Removing duplicate to bug 6100, adding dependancy to bug 6100.

Reopening. I think there's some information around which could be linked to.

(In reply to comment #17)
Can we direct people to a twitter feed specifically for /significant/ notices
related to Wikimedia status? Easy for any number of people to maintain, brief
notes sufficient, up to the minute, and accessible via apps or via web page
 link in the browser.

That's bug 20079.
Currently, there's no such information on identi.ca/Twitter. The server admin
log (@wikimediatech) mostly lacks such information; @DivaDanese gives some
information but it's not something you can link, additionally @wikipedia
randomly contains updates. But you only need to aggregate.
The easiest thing to do right now seems to use http://identi.ca/group/wikimedia
: it's a quite clean feed; @wikipedia can learn to use the !Wikimedia tag;
sysadmins can easily post updates from IRC using the same tag because Andrew
recently added @wikimediatech to the group; if they don't do so, everybody can
post updates and if they abuse the group they can be blocked.

  * IRC: channel details
 http://web link (web based)

#wikimedia-status doesn't work; #wikimedia-tech seems a better channel, because
it covers all projects and (AFAIK) more languages. But I agree that it's better
to remove it; otherwise it should point to the web interface, e.g.
http://webchat.freenode.net/?nick=404-channels=wikimedia-techprompt=1

  * Twitter: wikimedia-network-status
 http://search.twitter.com/search?q=wikimedia-network-status
 (web based)

Please link only to identi.ca.

  * Our external status pages: list

http://status.wikimedia.org/ is currently quite useless, but it can contain
notices and so on (also from RSS), so it seems a good idea.

Almost-current versions of articles can be read from the following cache
 websites: list

It's not a good idea to advertise other (for-profit) websites, and the error
would become too big.

IRC is useful for many people. So are identi.ca and twitter, client (or app)
and browser based. We should provide a few routes, not just one.

That's bug 16043. This bug asks for

some easy, quick to update and accessible method of
telling users what is going on.

http://status.wikimedia.org/ seems the way, but sysadmins need to decide how to
update it with notices.

I've tested one simple implementation briefly. In this implementation if you
start typing Par.. it would try to match it with any word in the title (not
only the starting one). The problem with this is that there are many such
articles (many more than starting with Par..) and they in fact in most cases
obscure the ones you really want. Or to be more technical, this would give you
larger recall, but for a cost of much smaller precision.

One solution might be that if the search suggest doesn't find the word you
typed as the first one (e.g. no articles starting with Participatory) then it
would start to look at other words as well.

I get it, but is the consistent nomenclature + extra baggage (aliases) really
worse than the inconsistent, poorly-named, confusing nomenclature we currently
have? We're balancing two evils here, and I personally think the first one is
the less bad, especially since it allows a gradual phasing out of the old
system, and eventually dropping the extra baggage altogether.

Besides, wgArticleId is too Wikipedia-main-namespace centric ( a dictionary
entry, a book page, and so on, aren't articles).

[Bug 29162] Automatically add encoded URL lines for entries in MediaWiki:robots.txt

2011-05-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29162

--- Comment #2 from FT2 ft2.w...@gmail.com 2011-05-27 13:51:10 UTC ---
Very useful, however we need to check what happens if some of the alternate
URLs to the canonical page are excluded by robots.txt and some aren't.

Does it apply the robots.txt rule that it has for the canonical page, to all
alternatives? Or does it get confused?

Example:

/Wikipedia%3AArbitration%2FExample is stated to have
/Wikipedia:Arbitration/Example as its canonical link. However one of these is
NOINDEXed via robots.txt or in its header and one isn't. Knowing the canonicity
helps to identify these as duplicates and the same page. But does it
guarantee both of these will be treated as NOINDEXED if one of them is and the
other isn't? Or do we still have to cover all variants of the URL in
robots.txt?

The detection is done in ext.articleFeedback.startup. You can do lots of things
with JavaScript hacking, this is not a situation where it really matters to
prevent people from enabling ArticleFeedback on pages themselves, so there's no
need to lock it down harder.

If you were to use

javascript:mw.loader.load( 'ext.articleFeedback.startup' );void 0;

It would load a lightweight detection and bootstrapping script, that may or may
not proceed to load ext.articleFeedback.

I didn't find any discussion, but this link shows that there's local consensus
for an Author (Автор) namespace to be used, although currently pages are in
main namespace.
It seems uncontroversial to actually add it to $wgExtraNamespaces; talk
namespace should be Разговор_за_автор.

I spent some time testing this and taking screen shots. I found a bunch of 1
week blocks that were about to expire and started watching them.

My guess, from this testing is that, while the times on the site all given in
UTC+0, whatever handles expiration sees this as local time and runs the
expiration in a different timezone.

I'm attaching two screenshots showing the problem. UTC time is show via a
gadget in the upper right part of the webpage. EDT is shown by my local clock.
I'll try a couple more spot checks to confirm this today, but it looks like
the expiration is 6-7 hours off.

[Bug 29144] Move action=dublincore and action=creativecommons to extensions

(In reply to comment #9)
Not really we remove stuff to reduce bloat and to make stuff simpler. or
are we just going to make that pointless and stick everything back in?

My goal is not to reduce bloat, by which I assume you mean the size of the
tarball (since modules are maintained outside of phase3). While elegance and
simplicity are good things to have in the code, those goals are orthogonal to
bloat.

My goal (prejudiced by my daily grind through Bugzilla) is to reduce support
costs. If you look, you'll find several (hundred?) bugs in Bugzilla of people
asking why MediaWiki doesn't support ref tags out of the box. Each time, the
response is the same: install the Cite extension.

If we bundled the Cite extension in the tarball and the new installer provided
a clear explanation of what you get if you enable it, that would reduce the
number of support requests in Bugzilla,

That is why I aiming to have modules that are split out from core included in
the tarball.

I noticed something weird when trying to rate the United States article which I
had previously rated (my ratings were correctly displayed as expired). Right
after adding my rating for the first option (Trustworthy) all other 3 options
got immediately populated with what I think were my previous, expired ratings.

I am unable to reproduce this as I cannot manually expire my ratings and I
wonder if this is due to some browser-specific auto-completion functionality.

I was using Safari 5.0.5 / Mac OS 10.6.7

It looks to me like inputbox needs to be more cleanly validating/interpreting
its input.

Title::newFromText() will happily decode the '#39;' from the escaped input
string into a single apostrophe, which can then be output cleanly into the form
parameters where we need the more canonical version.

[Bug 29162] Automatically add encoded URL lines for entries in MediaWiki:robots.txt

--- Comment #3 from FT2 ft2.w...@gmail.com 2011-05-27 17:43:31 UTC ---
To clarify, URL variants where robots.txt or header tags prohibit spidering
will probably be excluded from spidering in the first place. So Google will be
left to collate those URL variants it came across where robots, txt or header
tags _didn't_ prevent spidering -- and a canonical setting which states these
are all the same page.

Ie this setting could help avoid duplicates but my guess is it probably _won't_
prevent URLs not stopped by robots.txt or header tags from being listed in
results.

Please define aliases with the [pseudo-]canonical names of Author, Page, Index
namespaces (and their talk namespaces) on all Wikisources, where they're not in
$wgNamespaceAliases.
I've put them all on [[oldwikisource:User:Nemo_bis/wgNamespaceAliases]]
(information gathered and cross-checked with several sources, see history).
This is greatly needed because such namespaces have different numbers (and
names, obviously) on Wikisources, and it's very difficult to tell what
namespace contains what, without digging a lot.

Actually, there seems to have been at least one genuine bug in the new parser
cache code, which (I think) I fixed in r88988. This bug caused users with and
without section editing enabled to share the same parser cache keys, leading to
section edit links being mysteriously shown or not shown to user who shouldn't
or should see them.

In order to actually submit it to google, we need someone with access to
Google Webmaster Tools for the en.wikinews domain.

Bawolff: have you verified with User:Brian_McNeil that this step has not
 already been accomplished?

Yes, I discussed with him on irc. It has not been done yet. He mentioned that
he had some contact info for google on an old computer that would be difficult
to find. I don't think he has access to Google Webmaster tools.

btw, just to clarify the relevant url we'd want to submit to google would be:

Patch to remove hostname from /wiki/HTTP_404 URL

OK, here's a simple patch against the output of the current 404 page which
should make the /wiki/HTTP_404 link relative, just like the Main Page link
is.

(It does occur to me that this probably won't work on the secure server, or on
any non-wiki hosts that might be using the same 404 page. Some server side
coding would presumably be needed to fix this. I'm not sure whether the code
that actually generates these 404 pages is in SVN anywhere; if not, presumably
this needs someone with shell access to actually make the change.)

This is not actually a mediawiki bug.

Someone on Wikipedia manually made the edit link by hand, and its pointing to
the wrong place. I tried to fix in this edit

I also left a note on the talk page of that article.

I added a check for such empty keys and use the page name itself instead when
this is the case, which solves the issue in the QP, in r88991. It seems rather
odd that SMW is returning an empty sort key though, instead of no sort keys. So
if this is a bug, it is still there.

This type of implementation probably isn't the best idea. Most wikis won't
actually have a page at HTTP 404. Non-Wikipedia sites would most likely get a
redlink and some other language sites would also be redlinked (different title,
no article).

If we really decide we hate it, then it should just be removed. However, I
don't think there's a problem with it. Wikipedia is our encyclopedic site, so
we should link there in cases like these. The message is also already in
English, so linking to an English site shouldn't matter. We should find out a
nice way to translate this message soon and then we can link to whatever page
that language wants. In the meantime, people can navigate through interwikis.

Note, in the log excerpt, the time that the user was blocked at is localized to
whatever timezone is set in your preferences. However the user is blocked
message is displayed based on if the user is actually blocked. Its unclear if
this bug is the result of people being confused by localizing the time in the
log excerpt (/me personally has never liked how we only modify some timestamps
for timezone), or if the message is being included after the block has actually
expired.

[Bug 29169] PHP Sucks

(In reply to comment #4)
That would really just address the external symptoms, not the underlying
 suckage.

php sucks in many ways. And while the summary of this bug is vague, the first
comment references only that link. If you want other bits of PHP suck fixed,
file other bugs for them and we'll make this a tracking bug.

2011-05-27 Thread bugzilla-daemon

--- Comment #29 from Brion Vibber br...@wikimedia.org 2011-05-27 21:29:38 UTC

I also see this for some things still using legacy action=raw to load site css
pages, such as [[MediaWiki:Filepage.css]] being loaded by ImagePage:

http://stormcloud.local/trunk/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Filepage.cssaction=rawmaxage=18000usemsgcache=yesctype=text%2Fcsssmaxage=18000

!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC -//IETF//DTD HTML
2.0//ENhtmlheadtitleForbidden/title/headbodyh1Forbidden/h1pInvalid
file extension found in PATH_INFO or QUERY_STRING. Raw pages must be accessed
through the primary script entry point./p/body/html

Manually adding a '*' on the end of the URL resolves it (as does removing the
'.' from the '.css' though obviously then it doesn't load!)

The poll at wikipedia has nothing to do with this. (Unless we want to just drop
the feature on the basis of no one likes it).

Re-opening since nothing has changed since it was re-opened in comment 5.

Bug 28840 seems to be the same issues though specifically mentioning
ResourceLoader initially. The checks similarly break action=raw for titles
containing periods, such as we use for all JS/CSS pages not loaded via RL. (Not
the traditional check that actually does make you use the index.php point, but
the new extension checks on the query string are the problem here.)

Possibly this should just be marked dupe? Adding a dep for now.

I think they are different unrelated issues. This one is about the check thats
been there forever, where the other one is about the check just recently
introduced.
