
in.

Hemera Technologies has 'Photo-Objects 50,000 Premium Image Collection' for
$79.99 through Amazon. The reviews are rather mixed.

I've also found IMSI MasterClips 500,000 for $9.99 and Photo Gallery 5,000
for $1.99 through Cyber City Software. - No reviews available.

I'd like to know what you recommend. What you've used in the past...

If we only buy one of them, is one preferable over the other?

They both link together, but I think I've used more images from II than I -
I'd want to sign up for their online service too if I could ever justify
the cost ... I contact Hemara every three months with a 'When's the next
Photo Objects coming out?' email - perhaps if everyone else who's using it
did too, they'd bring out an upgrade.

Mind you, they haven't got a sitar in either collection, which is what
client's asked for today it's when you have to go back to doing your
own clipping paths that you REALLY appreciate the beauty of someone else
having done the work for you

I'll ditto Dwayne once again. If you must only get one, it really makes no
difference which one you do get, but should you be able to get both, it simply
broadens your selections... These disk sets in combination with an online resource
like clipart.com and the occasional visit to a stock photo-house's online component
has gotten me through quite a few jobs.

Good Luck Cheryl,

2003-01-07 Thread Franni Vincent
I find clip art works if you're prepared to use it as a starting point -
import it into a graphics program recolo(u)r and/or tweak it to fit what
you're doing. I've been collecting clipart since my first Mac, which was
in the late 80s, so have a accumulated a lot of it over the years... tis
always the way that you can never remember where you've filed the perfect
item when you need it in a hurry...

But I much prefer photo-objects nowadays - photos almost always look better...

Franni

I just went there. The family version looks good for my purposes. My boss
keeps wanting to sprinkle
clip art all over everything. I loathe and despise most clip art. I had
ONE cd of clip art I really
like, lots of nice woodcuts. Then I change o/s to Win 2000 and could no
longer use that cd.

Since then, CD-RWs have been invented. I'm thinking of selecting the clips
I like and just burning them
on to a CD but sorting would be a real problem.

I totally agree. Most clip art looks really cheesy to me. Every so often I'll see
something using clip art that actually looks nice and I'm always amazed.

Cheryl,

I just bought the Hemera's Photo Clip Art 100,000 images at Microcenter for
$35.99 (Mac version $57.99 so guess which one I bought). I looked at the 2
Hemera versions you mentioned and decided to go with the less expensive but
larger collection.

I don't know how its images fit vs. the other 2 for your needs but for mine
it was the better option.

Cheryl,
Photo-Objects Volume III are both great! I have both and use them on a regular
basis. You can export the graphics at specified resolutions in various image formats
including .tif with alpha layers that can be made into selections to drop the
backgrounds. 4-5 clicks and you have an exported clean image ready to be dropped into
your next project. Personally, I wouldn't pay $79 for it though, they have both been
out a couple of years now and I believe I only paid around $50 apiece at CompUSA...
