IssueCurrent scenario
The template has to be added manually to all the pages. If there are authority links, the template is used, if there are not, the template is simply not visible.

Problem
Many pages which have data on Wikidata do not have authority control template on Wikipedia and many pages which do not have such data have such template. Besides, making it a manual template thing brings in inconsistencies in its placement and use.

@Gehel is there any easy way to copy the .jnl file between machines? It's 413G but probably compressable so we'll be moving about 100-200G of data if we zip it up. But I am not sure how to do it. TASK DESCRIPTIONLooks like after investigation in T188045: wdqs1004 broken wdqs1004 is back to life. We need now to reload data on it. There are the following options:


Stop Updater on one of the wdqs2* severs and copy the database from them
Load data on one of new wdqs2* servers (T187800} and then copy the DB from there
Wait until the latest dump https://dumps.wikimedia.org/wikidatawiki/entities/20180312/ is there (probably Thursday, dumps are slow right now) and then load the dump and parse it and reload the database.

I think Ballotpedia has this data. E.g.: https://ballotpedia.org/Marco_Rubio

Not sure however if it's structured or available in API form. It also
has state level politicians, e.g.: https://ballotpedia.org/Bill_Monning
- but it seems it's even harder to parse there.

Ok, I misparsed all of that.

So next steps:


Chris traces out and sees what is connected to ge-4/0/18.  It somehow has the same IP address as wdqs1004 and is just sitting there.
If we can, we shut down that server.  If we cannot, we fix dns so its pointing correctly.
If wdqs1004 needs a new ip, update dns and reimage.

It seems the the main reason for all this complexity and indirection is that these used to be separate MediaWiki extensions where the extensions/ path specified for remoteExtPath had to vary between "Name-of-micro-extension", "Wikibase" and "Wikidata".

However, as far as I can tell it will only ever be "Wikibase", given T173818 has been resolved.

Questions:


Can all this be simplified to simple php files that return a static array with no preg_match complexity?
Can we merge them upwards so that we only have a handful of these files rather than a separate one for each file that used to be its own Git repo? At the very least it'd be nice to reduce from 62 files to less than 10, or even just 2? (One for Client, one for Repo). Note that this should not hinder future potential to publish these as separate npm packages, given that those packages will not need MediaWiki-PHP handling, and those publications can happen even a monorepo sub directory.

No, it's CC0 since it's Wikidata data. Facts as such are not
copyrightable, so the fact that the particular movie is set in NYC is
not subject to any license. Specific arrangement (collection) of facts
can be copyrighted and licensed though and this specific one is
Wikidata, which is licensed under CC0.

Federated data - https://query.wikidata.org/copyright.html, federated

Another option is that the query finishes successfully but then there's a timeout while delivering the response because response is too big. The server can return partial JSON in case of timeout. The HTTP status should be an error then, like 500, though. Not sure what the "cache" refers to here though. Hm, I guess that’s possible if the query times out while sending out results (in which case we already sent the HTTP status, so we can’t tell the cache that this is actually an error response). TASK DESCRIPTIONIt seems as if WDQS can return invalid JSON. In my Python script I can get:

simplejson.scanner.JSONDecodeError: Invalid control character u'\n' at: line 192512 column 34 (char 4700746)

I'd like to see caption length mirror file name uses cases (with the addition of being more mutable and multilingual). 255 characters seems good to me as a max length.



I think, for the summer launch, it may be most prudent to have the Caption as optional so it initially disrupts as little as possible. Then we would make it a required field later. There is, of course, an argument to be made for making it required from the beginning but that may be met with user resistance.



If captions fail, the bigger issue is capturing why they failed. Since this is an important feature I'd want to make every attempt to get it entered correctly, so a roll back/retry on failure is my preference.

I've actually been thinking about this recently.

MediaWiki is doing a subpar job with clickjacking in general. TASK DESCRIPTIONWith #structured-data-commons, it will become easier for GLAMs (cultural institutions - Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) to contribute media files to Wikimedia Commons, and to reap more benefits from their contributions there.

To test and initiate the new features of Structured Commons and their value for GLAMs, a series of GLAM pilot projects take place.

TASK DESCRIPTIONCultural institutions (GLAMs - Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) use their own ontologies, metadata standards/schemas, vocabularies and authority files to describe their collections in their own collection databases.

When GLAMs contribute media files to Wikimedia Commons, it is often difficult to correctly 'map' these metadata standards to the way that media files are described on Commons. (See also results and pain points obtained from T175188: Survey GLAM stakeholders in Commons structured data program.)

With #structured-data-commons, it will become technically easier to


Make these mappings in a consistent way, because metadata on Commons will be structured;
Develop tools that use these mappings (e.g. upload tools with which GLAMs can more easily and more directly upload media files from their own metadata schema to Commons; synchronization tools that provide feeds of extended and improved metadata from Wikimedia Commons in a format that is easily re-digestible by GLAMs).
