the bug is in the documentation. the keyword is 'serial', not
'station_serial'

readme has been fixed at commit 77c1e6e

[weewx-user] Re: C84612 with GW1000U gateway

2017-01-09 Thread Tony McConnell
Wow, I feel like an idiot. I don't know why I thought running it directly
would spit out that debug info. So in the log it threw an error:
Jan 9 19:30:12 ubuntu-server weewx[5934]: import of driver failed:
__init__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'station_serial' ()
Jan 9 19:30:12 ubuntu-server weewx[5934]: engine: Unable to load driver:
__init__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'station_serial'

Somewhat confused because the readme for the intercepter driver has this:

station_serial = 7FFF # 16-character registration key

That how I have it in my config but with my serial number.

Thanks for your super quick reply by the way!

[weewx-user] C84612 with GW1000U gateway

2017-01-09 Thread Tony McConnell
I am having trouble configuring weewx to grab data from my GW1000U gateway
and C84612 weather station. I have installed weewx to an Ubuntu Server
(fresh install of ubuntu I might add), installed the driver from this
, configured weewx using
the same settings as mentioned in "Example: GW1000U" and set the proxy on
the GAS to the same address as my server. Not really sure where to go from
there because when I run

sudo weewxd weewx.conf

nothing is displayed on the console. Even tried with -r argument with no
luck.

Not sure what I'm missing, any advice?

Thanks

Well at a minimum, you'll need to have a developer key at amazon associated
with the profile your Echo uses, so you can set all that stuff up now and
fiddle with it to get your feet wet. Teach it how to answer with something
to a question you cook up. Teach it how to do a RSS Flash read ala the
link I posted. It takes a little time to understand the moving parts.

At the moment all I can do is pull the Zambretti forecast from the forecast
database (provided the forecast extension is installed), unfortunately the
WU and NWS forecast text is not saved in the forecast database. I have had
the WU forecast text being pulled in through weewx-WD but that is something
for the next version of weewx-WD and that is going to be weeks away (at
least).

I might have a chat with Matthew and see what he may be prepared to do,

[weewx-user] How to display WeeWx data in 'real' time

2017-01-09 Thread Den S
I am running WeeWx on a Pi 3 B with apache 2 serving the webpage locally on
the Pi. We have a nice big display showing the weather data.

Is there a way to update the data in as close to real time as i can get?

I am not stuck on displaying the data as a web page.

I'd love to see the wind speed / direction as it happens.

Thanks for reading this, hope there is a way to do this

Re: [weewx-user] SQLite vs. MySQL

2017-01-09 Thread Thomas Keffer
sqlite is also easier to backup. All its state is held in a single,
regular, file.

I've been using it for 10 years and 200 MB of data with no issues.

The big advantage of MySQL over sqlite is with multi-user, high-transaction
throughput. That's not applicable in the weewx context.

I'd lean toward yes. It is much simpler to learn and it runs fast on much
less capable hardware. It's also much easier to extend and debug (at

2017-01-09 Thread Andrew Milner
1) No - multiple stations will still require multiple databases. Weewx and
its extensions work with both databases as far as I am aware
2) No - KISS principles would indicate SQLite as being preferable to MySQL,
even though I use MySQL
3) Yes - weewx caters for both SQLite and MySQL with no issues - the config
is in a single file (weewx.conf) and can be changed at will.

[weewx-user] SQLite vs. MySQL

2017-01-09 Thread tempus
Hi,

I recently installed weewx using apt-get under Ubuntu 16.04.1 Server. I
then enabled the Simulator for testing while awaiting delivery of a USB
logger for a Vantage Pro2 console. All that went well. Weewx is working
as expected with the default SQLite database.

The hardware has been used only to host a personal cloud server that is
online 24/7. It has a multi-core processor, plenty of memory, and plenty
of storage space. MariaDB (MySQL-compatible) is installed. I am very
familiar with MySQL, but have never used SQLite. I am wondering whether to
switch to MariaDB before inputting real data.

1) Other than network accessibility, does MySQL provide any significant
advantage in weewx applications (maybe with multiple weather stations,
various extensions, or whatever)?

2) Other than simpler installation and administration, does SQLite provide
any significant advantage in weewx applications (speed, maybe)?

3) I assume apt-get upgrade will work in the future without custom changes
if weewx is reconfigured to use MySQL. Is that true?

ok, I had greater than zero success using the Flash Briefing skill
walkthrough at
https://developer.amazon.com/public/solutions/alexa/alexa-skills-kit/docs/steps-to-create-a-flash-briefing-skill#add-one-or-more-flash-briefing-feeds

and got Alexa to read my rss.xml file that the standard skin creates.

   - followed the instructions in the link above to create the skill,
pointing at the Internet-accessible URL for the rss.xml file my weewx
   system generates
   - had to create a 512x512 image to upload for it to proceed (ugh). I
took the weewx icon from weewx.com and scaled it up using an online image
   modifier I found via google
   - enabled the new skill in my developer portal at amazon
   - got in 'settings' in the alexa app on the phone and disabled all my
news flash feeds, enabled just my new weewx one
   - got in skills in the alexa app on the phone and ensured my new weewx
   one was enabled
   - tried "alexa flash briefing" and it read my rss.xml file contents to
me including currents, min/max data, etcthere's a long list in rss.xml
   by default

So it's doable with some tweaking in about 10 minutes of learning using the
link above.

Now what I'm sure everybody (including me) wants is more of a custom
interaction skill, not a flash briefing skill, along the lines of "alexa
wee weather please" and have it give you the home weather. I have to think
that's doable. The one thing I can't figure out is how we could have a
generic skill that did that kind of model, where everybody would put in
their own URL to read, because I 'think' we would all need a custom skill
of our own with our unique url to read somehow.

But it is pretty cool getting alexa to read my weewx current conditions to
me :-)
