You're right, it's my fault, of course, editor.

My translator incorrectly translated the nicknames of users. That's right -

[Bug 25442] New: Message MediaWiki:coll-load_local_book has several problems.

2010-10-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25442

   Summary: Message MediaWiki:coll-load_local_book has several
problems.
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
   URL: http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?title=Supportoffset=
20101005110824#MediaWiki:coll-load_local_book_7879
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Normal
 Component: Collection
AssignedTo: supp...@pediapress.com
ReportedBy: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net
CC: bugzilla.wikime...@publi.purodha.net

Message coll-load_local_book should be using {int:}} on Ok and Cancel
so as to get the correctly localized versions of either string. If that is not
possible, it should document (in the /qqq pseudo-language space) where these
are localized so as to allow translators to use consistent wording. If these
strings cannot be localized, also this needs to be documented so as to tell
translators not to translate them.

The message needs to use PLURAL on %NUMPAGES%. See
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/I18n#Be_aware_of_PLURAL_use_on_all_numbers
why the idea that you rarely have colloctions of one page only does not
make PLURAL avoidable.

It would be better to use normal MediaWiki style substitutions ($1, $2, ...)
instead of special ones like %TITLE% and %NUMPAGES%.

Trying to make all these requierd changes or additons, I found the source
code using this message somewhat unreadable since it embeds the message
into something looking like JavaScript to me without giving a clue where
the parameters come from. I am not a user of the extension Collection,
I am only a translator. but this one appears to me a quite central message.
If the extension is meant for broad public use - why else would its messages
be translated? - then I suggest that to rethink this. While it is permissible
to have Javascript on secure sites, you cannot use it safely elsewhere, and
you must permit users not to accept JavaScript of which they have no way to
know that a true copy of what a host has sent arrived on their clients,
That is, you can use JavaScript for non-essentials that are nice to have,
but you cannot rely on JavaScript to function on the clients side, leave
alone that there are browsers and environments that just cannot run them.
Putting required functionality into JavaScript thus is just insane; and
by the way, is always unnecessary.

This is likely related to bug 25330

I did not get a preview on translatewiki.net's LQT pages since approximately
2010-09-20 when replying to an existing post. I usually try preview before
saving. I posted replies almost daily.

re-closing as fixed. Wikimedia sites are running a version of mediawiki before
the version where this is fixed.

Have you tried purging your cache? I've seen this error in the past, but I'm
not getting any errors on your userpage or the other pages mentioned here.

The error depends on what the contents of special:newPages is, so sometimes it
will be present, sometimes it won't depending on if any of the recent page
creations have been tagged.

There's no need to send the content to the server, a clientwise js check would
be much quicker.
We could for example reuse the jquery ui to display a simple alert, and if the
user dismisses it, but clicks save again, then save it.

I'll write up a short js function soon.

If a user clicks in the reply button of a comment, it is shown the image
ajax-loader.gif. This is ok.

The problem is: sometimes nothing happens (probably because of slow internet
connection) and then a user clicks the button again. In this case, the image is
added two times. If the user clicks again and again, it will be added new
copies of that image for each click. This should be avoided.

Notice that if more than one image was shown, when the script finishes loading
the box for new comments, only the first image will be removed, causing the
impression that there still have something to wait...

On wikinews we are getting some people trying to create pages of the form
 [[n:Al shabaab ondiscussionpage:Comments:Somali opposition group al-Shabaab to
 block WFP food aid]].

As far as i can tell, people go to the opinion page, [[n:Comments:Somali
opposition group al-Shabaab to block WFP food aid]], see the search discussion
box right beside the create a new discussion link. They assume that text box
is to start a new discussion, instead of search. They enter a title, hit
 enter,
go to search page which has the:

Create the page Foo ondiscussionpage:Comments:Somali opposition group
al-Shabaab to block WFP food aid on this wiki!

 link.

They click that, thinking thats how you enter a comment. This causes problems
as thats not where we want people to create their comments.

The same happened at pt.wikibooks:

[Bug 14977] $wgServer lacks brackets in IPv6 URLs

Your opinions aside there is no need for MediaWiki to support the use of
ethernet addresses within $wgServerName. Unless you have something constructive
to add concerning this bug you need not respond.

To review. MediaWiki is designed for use on a web server using PHP and a SQL
database. (MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.) This bug concerns the lack of brackets
around IPv6 addresses. Because MediaWiki is designed to be dependent (by
default) on IP, and IPv4 address depletion is expected sometime in 2011 this
bug should be resolved soon.

Could've said it a bit nicer, but...I agree wholeheartedly, there is no reason
for us to start supporting every possible protocol under the sun. Without a
solid use case, it simply is not worth the effort.

Yes, it should be fixed (sooner rather than later). Tagging this with
+bugsmash. Shouldn't be *too* hard to crank out a solution over the course of
that weekend.

[Bug 25299] Make pending revision status clearer when viewing page

2010-10-07 Thread bugzilla-daemon

Right now, it takes a sharp eye to notice when one is looking at a
page that hasn't been accepted yet. The main visual indicators are an
icon on the right, and the fact that the Pending Changes rather than
the Read tab is highlighted. What we plan to do here will be
modeled on what you see when you're looking at an old revision (i.e.
there will be a horizontal notice at the top indicating This is an
pending revision of this page, as edited by 127.0.0.1 (talk |
contribs) at 13:37, 7 October 2010. It may differ significantly from
the accepted revision.)

An old decision that we plan to revisit: currently, the revision you
are shown depends on whether you're logged in or not you are logged
in. If you're not logged in, then by default, you see the accepted
revision. If you are logged in, you see the pending revision by
default. Brandon feels pretty strongly that we need to be much more
consistant here, always showing the accepted revision regardless of
logged-in status. There's some research we need to do to make sure we
understand the current rationale, but barring any unexpected insight,
we'll probably be making the switch.

[Bug 25295] Improve reviewer experience when multiple simultaneous users review Pending Changes

Almost everyone who I've talked to about this problem feels like maybe
the timeout needs to be tuned, but since almost no one knows what the
timeout is, that may be the problem itself.

One possible workflow (inspired by our conversation, but not vetted by
Brandon or Alolita) is this:
* On the list of pages to review, keep the under review notice
pretty much exactly as is
* On the review page, in the Review this revision box, put one of
two notices:
** This page is being reviewed by User:Xyz, who started 20:09, 7 October
2010
** You are being advertised as currently reviewing of this page
(started 20:09, 7 October 2010). [Stop reviewing]

This would add some transparency to the review process, which will
help us tune the timeout and generally make this work more as people
would expect it to.

Some implementation questions that we didn't know the answers to:
1) Do we know *who* is doing the reviewing of a page? (i.e. is this
already stored somewhere we can get at it easily) If so, the notice
should be pretty straightforward.
2) If so, when *anyone* looks at a set of pending changes, does it
mark it as under review? We're assuming not, but one thing that's
frustrating is that any time a reviewer looks at a diff, that
automatically puts the page under review.

[Bug 25296] History style cleanup - investigate possible fixes and detail the fixes

This one represents a bit of a paradox for us. On one hand, we know
that there is a LOT of work to do here, and thus, we know that we're
not going to make significant usability progress on this one by
November. On the other hand, there are a number of little things that
are annoyingly wrong, and with just a small amount of care and
attention, we could make incremental progress on.

We don't want to allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good, so
we're going to try to restrain ourselves, and come up with a few easy
things that we can do to make this a little bit better. Brandon is
planning to spend some time looking at the history page and come up
with some formatting and wording fixes that will make the Pending
Changes history pages a little better.

[Bug 25301] Firm up the list of minor UI improvements for the November 2010 Pending Changes release

This is actually a task for sorting through a small list of seemingly
easy things. Many of the items here are probably within the grasp of
an interested admin to just fix rather than waiting on us for.

Brandon is planning to sweep through on all of these and come up with
a few specific recommendations. If you have some thoughts, we'd
appreciate them here.

4a. Better links to documentation on PC related specialpages - from
the comments: The review page could have links to Help documentation,
reviewer guidelines, and PC policy pages.

4b. Incorporate the PC protection rationale (protection log message)
into the review screen as instruction to the reviewer - from the
comments: Make the protection rationale visible (currently it's
click-to-expand). That way Reviewers could see up front if PC was in
use for Vandalism, BLP, edit warring, etc. Helps alert them to the
'type' of problematic edits, particularly more subtle kinds.

4c. Add short reviewer instructions to the review page - from the comments:
Just a summary of how to review. Depends on policy discussions about
reverting vandalism or also poor edits. Currently could just include
the reviewer guidelines writ small.

4d. Quick link to Pending Changes specialpages - from the comments:
Easy access from the sidebar, or other common locations (not sure
where).

We're probably not going to address this one in the November 2010

person has reviewer rights. The problem with this one is that we
don't yet have clear guidelines for what belongs in the toolbox on the

level of importance that we should put them in the toolbox.
