Per Tim Starling on mailing list[1]: I've been working on a rewrite of the
script loader and a reorganisation of the JS2 stuff. I'd like to delay 1.16
until that's in and tested. Brion has said that he doesn't want Michael Dale's
branch merge reverted, so as far as I can see, a schedule delay is the only
other way to maintain an appropriate quality.

Created bug 20776 and bug 20777 for this.

[Bug 20774] Enabling LocalisationUpdate vastly increases CPU activity

Note that l10nupdate's installation triggers invalidation of the l10ncache,
causing it to be rebuilt from scratch. Try making a whitespace change to
MessagesEn.php and syncing that, then see what the resulting CPU spike looks
like. Also, please investigate how well-synchronized the Apaches' clocks are.

(In reply to comment #0)
Not deployable in this state; CPU usage needs to be tracked down and cleared
up. Is it breaking the cache infrastructure, or is pulling extra stuff from
DBs
when we've got main localization in CDB files inefficient?

I'll look into the CPU usage; debug logs from earlier local test runs show that
l10nupdate is not pulling localizations from the DB once all its stuff is in
the l10ncache, however. Offhand, I think the dependency check may hit the DB,
but that shouldn't double CPU usage AFAICT.

[Bug 164] Support collation by a certain locale (sorting order of characters)

--- Comment #108 from Anon Sricharoenchai anon@gmail.com 2009-09-23

(In reply to comment #107)
The key generation module may be implemented as an extension, so that the core
mediawiki installtion will not be architecture dependent nor require
additional
dependency.

This extension will just do the task of key generation, mediawiki core will
then put the generated key in the field categorylinks.cl_sortkey.
It also need the script maintenance/updateSortkey.php to be invoked when this
extension is added or removed.

How do you think about this idea?

Hmm, we cannot store this generated key in categorylinks.cl_sortkey, since the
firstChar() of the original key is needed in rendering the Category pages.

Seems that, we really need to add additional field in table categorylinks.

Note that, an extension that generates the sort key should also provide the
firstChar() interface.

In some languages, when the sorting is implemented, the behavior of firstChar()
must be properly handled.

See: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bugzilla/collation_by_locale#firstChar.28.29

--- Comment #110 from Le Chat cat...@vp.pl 2009-09-23 10:38:58 UTC ---
I find it rather disheartening that this very simple thing has not been solved
after so many years (how is it conceivable that software designed for
encyclopedias and dicionaries can't even get alphabetical order right?)

Here's how I would do it (this is all just abstract thought): have a new column
in the table of pages, to contain a unique key: X__Y, where Y is the page
title, and X is some language-dependent function of Y which represents Y
alphabetically. For example, for English, the function would convert all
letters to the same case, convert modified letters (diacritics and so on) to
their basic unmodified form, strip out most punctuation, probably strip out
spaces too (though there are alternative approaches to spaces).

Then alphabetical indexing of the table (sorry, don't know exactly what I mean,
but whatever is used to generate the contents lists at
Special:PrefixIndex/AllPages) would be based on this new column, not on the
page title itself, and the value in this column would also be passed as the
category sort key. This way you solve two problems at once - the contents lists
and the categories (the preceding suggestions seem to relate to the categories
only). AND it can probably be leveraged to improve search/Go (to avoid the need
to create redirects to titles with diacritics and so on).

Don't know if this is any use, but anyway, I hope someone can get these very
basic issues solved soon.

[Bug 20780] New: Upload of MIDI file erroneously rejected

2009-09-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20780

 Summary: Upload of MIDI file erroneously rejected
 Product: MediaWiki
 Version: unspecified
 Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
 Severity: major
 Priority: Normal
Component: Uploading
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: m...@mbednarek.com

Uploading the MIDI file at http://mbednarek.com/temp/maidensprayer.mid results
in the error message: This file contains HTML or script code that may be
erroneously interpreted by a web browser.

According to user Splarka at
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_(technical)oldid=315675310#Upload_MIDI
this happend because this particular file happened to have the string A in
its first 1024 characters. That string is part of a valid MIDI instruction.

Binary files, like MIDI files, should not be subject to screening for text
strings; fragments like A in this case can obviously occur outside the
context of HTML or script code.

User Splarka mentioned that UploadBase.php might be at the core of the
problem.

--- Comment #111 from Anon Sricharoenchai anon@gmail.com 2009-09-23
12:56:55 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #110)

Here's how I would do it (this is all just abstract thought): have a new
column
in the table of pages, to contain a unique key: X__Y, where Y is the page
title, and X is some language-dependent function of Y which represents Y
alphabetically. For example, for English, the function would convert all
letters to the same case, convert modified letters (diacritics and so on) to
their basic unmodified form, strip out most punctuation, probably strip out
spaces too (though there are alternative approaches to spaces).

Then alphabetical indexing of the table (sorry, don't know exactly what I
mean,
but whatever is used to generate the contents lists at
Special:PrefixIndex/AllPages) would be based on this new column, not on the
page title itself, and the value in this column would also be passed as the
category sort key. This way you solve two problems at once - the contents
lists
and the categories (the preceding suggestions seem to relate to the categories

Storing the sort key in table of pages does not solve the categories case,
since the category sort key for each page can be customized to be different
from the page's title, like this,

only). AND it can probably be leveraged to improve search/Go (to avoid the
need
to create redirects to titles with diacritics and so on).

By now, the variables $mWidths and $mHeights in class ImageGallery are set to
120px. This is rather small for modern monitors.
It would be nice, if there where a user option to set the default size of
galleries. Either as a distinct option, or depending on the user's thumbsize.

Note for folks trying to reproduce this at home: I've discovered that this bug
only happens because WMF disabled LU without touching LocalSettings.php ; on
normal installs, LocalSettings.php will be changed in the process of disabling

hello,

As bot owner I frequently need to check pages not modified since a certain
date, like Translation pages forgotten. Unfortunnatly there are frequently bot
edits on this pages, and these edits are not revelant to determine if a page is
lost.

My request would be to add the possibility in the API to get the history
without bots contributions (returning no history for a page with only bot
tagged edits)

This could be a key of prop=revisions (rv), something like rvexcludebots

I hope it's not too complex

Regards

Hercule

I don't think, there has to be an distinct option for the thumbnail size in
galleries.
Only two lines in ImageGallery::__construct need to be added to do the trick:
global $wgUser, $wgThumbUpright;
$mWidths = $mHeights = 2 / 3 *
$wgThumbLimits[$wgUser-getOption('thumbsize')];

((Sorry for Bug 20782, grep'd for gallery, forgetting galleries))

Should be fixed with r56816. Note that all attempts to reproduce this bug
locally failed, because it cannot occur in theory: there's a GlobalDependency
checking $wgExtensionMessagesFiles before any extension-added dependencies, and
the former should fire since disabling an extension obviously changes the value
of $wgExtensionMessagesFiles, which means the ghost LU object should never be
reached.

In short, a theoretically unreachable code path was somehow reached anyway and
exploded; this should now be fixed.

Like the comments in IEContentAnalyzer.php say, the objective is to emulate
IE's broken MIME detection code, not to be correct. You've just pointed out an
obvious flaw in IE's algorithm, which IEContentAnalyzer duplicates because its
purpose is to predict how IE will react.

Yes, obviously customized keys would still override the stored ones - is there
any problem associated with this? (I suppose a similar language-dependent
function would have to be applied to customized sort keys as well, to ensure
their comparability with the ones from the table, and there might be changeover
issues.)

[Bug 164] Support collation by a certain locale (sorting order of characters)

2009-09-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164

--- Comment #113 from Mormegil morme...@centrum.cz 2009-09-23 16:44:19 UTC
---
(In reply to comment #112)
Yes, obviously customized keys would still override the stored ones - is there
any problem associated with this?

But the customized keys are in the page ↔ category relationship, not on the
page itself, i.e. one page can have more than one sort key, e.g.:

So that your point that you would create a new column “in the table of
pages”, is not a sufficient solution. But (no offense!) I don’t think your
idea adds anything new to this discussion. All this has been debated
thoroughly, only minor details seem to remain, plus that simple matter of
programming…

As far as colours go - they should be changed. The red-on-green scheme for

new text is virtually unreadable to those with the most common form of
colourblindness.

I think some file bloat in exceptional cases is OK. Most color profiles are
only 3-5 kb. Considering how often people complain about their images looking
different (especially skin tones) after uploading them to Commons, I think the
trade-off will be worth it. There was just a new complaint about it yesterday,
in fact:

The live servers have an obsolete copy of LanguageDe.php class file:

/apache/common/wmf-deployment/languages/classes/LanguageDe.php

This little guy explicitly excepted 4-digit numbers from getting the thousands
separator:

?php
/** German
*
* @ingroup Language
*/
class LanguageDe extends Language {

/*
* German numeric format is 12 345,67 but 1234,56
* Copied from LanguageUk.php
*/

function commafy($_) {
if (!preg_match('/^\d{1,4}$/',$_)) {
return
strrev((string)preg_replace('/(\d{3})(?=\d)(?!\d*\.)/','$1,',strrev($_)));
} else {
return $_;
}
}
}

It's since been removed from the main code, but it's still on most of our
servers -- looks like our sync scripts aren't actually removing files that
shouldn't be there anymore.

Rob and/or Fred can you take a peek at our scap, sync-common-all, etc sync
scripts and see if we need to tweak the rsync options so these old files get
cleared out?

Reclosing as WFM. Looking at that history page and the oldid's I can see no
problem at all. Of course none of this text is displayed on the _current_ page
rev, so I can't confirm if it was indeed not displaying right (although comment
#1 says it was). Most likely this was either a temporary problem or long since
fixed.

[Bug 20788] New: FCKeditor changes image size

2009-09-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20788

 Summary: FCKeditor changes image size
 Product: MediaWiki extensions
 Version: any
 Platform: PC
OS/Version: Windows Server 2003
Status: NEW
 Severity: critical
 Priority: Normal
Component: FCKeditor
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: tcarf...@deloitte.com

Versions
Mediawiki:1.15.1
FCKeditor: 2.6.4

When you add an image to a page and then you edit the size of the page it
reverts the image back to the original imported size if you edit the page using
the FCKeditor. If you have the rich text editor off you can resize an image and
save it and it will keep the change. But if you turn the rich text editor on
and try to edit the page it will resize the image back to the original size.

Please help me with this issue. I can recreate this issue in our staging and
production environment.

I also see this issue in my personal wiki with the same version but it is
running on Linux.

[Bug 20774] Enabling LocalisationUpdate vastly increases CPU activity

2009-09-23 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20774

--- Comment #3 from Roan Kattouw roan.katt...@gmail.com 2009-09-23 20:13:28

Hopefully fixed with the rewrite in r56831.

Basically, the two major culprits were:
1. the code checking the timestamp of the last update.php run (to determine
whether to rebuild the l10ncache) pulled stale data from the slaves, and wasn't
smart enough to use queriedTimestamp expectedTimestamp instead of !=
2. the initial update.php run inserted about a million rows in each of the 5
per-cluster localisation tables, using a separate REPLACE statement for each
row; this presumably slowed down replication and worsened #1.

LU now uses a file-based storage system.

[Bug 14801] Global deleted image review for Commons admins

--- Comment #29 from Brion Vibber br...@wikimedia.org 2009-09-23 20:14:37

Couple quick notes...

The patch doesn't apply cleanly against development trunk; lots of stuff has
changed internally since 1.15, so this'll be a lot easier to get merged if it's
rebuilt against trunk instead of a release branch.

I also see some code duplication, copying portions of the UI output between the
can-restore and can't-restore cases. This is easy to do the first time around,
but makes code maintenance harder -- the copies can get out of sync easily, and
generally just clutter the codebase. I would recommend merging the two cases
together; just don't output the form fields when they won't be needed.

Current preferences architecture in 1.16 should make this fairly
straightforward; a custom or extension-driven skin should be able to inject
preferences and make use of them at will.

Of course we've had skin-related preferences for ages such as the sidebar
left/right selection for the classic skins, that were just present in the pref
defaults.
