Just as a refresher, source numbering doesn't currently work properly because I don't have a hook to the right point in the parser. After several tests of this with my own farm, I have reached the conclusion that whatever you try, the maintenance will always default to your default wiki for some reason. And it is hardly obvious how it even gets to that, even when forcing it through several localsettings modified specifically to only include *one* $wgDBname. I realise that it was originally written for Wikipedia, but apparently, I guess, Wikipedia got all the cheat codes and holds all the cards, because it surely works in their end and not here. The actual listed issue: --wiki does not work does indeed not work, regardless of your setup. It's only checked when it 'wikimedia-mode,' when in fact it should be checked regardless so third parties can use it too. The issue was that the --wiki option originally only existed for WMF wikis and was never advertised as a possible option. However, the gadget doesn't work yet; it fails to look ahead as you're typing a category name, and clicking the OK button fails to save the category entered. First, MWSuggest needs to be enabled for the autocompletion feature. I'm not sure why this is currently disabled on private wikis, enabling it would seem to be safe. Second, HotCat uses JSON callbacks even to query data on the same domain. This is completely unnecessary (no cross-domain restrictions apply, so callbacks aren't needed and AJAX can be used instead) but does break on private wikis because callbacks always operate as anonymous users.
