The general idea is that lists return results directly, and generators use the output of a list to feed into another module (like a UNIX pipe). So generators essentially are the intended way to combine modules in one query like this. The problem is for some reason list= is also used/necessary in this case. The general problem people seem to be running into with search as a generator is that they want to keep some indication of the ranking despite generators currently being defined as producing an unordered list of pageids (or revids). I'm not opposed to allowing generators to provide additional properties for the generated pages (reopening bug 14859, although I'd probably do it in a different manner than requested there) but it'll take some thought as to how to best do that. I'll put something on [[mw:API/Architecture work/Planning]] so I don't forget to look into it. As for how the API code works in this situation, it instantiates two instances of ApiQueryPrefixSearch, and each instance runs the same code to get a list of titles: $searcher = new TitlePrefixSearch; $titles = $searcher-searchWithVariants( $search, $limit, $namespaces ); The processing of that list of titles is different, but it should theoretically be the same titles in the list. What seems to be going on is that this code is not entirely deterministic. Searches aren't deterministic because the data changes under them. lsearchd was _more_ deterministic than cirrus because it changed slower and had fewer shards and replicas. The list shouldn't drastically change but it will change some. How drastic are the changes? Also, are there things from the search results that you need that you can't get by using it as a generator? Restarted Zuul which came up with non jobs registered at all (since Jenkins was down, it obviously could not register any job). Some changes have been sent and interpreted by Zuul which reported the jobs do not exist (NOT_REGISTERED). Whenever Jenkins came back, it registered the job again which make them available to Zuul. I used 'recheck' on the above change and the jobs are running properly. Not sure of a good way to prevent that. This was changed in Ib751ee3f4074a60f3b53b0afe3cc2dfc3e17b2f7 in pwb 2.0 so versions prior to that won't work with non-ASCII local filenames and versions with that won't work with non-ASCII wiki page names. The problem is simply that the 'filename'-value in the header of the file/chunk entry (not to be confused with the 'filename' entry in the MIME request). For example: Content-Type: image/jpeg MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-disposition: form-data; name=file; filename*=utf-8''%C3%9C.jpg Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary [… binary data …] This would be the RFC2231 compliant encoding of a non-ASCII character, which would be used by default in Python 3. Python 2 instead does a strange encoding of the complete line (this may not represent the same text as above but similar): Content-disposition: =?utf-8?b?Zm9ybS1kYXRhOyBuYW1lPSJmaWxlIjsgZmlsZW5hbWU9?= =?utf-8?b?IsOcMi5qcGci?= Both are not accepted by the MediaWiki server and are answered with: badupload_file: File upload param file is not a file upload; be sure to use multipart/form-data for your POST and include a filename in the Content-Disposition header. Or Python 2: missingparam: One of the parameters filekey, file, url, statuskey is required It is possible to leave it UTF8 encoded although that is (afaics) not compliant with the RFCs related to MIME which say that the header may only contain US-ASCII characters.
