[Bug 31090] New: several issues with #babel

2011-09-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31090

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 31090
   Summary: several issues with #babel
   Product: MediaWiki extensions
   Version: any
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: normal
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Babel
AssignedTo: rob...@rhl.me.uk
ReportedBy: a.d.be...@web.de
Classification: Unclassified

I have found several issues with the babel-Extension, and I'm too lazy to
create a report each.
* Substitution does not work, because the babel table misses the extra css
file.
* The used templates only show up in the used templates section after you've
clicked on [preview]:
http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Benutzer:Raymondaction=edit#mw-editTools,
and they don't show up in the backlinklist.
* There is no way to set the gender parameter (mw), which often has a option
for the value 1. My propose would be to allow named parameters, which then
are forwarded to each od the used templates.
* And of course there is no way to configure the look-and-feel of
non-template-based boxes, which was the big point for all those smaller wikis
that really /need/ the extension. But that's Bug 31084.

* Also, there might be problems with the for-loop. It should not allow more
cycles than the number of supported languages. I've tried, you can make every
server report technical errors by passing 5000 three-letter arguments to the
function. I'm not sure whether this is a security hole.
* I guess the extension can be heavily misused, cause every user is allowed to
create templates in the [[{{int:babel-template}}...]]-schema. As an example for
what is possible today try
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spezial:Vorlagen_expandieren?input=%7B%7B%23Babel%3AWikiquote%7CSUL%7C~%7Ccommitted%20identity%7CEgyp%7Cfr%2FDoku%7D%7D,
but I think there are clever minds who will use the #babel function as a
replacement for the #forargs function. I also think it would be more suitable
to activate that one, and build the normal Babel-Templates with it, as the
system messages for understanding of languages could be used on smaller wikis
where there are no templates.

I have found several issues with the babel-Extension, and I'm too lazy to
 create a report each.

Handling these kinds wishlists in bugzilla is very cumbersome. Developers are
already pressed on working the code, they are not going to be happy if they
need to spend time splitting these into individual reports.

 * Substitution does not work, because the babel table misses the extra css
 file.

It is not a template.

 * The used templates only show up in the used templates section after you've
 clicked on [preview]

This could be looked into.

 * There is no way to set the gender parameter (mw), which often has a option
for the value 1. My propose would be to allow named parameters, which then
are forwarded to each od the used templates.

So this is a feature request for custom user templates? The gender already
works for inbuilt language strings.

 * And of course there is no way to configure the look-and-feel of
non-template-based boxes, which was the big point for all those smaller wikis
that really /need/ the extension. But that's Bug 31084.

Works for me.

 * Also, there might be problems with the for-loop. It should not allow more
cycles than the number of supported languages. I've tried, you can make every
server report technical errors by passing 5000 three-letter arguments to the
function. I'm not sure whether this is a security hole.

You only get an error, no security issues involved. We might have a fix for
this issue.

 * I guess the extension can be heavily misused

Everything can be misused.

I've also got a feeling that the version in 1.18wmf1 is now a version from
1.16wmf4

In r97086 I moved it from a 1.16wmf4 special to using REL1_18 directly..

Looking at the schema changes, there is nothing since September 2010, which is
well before the 1.17 branchpoint

After feature request 25295 was resolved any reviewer can see who in that
moment is reviewing the article. Worse it does not need to click on review
(sichten in the German language interface) but appearantly any viewing of a
diff link results in this.

I consider this new feature as critical since it can be misused for profiling
other users or to make conclusions wether an article is on a user's watch list.

** The feature should be removed BEFORE the great update which lies only a few
days ahead. **

[Bug 31084] Babel extension: nl-wikisource/nl-wikiquote/nl-wiktionary: configuration needed

2011-09-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31084

--- Comment #3 from Niklas Laxström niklas.laxst...@gmail.com 2011-09-22
12:43:52 UTC ---
(In reply to comment #0)
Regarding babel on the three projects nl-Wikiquote, nl-Wikisource and
 nl-Wiktionary:

 * Bottom-line of babel extension shouldn't be shown as we do not want to use
categories on these projects. (In the rest of the babel it is done fine with
 no
 links to categories.)

Customize Mediawiki:babel-footer

 * The top link should have as text 'Taalvaardigheid' in stead of
'Babel-gebruikersinformatie'. The link itself should link to
'w:Wikipedia:Babel' as we do not need double explanation pages while one is
 sufficient.

Customize mediawiki:babel

 * Where can we set the links to the languages (on Wikipedia/Wiktionary)?

Customize mediawiki:babel-portal

 * Why has the babel xx-5 such strange color like someone speaks xx-0?

Can be overriden. http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Portal:nl has example of
colors.

 * How can we adjust the colors and the look of the templates, like the font
that is used in the left box?

With site css.

 * When someone speaks his language native, then '-N' is shown. In Dutch it has
to be an -M (and not an -N). Also the left box shouldn't show att all the -M
 neither the -N.

I don't get it. You say it should be -M, but it shouldn't be shown at all?

Recent commits surfaced abysmal parser performance bug with certain kind of
input. Basically it is a template, which uses {{int}} to fetch few messages,
which call the template again. This seems to avoid all depth and size related
checks that should prevent this kind of thing happening.

Will commit a minimal parser test that demonstrates the problem.

 Bug #: 31101
   Summary: LocalSettings should be auto-uploaded
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Installation
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: olivier.bea...@gmail.com

Classification: Unclassified

in 1.17 it put it in config/LocalSettings.php and asked you to remove it. My
search-foo isn't coming up with a discussion on why this was changed.

In 1.17 it's asking you to download a file, use some kind of ftp/webftp client
and upload the file.

I am well aware on some setups php cannot write to the local filesystem.

The solution seems simple, if you can write to the filesystem, then generate
the file there and offer the download as an optional alternative to moving it.

Otherwise, offer it up for download per 1.17.

This will be more in line with any kind of 'auto-install', 'auto-upgrade',
'web-configure', 'ext-download', 'ext-install', 'ext-upgrade' feature we may
get in the future. And dare I say, ala wordpress.

And for documentation's sake, I'll note here that I understand putting it in
Config/, you have no real guarantee that the web user is the administrator, so
you're asking some kind of further interaction to ensure the settings saved are
indeed those of the owner of the website.

I agree that while the user is told about this behavior, we can't assume that
any diff view by a user with reviewer permission is the beginning of the review
process, and disclose their behavior to others. If that's the current behavior,
we shouldn't deploy it.

I can see that sharing this information as part of the process could be useful,
but I would suggest an AJAX opt-in link on the diff view:

Show other users that I, Eloquence, am reviewing this page now.

That would actually keep the UI at the current level of complexity since the
message could be replaced with the yellow indicator message once the link has
been clicked.

Doing some compat testing and I found out that this is actually lost
functionality. Here's what Http::get looked like in 1.15

public static function get( $url, $timeout = 'default', $opts = array() ) {
  return Http::request( GET, $url, $timeout, $opts );

public static function request( $method, $url, $timeout = 'default',
$curlOptions = array() ) {

and $curlOptions can accept CURLOPT_USERAGENT

[Bug 31093] Remove feature requested with bug #25295

--- Comment #2 from Aaron Schulz aschulz4...@gmail.com 2011-09-22 17:59:48

(In reply to comment #0)
After feature request 25295 was resolved any reviewer can see who in that
moment is reviewing the article. Worse it does not need to click on review
(sichten in the German language interface) but appearantly any viewing of a
 diff link results in this.

I consider this new feature as critical since it can be misused for profiling
other users or to make conclusions wether an article is on a user's watch
 list.

** The feature should be removed BEFORE the great update which lies only a few
 days ahead. **

 See:

 http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Sichten2.png

 Greetings, Matthias

Even on 1.17 you don't have to click the review diff links (e.g. at
Special:PendingChanges). The main difference now is that:
(a) The user is told that they are advertised as reviewing the page
(b) Other users are notified that user X is already reviewing when they also
view the diff.

[Bug 31102] New: buildTool function uses improper for loop for filters

 Bug #: 31102
Summary: buildTool function uses improper for loop for filters
   Product: MediaWiki extensions

  Platform: All

Status: NEW

ReportedBy: wilson.ji...@gmail.com
CC: roan.katt...@gmail.com, tpars...@wikimedia.org
Classification: Unclassified

This problem affects wikiEditor for MW 1.17 - I have not tried other versions.

In jQuery.wikiEditor.toolbar.js, the buildTool function improperly uses a
for..in loop to iterate through an array (specifically, for applying filters).
This works fine as long as nobody has added to the Array.prototype, but if they
have the for..in loop will pick up non-integer keys.

Although some JavaScript libraries shy away from making changes to prototypes,
there are plenty of legacy ones which still do.

This bug causes blocking JavaScript errors whenever an addition to
Array.prototype has a value which causes jQuery to return a wrapped array
instead of an actual jQuery collection.

click around to different pages seems okay for now. creating a new page works
fine. edits to any page in default namespace fail.

ProductVersion
MediaWiki1.14.1
PHP5.3.3-7+squeeze3 (cgi-fcgi)
MySQL5.1.49-3

No extensions.

I'm not sure where problems (and solutions) with older releases are documented,
especially for people who are trying to do compat testing with older releases
(extensions that are expected to work on older releases, like
Extension:Update), so I filed here. I'd consider it FIXED once it's documented
in the proper place (which could be here, I suppose, but I'd rather see a
document set on running older versions).

I'm going to try running 1.14.0 next and see what happens.

I just checked out SVN HEAD for this, someone has already fixed it. Shall I

Per my comment above, this is a request for a place to document compat testing
configurations, mainly for extension authors. Not for some kind of 1.14.2
release.

Considering

http://s23.org/wikistats/mediawikis_html.php?sort=version_descth=0%20or%20good%20is%20NULLlines=1000

This should be a real concern for extension authors, even if core support has
moved on.

If you don't recommend using distro packages for 1.14.X what do you recommend?

Please don't close a bug before actually reading the request.

This site is for support of the MediaWiki software. Per
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Version_lifecycle, 1.14 is NOT SUPPORTED,
INCLUDING SECURITY FIXES. Everyone using it should use it at their own risk
only. We can only advice them to upgrade. Instead of packages, which are
usually broken anyway, we recommend using vanilla tarball from mediawiki.org.
Please don't reopen just because you like it so.

I downloaded from http://dumps.wikimedia.org/mediawiki/1.14/ I don't know why
you assume I used a distro package.

I'm setting up a testing sandbox to make sure some of my extensions
(Extension:Update and Extension:Realnames) work on older versions. The first
because it's about upgrading to newer stuff from older stuff, the second
because it's a corp extension and my audience is on older cores
(unfortunately).

I often see extension authors talk about still using a deprecated method of
doing things (see SpecialPage aliasing, or ShowSearchRealnames) so that they
don't alianate the user base who are not always free to upgrade core.

I'd like to see documentation (which I'm willing to contribute to) about the
trials and tribulations (see above) of setting up sandboxes for older
non-core-supported versions.

It's my extension, I SUPPORT IT. But will mediawiki and it's community help me
document the process of said support?

I've reoppened, renamed bug to Create documentation on problems running older
versions and set it enhancement for unspecified version on all
platforms.

Being new I don't know where to start this documentation, maybe instead of GO
AWAY someone could say oh great, you want to contribute, here's where you'd
probably want to do that!.

[Bug 31103] Create documentation on problems running older versions

2011-09-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31103

--- Comment #6 from Brion Vibber br...@wikimedia.org 2011-09-22 19:23:20 UTC
---
If you'd be interested in writing up your notes on a page on mediawiki.org,
please feel free -- it's a wiki and should allow you to get started right away.

This will also get the pages indexed for search on mediawiki.org (local search)
and via google etc searches on a relevant domain.

But do be aware that the MediaWiki dev community doesn't traditionally put a
lot of effort into maintenance of old releases beyond a couple versions of
security patch releases.

You'll probably find a combination of:
* old bugs that are fixed in newer versions of MediaWiki
* incompatibilities between old MediaWiki code and newer versions of other
packages like PHP and MySQL

For instance reference-related ($foo) issues are common on newer versions of
PHP, because PHP keeps changing the rules on what's an acceptable use of
references. Due to historic usages from the PHP 4 era, a lot of extension hooks
are common places to see this because references got used in places where,
under PHP 5, they don't need to be (and now sometimes don't work).

That looks like the sort of thing you're running into up above.

Workarounds are basically:

1) Don't run the old versions if you can help it!

2) If you must run an old version of MediaWiki, you can either track down all
those bug fixes (and still be open to whatever other bugs and security problems
there are in the system)... or

3) you can downgrade the other bits of your system to match it in which case
it'll more likely run... but you may be vulnerable to bugs and security
problems in those other packages as well.

I think people understand that. They are objecting that their username is
disclosed without their permission when they may be looking for the diff for
other reasons, or may only want to apply an initial gut-feel judgment to the
page, but not necessarily review it.

Right. I'm trying to clarify the difference in behavior. I already have a patch
to disable setting the notice except from the (review) link on the special
pages.

[Bug 28995] Public interface for getting loader state of a ResourcerLoader module

--- Comment #3 from Bergi a.d.be...@web.de 2011-09-22 19:46:08 UTC ---
It's not so much about getting the loading state, it's about knowing whether a
module is loaded/does load or not. For example there might be user scripts that
enhance modules. They can't use loader.using, because that would load the
module even when it's not needed.
Of course there may be other methods to determine whether a module is loaded on
the current page (like simple [list, of, page, names].indexOf(wgPageName)-1),
but it would be better if the resource loader had an api for that.

Having the webserver write the file means that it's created as webserver
writable, and people often forget to fix that so it's not webserver writable.
The result is numerous MediaWiki installs with a webserver writable php file
that's now the easiest target to attack a wiki with if you find a vulnerability
in the webserver or are on a server with separate safe user accounts, but a
shared webserver user.

I know we've expressed desire to improve our system for configuring and
installing extensions, and checking for updates. But I don't believe we ever
planned to have MediaWiki go and download php files from some source on the
internet and drop it right into it's own install. That kind of practice is
horribly insecure, that's the kind of thing that creates critical security
vulnerabilities.
By the way, last time I checked WordPress' updater seamed to like using FTP
rather than using webserver writable files.

As for config, trust me, if we add in the ability to configure MediaWiki from
the web side, we won't be doing that by writing to a php file that could be
used as an attack vector, or even kill the wiki if you accidentally manage to
insert some invalid php into it.

I often see extension authors talk about still using a deprecated method of
doing things (see SpecialPage aliasing, or ShowSearchRealnames) so that they
don't alianate the user base who are not always free to upgrade core.

...you heard wrong. Using the deprecated method of SpecialPage aliasing has
nothing to do with compatibility with old versions of MediaWiki. The new way of
doing it was just never promoted enough for people to remember it existed, and
the Translate extension used by TWN seams to have never bothered add support
for the new format (which is what is used to actually add those translations).

[Bug 31105] New: Create a way to watch users in addition to pages

2011-09-22 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31105

   Web browser: ---
 Bug #: 31105
Summary: Create a way to watch users in addition to pages
   Product: MediaWiki
   Version: unspecified
  Platform: All
OS/Version: All
Status: NEW
  Severity: enhancement
  Priority: Unprioritized
 Component: Watchlist
AssignedTo: wikibugs-l@lists.wikimedia.org
ReportedBy: svi...@gmail.com
Classification: Unclassified

This is an enhancement request or even possibly an extension request. The
latter of which, I intend to write myself, but I don't mind keeping some
records on the matter and more importantly a discussion.

The idea of this proposal is to create the ability to watch a specific user's
edits for a period of time (after which it will have to be manually renewed
(such a time limit will be restricted to a maximum of 2 weeks per default, but
will be configurable in LocalSettings). In addition, to further avoid
Wikihounding[1], the right to use this feature will also be limited to sysops
per default.

The idea is that often times a new user (or old user for that matter) may make
a suspicious edit or two. Nothing that would either necessary require a
warning, but might be suspicious behaviour to the sysop who discovers the edit
him/herself.

Rather than keeping several tabs running of Special:Contributions open, it
should be possible to watch a specific user like watching a specific page. The
time limit is inserted to ensure an autocleaning list (where no longer
interesting users gets cleaned off) and to avoid overreach of the functionality
for potential harassment.

The edits by these users will appear in the Watchlist and in bold in the Recent
Changes. Similar to how regularly watched pages do.
