This is not a bug, it is a useful feature.

1: Just returning an empty string means that things will look different when
reading a page and in edit preview, which will be confusing and means we can't
test our page code in edit preview but have to save to see the result.

2: Returning the last editor of the page would be "correct".

But the current behaviour of returning the current username when a user is edit
previewing a page is useful. We already use it in the editnotice system on the
English Wikipedia to detect when a user is editing his own user and user talk
page. Then we display the link to edit the user's user-space editnotice to the
user himself (and to admins). Other users don't see that link.

And we are now going to use it in the "test-template" on the English Wikipedia.
That is a template that will supply functionality that solves bug 22135. The
curios can read more about that at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Davidgothberg#Proposed_enhancement_for_testing_templates
.

So please don't "fix" this, it isn't broken.

Bawolff: This can't be solved with javascript, since javascript don't see the
meta-templates and sub-templates called from the templates on the page.
Meta-templates can be many steps away from the templates we see in the page
code. And testing meta-templates is when we most would need this "test mode".

However, I have figured out how to do this with only template code (albeit
slightly less convenient). See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Davidgothberg#Proposed_enhancement_for_testing_templates
. I will implement this as the {{test-template}} at the English Wikipedia.

This is dangerous, per comment 2. In combination with
$wgAllowExternalImages=true this is *lethal*. It also impedes our ability to
implement caching of these objects, and it will always be inconsistent and
confusing (cf
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Code/MediaWiki/49575#code-comments).

The word should display the correct previous user wherever that concept makes
sense: edit notices especially, but also places like CodeReview. Other places,
it should display something that's not a privacy vulnerability.

Yes, it would be a useful feature, if we wanted it (see the WONTFIX'd bug 4196
and its various dupes). But the behavior of {{REVISIONUSER}} on an invalid rev
IDs, that is indeed a bug. It should NOT be defaulting to $wgUser, it should be
returning an empty string (or other sane value) as I pointed out in comment #5.

Your correct, the js solution i proposed would only work with the templates

As for {{test-template}}. Thats quite an ingenious use (abuse?) of template

Curious. Can you confirm that in the copy you have installed, in the function
efContributorsAddonSetup() in ContributorsAddon.php, the last line is 'return
true;'. If not, what is the last bit, and does adding the return portion fix
things?

If it does exist and is still failing, I'm curious as to how this relates to
bug 21907. Maybe it's the 5.3.1 reference bug showing up?

Fixed the warning about reference/value in r61246. This has been broken since
the extension was written in r25146, $parseroutput was never passed by
reference, since it was introduced in r16211.

This may (or may not) fix your issue with the exception being thrown. If it
does, this was the underlying cause of that :)

For some formats like tables or lists a parameter style for and individual
Inline-CSS-Style would be nice. For example for lists or tables the font-size
could be changed. This can now be done by sourinding the query by a div with
this style. But embeding this into the query would make the source of the page
better to read.

If you do a CU for a limited time period (i.e. 1 week instead of all), the

Example checking the IPs from a user:

For a period of two weeks:

xx.xx.xx.xx (block) (date-date) [25] (~500 for all users)

For the all contribs:

xx.xx.xx.xx (block) (date-date) [500]

Do you mean that there aren't translations of the
languages? The translations are being handled by
http://translatewiki.net/wiki/Translating:Wikimedia_mobile

And anyone is welcome to join that project and give
good indic translations.

I tried http://as.m.wikipedia.org and the search function
works. We just don't have translations yet.

If you could provide more details about what you mean,
I'd be happy to sort this out.

[Bug 3821] CharInsert cannot insert combining diacritics on their own

2010-01-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3821

Philippe Verdy changed:

   What|Removed |Added

 CC||verd...@wanadoo.fr

--- Comment #18 from Philippe Verdy 2010-01-19 16:17:38
UTC ---
Ref #1è (Tisza Gergő): you write:
''in case of multiple characters in the charinsert block, all but the first are
thrown away''

Certainly not, this would be exactly against the purpose of the initial bug, as
we really need the possibility of inserting a sequence of '''several'''
characters when they do not exist as precomposed characters.

My proposal would be similar to yours, but the text element content of the
charinsert tag would be '''fully''' inserted.

But given the fact that the text content of charinsert is a list of characters,
the best that we can do is to allow separating them by spaces (including the
possibility of using an initial space to avoid the collision and possible
precomposition with the trailing ">" character that terminates the charinsert
start tag). Then split this text by spaces, ignore leading and traling spaces.
Each remaining sequence becomes a candidate for insertion in the list.

Note that the characters in the text content may also be inserted using numeric
character references (to their unicode code point value in decimal or
hexadecimal). For full XML conformance (and easier editing in edit tools
featuring characters not found in the native script and language of the host
wiki), these numeric character references '''must''' still be interpreted
equivalently.

But I would favor another syntax where the text content of the charinsert tag
would always be the displayed string, using an attribute only to qualify some
spans and limit the characters that will be actually inserted. For example:
č Č š Š ž Ž ◌ˇ

Note that for isolated diacritics (combining characters), the character to
display before it in the selector (and only needed there and that should not
present) should probably be implied. Above I use U+25CC(◌) DOTTED CIRCLE
which is the recommanded one (and supported in many fonts), to avoid the
confusion with the actual precomposed letters which should be clickable
directly and should be visibly distinct. In that case the insert attribute used
above (which specifies which string will be actually inserted in the edited
text when the displayed character is selected), could be avoided completely:
č Č š Š ž Ž ˇ

If some diacritics cannot be used with the default dotted circle, an
"ignorable" (but displayed) quotted substring could be specified:
č Č š Š ž Ž ◌ˇ

Note that the separate element is not really different from the
element above. If the intent is to insert a single Unicode character, the fact
that the referenced character is combining can be infered directly from the
Unicode character properties (there are not so many combining characters in
Unicode, so they could easily be detected in Javascript from a small
preinitialized array of booleans indexed by character, for fast lookups; note
also that some Unicode combining characters are also decomposable, so the
actual characters can also be any string that starts with a combining
character). In that case, this reduces the code to just:

č Č š Š ž Ž ◌ˇ

when specifiying the base character explicitly (U+25CC here, even if this is
the default), or

č Č š Š ž Ž ˇ

when using the default (the string to insert will just ignore the substrings
between , and if the resulting string still starts by a combining character,
it will display a leading U+25CC DOTTED CIRCLE implicitly.

However, I still think that using a separate element will be more
explicit (and will allow a different presentation that can be customized (for
example the display tool could display the diacritic after a non-breaking space
U+00A0, instead of a dotted circle, and will use a distinctive background color
or could display it within a table cell with a thin dotted border, according to
site's stylesheet or user's preference).

So I militate for:

č Č š Š ž Ž ˇ

(the simplest form), with the following optional extensions:

č Č š Š ž Ž  ˇ

The content of charinsert will be a free list of text elements or
elements or elements. Here is the DTD:

>

>

Note also that ***not all*** diacritics are combining in Unicode: this is true
for Thaï which is encoded in visual order without using combining characters
for leading diacritics, but that will often still not display correctly if they
are used before any random characer (with which they may create ligatures, or
could simply be displayed with an undesired trailing dotted circle generated by
the text renderere or by the font).

There is also the need to support the insertion of other "invisible"
characters, notably format controls, and to render, in the diaply tool, various
spaces and make them easily distinguished (for example in clickable table
cells).
In those c

Note that I prefer using a XML/DOM syntax, instead of a Wiki-like syntax,
because parsing wiki is already very tricky, and has a very
limited usage and is not intended to be used within normal wiki pages, but only
within the "Mediawiki:" configuration and localization namespace. I think it's
best to use existing (and strong) DOM parsers here.

I'm not sure if i'm posting in the right category, but I figured I should post
it here before making a new one post.
There's a problem for sorting with Korean page names.
If the page is 가, it will sort under ㄱ if you don't specify where to sort
it (which is what it should do).

However, if I manually sort it to like this: [[Category:name|ㄱ]] it won't
sort under the same ㄱ as before. Instead it will make another ㄱ to sort
under.
So making if a user manually sorts a page under ㄱ, and another has makes a
page that starts with the letter ㄱ and mediawiki automatically sort it --
even though they should be sorted under the same letter, they are not. My

[Bug 21809] commons fails to purge large djvu files

2010-01-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21809

--- Comment #5 from ThomasV 2010-01-19 17:34:56 UTC ---
Purge takes time because of the djvu text layer extraction.

The bug should be fixed in r61258.

[Bug 3821] CharInsert cannot insert combining diacritics on their own

2010-01-19 Thread bugzilla-daemon
https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3821

--- Comment #20 from Philippe Verdy 2010-01-19 17:42:04
UTC ---
As an alternative, if space separation is not an option to separate sequences,
because character lists within are preferably packed as much as
possible like:
a-zA-Z àÀâÂäÄ çÇ éÉèÈêÊëË îÎïÎ ôÔöÖ
ùÙûÛüÜ ÿŸ
where the extensions (, , , elements above) are just
present when needed, then text elements contained (separately from the ,
and ) will be parsed specially: spaces will be ignored there,
unless they are specified as a content-less element.

The only way to separate elements that must contain several characters
(including spaces) that must be inserted as whole will be to separate them by
embedding them within , or subelements as above. So when
parsing the text child elements of , what we get is a list of
isolated Unicode characters (which are implicitly converted as if they were
each within a child element, unless they are combining or controls
according to their Unicode properties, in which case they are converted into
the relevant or ), and of elements (or or
elements) or . The list is explicitly ordered for the default display
order (but the user interface may allow this list to be sorted differently,
without having to edit it).

An interesting option, for speciying ranges of characters is to support the A-Z
syntax, in the text child elements of only (but not within the
child elements of , or which can only be used for a single
unbreakable sequence, and not in which is empty or in which is used
for displaying ignorable characters, and not in the "alt=" and "title="
attributes above). In that case the MINUS-HYPHEN (-) is a syntaxic character
whcih is only valid between two isolated Unicode characters. To specify a
literal minus-hyphen as an insert string, use a -.

To specify a litteral string to insert (for example a wikitable), use also
 as in:

{|class="wikitable"
|-
! Head1 !! Head2
|-
| Cell1 || Cell2
|}

It may also be interesting to use an image/icon instead of a "alt" text
(rendered in a small font within the selector table cell). Instead of using
or or , use an element instead, whose child text
element will be the text to insert in the wiki editor:

...

  alt #PCDATA IMPLIED
  src #PCDATA IMPLIED

And to name each group, all that is required is that the element
itself also has the "title=" attribute for the description hint (which should
then be required), and the "alt=" for the text rendered for the group header
itself (optional, default will be the same as the title).

Will it need an icon rendered instead of this title text ? Would it need more
HTML/CSS rendering, we could then allow the to contain a
element as its first child, and whose content will be rendered instead of the
title, and that will contain arbitrary HTML/CSS code including images. If that
"rich" caption cannot be rendered, the title should still be present and used
(for example when rendering a that represents a group (without any
subgroup), as a named item within a combo-box generated from a higher-level
container allowing to select within a list of groups). Comboboxes
are precious to save screen space, but their rendering is more limited than
general ribbons (toolbars, or blocks of inlineelements) as they can only show
short strings of text with limited formatting.

It may also be interesting to allow other dynamic actions, when the table cell
or button or span is clicked: by default it uses a Javascript charsinsert()
event, but why not allowing something else such as calling custom Javascript?
In that case, could use an optional attribute containing the
default javascript event to call, which would be inherited by all elements in
its parsed list of characters or strings, and the same attribute could be
overriden by specifying it within , or , or or . This
optional attribute should be onclick="", (and there may optionally be
onmousehover="" and so on).

We could also have CSS attributes, for the element (specifying the
default CSS attributes of each generated button) or specifically for each of
, , and children elements (if we assume that each of
them will visually generate a table cell (i.e. a rectangular inline span,
containing one or more visual blocks). But I don't think that the or element.

Reverting r51209 in r52300.

Apparently there is wild disagreement on what the proper formatting is; since
no one complained in the previous 8 years I'm returning it to the status quo.

Reverted and resolving INVALID based on unclear request.

--- Comment #22 from DaSch 2009-06-23 07:15:21 CEST ---
The rules for german formatting are clear, there are just an bunch of people
that have problem with this in german wikipedia, but because of the fact that
this is not only wikipedia software there should be a solution for this

a problem with the solution made was that positiv and negativ numbers where not
formatted equaly

--- Comment #23 from STBR 2009-06-23 12:02:40 CEST ---
DaSch, please realize your pushing of ISO or DIN norms has not been discussed
widely and thus lacking of concensus. Please also realize, that these norms are
almost never applied in electronic media because it has a very simple reason:
DIN recommends using a *small* space, not the usual standard space. But lots of
programs have problems displaying the small space character defined in UTF8
correctly. Due to this, in the de-DE cultural settings the dot is used as
delimiter for thousands. Even Microsoft uses the point as delimiter for German
regional settings in their latest OS Windows Vista. So German Wikipedia advised
to use the point as delimiter due to the technical difficulties.

By implementing this format setting, you would all in a sudden create a massive
inconsistency between the formatting applied by this template and the
formatting used in the more than 920,000 articles created so far. Evenmore, you
would not solve the problem but even replace a valid alternative formatting
(dot) with a completely wrong formatting (standard space). I consider this as a
non desired behavior.

As I already recommended in the marked as duplicate bug 19857, it may be a good
idea to make the formatting rule configureable via an option in the config file
or via mediawiki system message.

--- Comment #24 from DaSch 2009-06-23 12:08:34 CEST ---
maybe it's widely used but it's not valid!

If Microsoft and CLDR use a dot, there is no reason for us to use something
else. Germans have accepted it as status quo, like almost everybody else has
done for "-quotes instead of the typographically correct ones.

--- Comment #1 from STBR 2009-06-17 18:04:33 CEST ---
I support the request of DaB. Although there is a ISO norm stating a point
should not be used, this norm is almost never applied to electronic media
because the corresponding German DIN norms state that a small space should be
used. This character can't be displayed correctly by almost non web browser or
other software on the market resulting in the usage of the point as delimiter
for thousands. Even Microsoft uses the point as delimiter for German regional
settings in their latest OS Windows Vista. So German Wikipedia advised to use
the point as delimiter due to the technical difficulties. Regarding this, the
change made in 18957 renders the second largest Wikipedia with about 920,000
articles to an unconsequent mixture of number formatting. Evenmore, 18957
didn't even use the by DIN proposed delimiter and introduces another "wrong"
attempt to fulfill the norm.

So I strongly suggest reverting 19857 or at least implement a mechanism
allowing each Wikipedia / site using MediaWiki to apply a custom number
formatting via system message or configuration option.

--- Comment #2 from Matthias Becker 2009-06-20

The discussion at
http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Fragen_zur_Wikipedia&oldid=61365468#Vorlagen.C3.A4nderung.3F
further suggests that the change has some unwished effects in sorting tables.
(I can reproduce the described error with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT
5.1; cs; rv:1.9.0.11) Gecko/2009060215 Firefox/3.0.11. Sorting was fine before
the change was made, the template [http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorlage:Dts
Vorlage:dts] which needs the formatnum:-function wasn't changed.

Have a nice day,
Matthias
