Configuration wise, activating hstore is done with a single command line switch to osm2pgsql. I believe my PPA packages already install the hstore extension into postgresql automatically. Performance wise during import / diff processing the overhead should be minimal as that is not really where the bottleneck is. Sizewize I think the overhead is somewhere on the order of 100GB if I am not mistaken. However, given that the non hstore db is just over 256GB and the hstore one is below 512GB, chances are that overhead is not really much concern. Furthermore there is some talk in moving the main osm style-sheet to (partly) use hstore as well. It would probably keep all the data in postgres columns for which there are where clauses on the rendering sql selection filteres and move the rest into hstore. So far this hasn't happened, as the performance impact during rendering isn't well known yet. But with pressure to include data in the map rendering for which the current schema doesn't have columns, I would think it is likely to happen at some point in the not too distant future. So I would recommend to activate it just to be flexible and prepared for future changes without having to re-import everything again. From what I have seen, there are little downsides and several benefits. Consequently it doesn't operate on Chinese or Thai (which don't use word boundaries), but does for Korean, Latin and Cyrillic languages, and others (which do). Theoretically it would be possible to build some code for applying algorithmic word boundary rules for Thai, but that's both complex and slow, so if that is desired it should be opened as an enhancement (and we'd need to see how we can make it only slow down users who are editing in Thai). It seems that a large number of closures are responsible for the memory leak. From browsing the data a bit it seems likely that the claimPage closure is responsible for much of the leaking, which is not surprising as it is called so often. I also see a large number of Error instances in the heap, which might indicate that an error code path (transaction rollback?) is responsible for the leak. The use of the mysql bindings seems to differ a bit from the documentation at https://github.com/felixge/node-mysql#transactions. Diffs I see are the execute() and the end and calling rollback on the return value of startTransaction rather than db. There are some other structures that look a bit cyclical like the transUpdateCB binding. The other difference is that the thank button is created via a separate extension, while mentions are built in to Echo. When you checkout these external repos into your working copy of MW, they always get listed in the results of git status when that command is run in the higher directory levels (inside MW). This also introduces the risk of incorrectly adding those skins to your patch when you carelessly run git commit -am ... I believe these were the reasons we (rightfully) added svnignore in the old days, and .gitignore in the news days, to the /extensions directory.
