RE: [wdvltalk] "Web site" or "website,

2005-04-12 Thread David Blakey

Unless David can come up for a reference on that one I'll leave web page as
two words.
My view is that if Chambers doesn't include it, it isn't English. Chambers
doesn't.

RE: [wdvltalk] "Web site" or "website,

2005-04-12 Thread David Blakey

Got a cite for those style guides? Something I want to send to my editor.

The only British one that I know of on the Web [sic] is the Guardian's.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/styleguide/page/0,5817,184822,00.html
The Telegraph doesn't seem to have a style guide at all. The ones for The
Independent and The Times are not visible on the Web. The Economist's and
the Financial Times' have not been updated recently enough to include
'website'.

I was sure that internet.com had one for the Web Developer's Journal and
other publications, but I can't find it now.

Roget uses 'website' if that helps. The Cambridge Dictionary Online
prefers 'website' (listed first) and accepts 'web site'.

Finally, the definitive source as far as I am concerned, Chambers uses
'website'.

David

Exactly! It's way too fuzzy to be a proper noun.

Re: [wdvltalk] "Web site" or "website,

2005-04-12 Thread Joseph Harris
Just to add a pennorth or two. Generally a capital letter for a noun which
refers to one specific thing is correct ('the king is in the bath' but 'a
king may be the head of any country). So my Website might be right, and
many sites might also be right.

Remember too the language is dynamic and reflects rather than rules. So
generally website would be right since it describes a concept; web site is
surely outdated and wrong since it implies the site of the web as a whole -
and that is the whole globe now.

Web page is a constituent of a site, and you may have web folders, web
documents and so on - so I see that as logically two words.

Strictly there is only one internet and grammatically capitalising seems
right. But we are no longer in the Victorian Age and 'the internet' is a
description of many things, an umbrella term - an idea, even. I am happy
to use lower case since I do not feel it is a description of an easily
definable object. In that way it is perhaps akin to the earth or humanity.

I have been struggling with Web site, website, or even web site. I like
website in one word, as I think it has become part of the language, but I
still use the two words.

How about web page, webpage? Is it appropriate to add web in front of a word
and merge it into one word?

I use website when referring to the domain and its contents.

I had this very conversation with the editor of my book. His first comment
was "we need to correct this from 'website' to 'web site' my response was
that I was using the term as one word to on purpose to reflect the current
state of the Internet."

FWIW, I use both Internet and internet depending on the sentence and how I'm
using the word.

my own view is that the world has progressed to the point that "Web" (when
referring to the Internet) is no longer viewed as a metaphor, but rather as
a simple noun, so I am now tending to prefer "website".

I also prefer "internet" over "Internet" for similar reasons, but think that
I'm in the minority on this one.

I'll be very interested to learn the opinions and usage of other list
members.
