[Bug 20852] Option to not do a global login

Ditto. Yesterday we (WMI) had a Wikipedia editing course with some NGO people
we're working with and they found this extremely confusing (not very scientific
argument, but still).
I think this should be reverted as soon as possible, even before another
solution is implemented; it's easy for us to get accustomed to a thing like
this, which however is now actively hindering normal users from editing.

Andrew,

I need your help to overcome this problem of not having error messages in lqt:
the modules do not show error alert messages; they appear to get caugth
somewhere else. You can try this for example by intentionally insertings
dieUsage() calls.

The lqt.js already has a lot of FIXME comments related to error handling, so
it looks as if something's is broken or otherwise going wrong as indicated by
Brion in the first comment.

Thank you for the quick reply.

@Bryan, I am unable to test 1.16.4. I can only confirm that the fault was in
some earlier versions. I was patching it for a while without reporting it.

@Roan, 'fix' is the wrong word then, I only hacked it to make it work for me.

I appreciate the PostgreSQL support. It's mostly solid. If you think it might
help, I could file a bug/feature request for improved testing of DB
compatibility. Automated tests might be a more efficient way to detect faults
like these. Please let me know.

I'd hate to think that announcements about Wikimania, Board votes, etc wouldn't
be available to mobile users. Just because their on small devices doesn't mean
that we can't inform them of the important discussions happening. This would be
especially useful if were able to surface a local meetup to a potential
contributor.

The use case for this is wider then just the fundraiser. In general it would be
good for CentralNotice to be mobile aware.

The notices built with CentralNotice are intended for regular (full-size) web
browsers. If banners are going to be implemented on mobile devices, the banners
themselves will have to be reimplemented (more text focus, fewer images). I'm
not sure if that means making CentralNotice mobile aware or not. The broader
issue isn't strictly about dismissability, though.

 wouldn't

We don't currently display any notices on the mobile platform (many would count
that as a bonus)

I doubt many users would be mobile interface/platform only users so they
shouldn't really be missing them anyway.

I don't think i've ever personally have seen a message sent that would be a
benefit to those on the mobile platform anyway.

Yep this is very annoying, since there is no automagic link from insecure site

I see several bugs mention similar problems, like bug 29053 as well as several

or should we consider javascript hacks permanent, and start deploying them
worldwide?

 Bug #: 29410
   Summary: Provide article links to secure counterparts
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: minor
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: SSL related
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: g...@grin.hu

Per bug 5440 it is pretty easy to fall off the wrong way of secure wikimedia
links and end up on an article without SSL, and it is pretty tedious to get
back to the secure site: at least I have to either clone a secure window and
search for the given article or copy the secure URL and type the article there.

Looks like an easy hack for a while (until bug 5440 gets fixed, that is just a
few years to come) to generate an automagic link to the secure counterpart of
any article, with a very small icon or link in the menu. Should be installed on
all projects which support secure logins, unfortunately.

Our ops people are working on a proper HTTPS solution, so people can access the
secure sites using URLs like https://en.wikipedia.org instead of the horrible
secure.wm.o hack. This will be implemented using protocol-relative URLs (e.g.
//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo) for things like images and interwiki links.

With a proper HTTPS implementation described in bug 5440 comment 15, this
should be moot, right? People will be able to simply change http:// to https://
in their address bar, which is one click and one keypress, and wouldn't fall
off secure in the first place thanks to protocol-relative URLs.

Most people don't really use the secure interface so this would just create
even more interface junk which most people don't want. SO could probably make a

Well since it's not advised to host different secure hosts on the same IPs (due
to braindead browsers apart from many other reasons, for example those listed
in bug 20643) I'm not convinced this will happen soon. (At least JeLuf doesn't
seem to see the light, and I tend to second his opinion.)

Nevertheless I'd be happy to see which way we're supposed to head and when do
we plan to get there, be that the current ugliness or the future beauty. :-P

(And this bug isn't even ASSIGNED, heh.)

[Bug 29411] New: when there is a picture on the left side of a section, the next section starts below the previous section's text, but should be below the picture

2011-06-15 Thread bugzilla-daemon

 Bug #: 29411
   Summary: when there is a picture on the left side of a section,
the next section starts below the previous section's
text, but should be below the picture
   Product: Wikimedia
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: General/Unknown
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: rabier.guilla...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified

I have seen this problem on the Absinthe page for the section See also, see
for yourself:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe#See_also

There is an image to illustrate the section Cultural influence. It is located
on the left side of the text. But the picture's height is bigger than the
text's. As a result, the next section (See also) is right after the text of
section Cultural influence, beside the picture example.

To me, it would make more sense to be below the picture, at the same level as
the other sections.

Right now, it looks like the section See also is a subsection of the section
Cultural influence.

This problem occurs in all browsers.

Now, I don't know if this will be considered a bug or if this is done on
purpose but I submit anyway in case it's the former.

So, if I export a Category page (for instance, Category:Person), it will
definitely be in OWL Full. The reason is SMW uses OWL Object Datatype
properties to describe an OWL class (such as swivt:page, and
swivt:wikiNamespace). I don't think it's an urgent requirement tho. But, it
will be nice if I could export my SMW data into OWL DL ontology. Thanks!

Using properties to describe classes is allowed in the current version of OWL
DL (of 2009; the old version of OWL has been superseded). See
http://www.w3.org/TR/owl2-new-features/#F12:_Punning for some explanation of
this new feature. Most current OWL tools should support this properly.

We know, and we don't care. This restriction in XHTML is stupid, and was
removed in HTML5. See bug 24500 comment 7 for the full argument for keeping
these empty lists.

[Bug 6100] Allow different directionality (rtl/ltr) for user interface and wiki content

2011-06-15 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6100

--- Comment #41 from Robin Pepermans (SPQRobin) robinp.1...@gmail.com
2011-06-15 17:09:48 UTC ---
Nikerabbit introduced $wgBetterDirectionality in r69185 (this was not yet
mentioned here but is in fact very useful for working to resolve this bug).
When that variable is set to true, the bodyContent contains a div with a lang
and dir attribute depending on the site content language.

When r81622 is combined with the changes made under $wgBetterDirectionality
(see following code), the main issue mentioned in comment 40 is resolved.

In ResourceLoaderContext.php:
if( $wgBetterDirectionality ) {
$this-direction = Language::factory( $this-language )-getDir();
} else {
$this-direction = $wgContLang-getDir();
}

I would commit it, but I thought I'd first post it here.

If this is done, there are only some relatively smaller bugs left (as far as I
can see) that can be fixed under $wgBetterDirectionality. When most bugs are
fixed, it can eventually be set to true by default.

[Bug 29409] Upgrading from 1.16 fails with MySQL server has gone away

2011-06-15 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29409

--- Comment #3 from Brion Vibber br...@wikimedia.org 2011-06-15 17:35:46 UTC
---
'server has gone away' usually means one of:

* some bit of data transferred was too large for mysql's max packet size
setting, thus the connection was cut off

* the connection was idle for too long while waiting for a query to complete,
thus the connection was cut off

The stuff for cl_collation seems to be mostly ALTER TABLE-y so shouldn't
transfer data, so timeout is the most likely. I remember us having that sort of
problem with long-running dump scripts and such in the past... there's a
database::setTimeout() method, which backup.inc's BackupDumper class triggers
on its dedicated DB connection:

function backupDb() {
$this-lb = wfGetLBFactory()-newMainLB();
$db = $this-lb-getConnection( DB_SLAVE, 'backup' );

// Discourage the server from disconnecting us if it takes a long time
// to read out the big ol' batch query.
$db-setTimeout( 3600 * 24 );

return $db;
}

Might make sense to bump the timeouts during updates too?

I'm going to call this not a bug, more the way html works (I suppose we could
make headers clear:left, but that'd probably be undesired in many instances).

Basically to work around it, add
br style=clear:left

On the line immediately before the ==See Also== (aka at the very end of the
Cultural influence section, but before See Also starts).

I'm going to close this as invalid, but please feel free to re-open if you
disagree.

[Bug 29411] Wiki page headings should clear float

--- Comment #2 from Krinkle krinklem...@gmail.com 2011-06-15 18:17:21 UTC ---
Making bug summary more generic as to it's cause (rather than the result).

br / should only be used if a space / line-break is desired. Otherwise use
div style=clear: left;/div (for picture on the right, use clear: right
and for both clear: both.

The reason this is not going to be fixed in core is because there are many
scenarios all over the place in existing wikis that expect and intend to float
elements next to a heading (such as an infobox).

Alternatively headings could only float the left side, but that would break
layouts with a column of (floated) thumbnails on one side, and left is also
wrong as there are Right-to-left languages to keep in mind as well.

Not a bug. If you want to clear the left/right picture space simply add a
clear element (many wikis have created a Template:Clear with div
style=clear: both;/div in it. Then add {{clear}} before a section to be
safe.

If your wiki does not have any floated infoboxes on the left or right side and
you always want to start a new space, you can add the following to your
MediaWiki:Common.css to automatically apply {{clear}} to all sections:

h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 { clear: both; }

To ask what might be a really stupid question... Couldn't the secure site and
the non-secure site just use two different $wgInterwikiCache db's? Or would
that break in all sorts of weird ways.

Not that it matters much if we're going to get shiny https://en.wikipedia.org
style secure sites soon. :D

It looks like Tim has been doing most of the work on this to fix the problem,
updating the assignee to reflect that. Looks like the this is actually fixed,
too, since the fixes mentioned Comment #7 have been merged.

I'm sure you know how to reopen this if I'm wrong ;)

The fix.

I am running a server with:

MediaWiki 1.16.5
Maps 0.7.6.1
Semantic MediaWiki 1.5.6
Semantic Maps 0.7.6.1

Default language is Russian ($wgLanguageCode = ru;). Name of type Geographic
coordinate is NOT localized, it is still displayed in English language,
regardless of the file
extensions/SemanticMediaWiki/languages/SMW_LanguageRu.php:

protected $m_DatatypeLabels = array(
   ...
   '_geo' = 'Географическая координата', // name of the geocoord type
   ...

I found the cause of this bug. It is
extensions/SemanticMaps/includes/SM_GeoCoordsValue.php file:

public static function initGeoCoordsType() {
SMWDataValueFactory::registerDatatype( '_geo', __CLASS__, 'Geographic
coordinate' );
return true;
}

If I remove hardcoded type name:

public static function initGeoCoordsType() {
SMWDataValueFactory::registerDatatype( '_geo', __CLASS__ );
return true;
}

it will be properly localized depending on language. See attached patch.

I would suggest that we do whatever the jQuery UI skins do regarding link
styling. Unfortunately, I'm full time on fundraising now, so I don't have any
time to work on this.

I am running a server with:

PHP 5.2.17
MediaWiki 1.16.5
Maps 0.7.6.1
Semantic MediaWiki 1.5.6
Semantic Maps 0.7.6.1

Geographic coordinates are displayed incorrectly. For example:

{{#coordinates:55° N, 45° E}}

is displayed as (it is a localized version):

55° 0' 5 С, 45° 0' 5 В

Note that displayed coordinates are not 55° N 45° sharp, but 5 bigger (both
latitude and longitude). Such a small precision is not acceptable.

This can be seen at: http://russian-test.referata.com/wiki/45

BTW, this public site uses another version of PHP, namely, 5.3.6.

I know that CN isn't used for banner delivery. What i was talking about was
allowing CN to be mobile aware so that we don't have to hack html files by hand
to show any messages. But since the consensus here has been to remove it ..
lets do that.

That'll free up some nice room on the mobile site :)

Patrick or anyone who gets to it first .. lets drop it.

In general, this would have issues with spaces being encoded as _ instead of
%20 or + as required, and that it would all fall down if short urls weren't in
use (but if we're just looking at Wikinews specificly, that might not be that
big a deal).

Tags are quite widely used in the blog world, and I believe there are many
real world use cases of people using such information, so it probably would be
cool. I personally think that most (all) wikis category structures are
essentially close enough to tag's that this could apply everywhere, but I
suppose that's debatable.

Relevant info: http://microformats.org/wiki/rel-tag

HTML5 spec also mentions it very briefly: The tag keyword indicates that the
tag that the referenced document represents applies to the current document.
