What happens if nothing is selected? The checkbox must be hidden or at least disabled (grayed out). I guess nothing is selected 99% of the time and therefor the checkbox is useless 99% of the time. What happens if I click Find next and then decide to enable the within selection checkbox? Find next changes the selection. This works as expected as i only fetch the selection upon opening the dialog, changes to the selection when the dialog is open does not have any effect. As I said I have a similar feature in my [[dewiki:User:TMg/autoFormatter]]: If something is selected it uses the selection. If nothing is selected it uses the full textarea. From what I heard from my users this works as expected. A simple way to make this visible to the user is to change the title of the popup from Search and replace to Search and replace in selection. Maybe change the button from Replace all to Replace all in selection. Related: * Bug 40797 (duplicate, but I'm not sure which one to close) * Bug 23942 (can't have search and replace and insert internal link brackets without showing a popup buttons the same time) * Bug 23992 (search and replace broken in Opera 12) As your request, i removed the checkbox and added a new title to the dialog if there is a selection of thext when clicking on the search and replace functionality. Did however not change any button texts, as this seems to cause very long button names, where the dialog is quite small. This is a problem because the div steals events and mouse interaction from the
UI elements below it. For instance, in VisualEditor:
1. Open a page in VE
2. Type '[['. The wikitext warning appears
3. Click the warning to dismiss it
4. Reveal #mw-notification-area in the inspector and observe how it's on top of
part of the save button
5. Very carefully move the mouse over the save button, and you'll notice a
small (12px tall) area where mouse pointer is a normal pointer instead of a
hand. Clicking in this area does not press the save button.

This is a bug.): VE seems to make unnecessary changes. I wouldn't mind so much if it always helped to maintain the layout of invisible elements, but normally it just screws them (like infoboxes, or position of templates), without any effect on the rendered page but with a less easily readable wikitext editing window. What I notice now though are totally unnecessary and hard to explain changes to ref names. For some reason, VE decides that all ref names need to be in quotes, which is not true at all and doesn't help one bit. It also decides that between the final quote and the forward slash, there needs to be a space. All this has no effect on the rendered page, and doesn't make the wikitext page any easier (or harder) to read, so why does VE bother doing this, which only helps to make diffs a lot longer. Take a look at e.g. [10]: can you easily see if any significant change has been made, and what that may be? First difference; ref name=globsec-arjun/ becomes ref name=globsec-arjun / Further: ref name=nomorearjuns becomes ref name=nomorearjuns and so on. I have not found the actual significant difference between the old and new version. What is the purpose and benefit of this? If VE would always make the invisible layout clearer and better, fine, but VE doesn't care one bit about wikitext layout, so I don't get this useless editing. As I mentioned in a previous comment, the leakage seemed to come from not-released arrays of code deoptimization_data. If I remember correctly V8's arch that could come from virtual method calls over many different implementations, debugging/profiling artifacts, or a few other things. And of course it could be our code or some library leaking closures, but I think those would show up differently, especially if the code is used only once.
