[libreoffice-website] Download page: little addition pls

2011-06-03 Thread Cor Nouws

Hi,

IMO the current download page is OK, and the best that could be done in
the current time frame.
Offering both versions on page, prevents that people easily oversee that
there is a choice. Especially since the point-zero is for early
adaptors, that would be bad.
One remark though: IMO it ís necessary to also state in words that the
3.4.0 *is for early adaptors*. The exclamation mark in itself is not
clear enough, neither the suggestion that one "might want to read the
release notes".

If there are no objections, could someone pls add that few words, or
grant me rights for that part of the website?

Thanks,

Sorry - but as it is mostly admins, and not publishers, the admins
don't consider themselves responsible for everything.

So the right thing to do is either be a publisher yourself - or
nagging people when a page is not published in a timely fashion.

The conference date and location stuff looks a bit mixed:
  * Logo: Paris 2011 \n Conference \n 12th-15th October
  * Header: October 12-15 - Paris, France
  * Title: Paris, France \n October 12-15, 2011

Proposal 1:
  * Logo: (keep it)
  * Header: Paris, France \n 12th-15th October, 2011
  * Title: Paris, France \n 12th-15th October, 2011

Proposal 2: Do we _really_ need the same information two times in the
header (logo and header text)? To me, it would be better to just keep
the logo and remove the header text. Or, how about "Official LibreOffice
Conference".

Proposal 3: There is no way back to the official LibreOffice page - how
about using the first appearance of LibreOffice to link to the official
page? ("The first annual project's ...")

Could somebody pick that up - maybe you, Christian? Thanks in advance!

Cheers,
Christoph

PS: Great logo, great page! You guys rock!!!

It is not really new - when you were using the "Download Page" type,
you would already get the same list of files/the same filtering.
http://es.libreoffice.org/descarga/ already does this, so I assume you
were not referring to that part.

What was changed is the explanatory text at the top, and you're free
to replace it with something else to tell the users that 3.4.0 is not
for those who want a rock-solid release with no bugs.

See http://website.libreoffice.org/silverstripe/styles-you-can-use/

versions - when you want to manually insert the icon (as it is does on
the download page on the main site currently: the tick is
/themes/libo/images/tick.png, the exclamation one is
/themes/libo/images/warning.png , same for information.png and

At mail-archive.com

For reference: The algorithm on how to compute the has is here:
http://www.mail-archive.com/faq.html#listserver
i.e. take the msg-id and the list-addres, create a sha1-hash out of it
an url-encode it.

and when applying that to Friedrich's example, I get the same link
that was added to the message.

But also if the link was wrong, there still would be a problem on
their end, as searching Friedrich's mail by using the message-ID
doesn't work either. And with that functionality being missing, the
hash-URLs got no chance (as the msg-id is a crucial part to it -
msg-ids not indexed → direct links not working).

Might be that they disabled the indexing jobs for some other
maintenance or stuff, or it just died because of some bug - no idea...

Why does "DataPilot" come after "Impress/Draw"? I think it would be
natural if it comes as a part of "Calc feature and fixes". Yet,
"DataPilot" should be replaced by "PivotTable" mechanically in this page.

Good point on all of these. The DataPilot section should be moved to the
end of the Calc section and renamed PivotTable. Maybe we could keep it
as a section for this version only as the name has been changed and it
will be easier for users to see the name change.

The localization point about the DataPilot changing name should also be
moved to the PivotTable section.

Should I go ahead and do this?

[libreoffice-website] Download page too verbose?

2011-06-03 Thread Marc Paré
I am not to sure about the Download page. I find it too verbose. We need
to make it as simple as possible for users to download our product.

If I were a new user, I would find the page confusing as there are 2
"Final" choices to pick from and because of this, a new user would have
to read up on the "look at the release notes" pages to make a decision.
Most users would come to this page with the simple expectation of
downloading LibreOffice and not to read up on release notes. They are
looking for a solid product and normally not an experimental product.

I also think we should review the idea of offering by default the LibO
3.4 version. IMO, we should be offering the default rock solid 3.3.x
series rather than the still unproven 3.4 version. People downloading
the 3.4 version should really be the ones reading up on the release
notes and the possible list of bugs associated with that version -- they
would expect to read up on notes to this version.

People downloading the rock-solid 3.3.x should not have to feel like
they have to make the extra effort at downloading our star product.

We should also replace the "this" in "LibreOffice is distributed under
this licence." to "LibreOffice is distributed under the LGPL license."
We need to have people get used to seeing our license in type rather
than as a suggestion. I would also suggest this sentence being posted
under the download links. As a resulting effect, this will move the
whole series of download links up in the window. The link should also
not open another window/tab and rather stay in the same window -- I
think this is what is normal W3C behaviour.

If possible, would it be possible to see an example of another dropdown
menu window on the left hand side of the OS version or we could go to
something like this[1] on the Adobe site. I have made a mockup of my
suggestion[2] with all of the other points incorporated in the image.

So IMO we need to:

* change the default download from 3.4 to 3.3.x
* change the "LibreOffice is distributed under this license." to LGPL
* move this licensing sentence below the download links
* add another dropdown window on the left-hand side
* shorten the verbose links for the release notes (as in mockup)

Just my opinion.

Is translation of this page

or at least re-use of some content easy?

Thanks,

Hi Cor

Not sure what you mean?

choose between downloads (what I will do at first is to show both 3.4
and 3.3 versions in the filtered selection, with 3.4 coming first)

If this is technically possible and easy, I love this idea.

yes, it wasn't hard to do.

People pointed out that the 3.4.0 version is to be considered an
early-adopters version, and still has quite some nasty known bugs.
(see
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/3.4#Most_annoying_bugs_in_3.4.0
)

so I added visual indicators (exclamation icon and checkmarck/tick
icon) to the corresponding versions, so that in the text above it can
be pointed out that the 3.4.0 version is not for the business user
that requires 100% stability, etc. (what also the adapt-o-meter idea
shows)

So tell me what you think about this:
http://pumbaa.documentfoundation.org:7780/download/

you can use the box/icon styles shown here:
http://website.libreoffice.org/silverstripe/styles-you-can-use/
to add the corresponding warning/explanations

Although the release has been published, I still want to say this is great.

 Takashi Nakamoto

Hello,

I missed the plot on this a bit - is this a problem at Mail-Archive or
in our implementation? Anyone already working on it?

Thanks,

well, we mention this below *EVERY* e-mail and on *EVERY* page where we
give information on how to subscribe to these lists. If you did not read
it, this is clearly not our fault.

Apart from that, the screenshot you mailed showed an e-mail by me, I
cannot see where your address has been made public by it.

Now, I want LibreOffice delete my mail address from all the archive pages.

I can ask our archives to delete it. For that, you need to send me all
the links from

http://blog.gmane.org/gmane.comp.documentfoundation.libreoffice.website
http://www.mail-archive.com/website@libreoffice.org/
http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/www/website/

where your mail address has been listed. However, this will *NOT* delete
your mail from all archives and Google indices, as we cannot influence
them. In nutshell: It probably causes you and me more work than it helps
in the end, so it is wasted time.

However, if you insist, send me all the links, and I will see what I can do.

Hello,

Would it be possible to parameter the mailing list correctly, our addresses
are public on them, please see joigned screenshot.

And it's a well advertised "feature":
