This should be made consistent, choosing a single capitalization scheme.  It seems that types like "Form", and "Lexeme" are currently being capitalized in the interface, maybe to highlight that ordinary words are being used in a jargon-y sense.  Is this intentional? Right now full lexeme dump is just 2.1M compressed, so adding it to main dump would not be a big deal for dump size. However, absent the separate dump, you'd have to always download the huge one, of course. cool that you've been looking into how to use Wikibase / Wikidata for
something like a retail products / firearms database. I could
definitely understand why you're considering that.

I suppose just using the vocabulary and writing your own software is
probably the best way to go. I don't have any experience running my
own Wikibase + Mediawiki instance, but i could imagine it might be a
bit overkill if all you want is a database of firearms with metadata.

Of course, what you could do is try to make integration with Wikidata
as easy as possible. There are a lot of items and properties that you
could reuse, like manufacturers, colours, specific types of guns that
all have a Q-number. If you link those up in your own database you
could, in theory, get all the hard work from the volunteers (like
translations and the like) without having to do the work yourself. The
API is very useful for something like that.

You could even provide your own API, and as long as you provide
permanent identifiers and a machine-readable format for your items,
data might even flow back to Wikidata.

We're in the process of formalizing our ideas from the Federated Wikibase Workshop in New York (which is running for about two more hours today), but generally this refers to literal references to Wikidata, e.g.:


WDQS's visible text and visual identity would not be coupled to Wikidata (e.g. 'Wikidata Query' might say 'Wikibase Query')
The codebase and URIs would not refer to Wikidata (e.g. a grep search would not return results for Wikidata)
While user-facing documentation currently refers to Wikidata, it would be nice to provide more generalized documentation in the future.

The Wikibase docker images currently use the default Wikibase configuration.
Wikidata.org is customized.
I don't think we want to switch the default in Wikibase, as it will stop Wikibase being immediately installable with Mediawiki, where the assumption lies that the main namespace is for wikitext.

re: your overall question here and in a few other tasks -- We re-used this whole "task tree" from the 2017 Wikimedia hackathon in at least two following hackathons, and it might have been useful to participants in all of them?  
I wonder if we should keep reusing the task tree (which gets messier as it grows, because it always includes the old resolved tasks) 
or if instead, we simply need to make a #Wikidata workboard search for tasks that are also #documentation , and make sure that we've properly tagged the individual tasks. Wow, I greatly appreciate you taking the time to write that very thorough
response!

Indeed inventaire.io looks very similar to what I'd like to do, and the
data model page you linked to is very explanatory and helpful - thank you!
I've been so torn because as you say, using Wikidata vocabulary seems like
the correct way to go, and I do really like Wikidata's editor (especially
being able to add a reference for every statement), however I'm not a PHP
developer nor do I have any experience administering Mediawiki software, so
it would be a very steep hill for me to climb to be able to customize
Wikibase to suit my needs. I may instead end up writing some ad-hoc
software while trying to conform to Wikidata vocabulary as you say, with a
view to making integration with a Wikibase instance easier for later on.

Also, I know I made it sound general in my initial email by saying I wanted
to catalog "retail products" but truth be told I'm actually only really
interested in a specific niche of products - firearms and related
accessories. Sorry if that was misleading but I thought being
overly-specific might be distracting from describing what I was trying to
do. In any case conforming to or integrating with a larger "Wikidata for
products" is still aligned with my interest so thank you for that info and
links.

You've given me a lot to pore over and ruminate on. I also see on your
Wikidata page you've authored some useful tools that I will have to check
out. Thanks again for taking the time; if I make anything useful I will
share.

After some experimenting I managed to add a bunch of keys to the ignore which are probably fine to ignore:

I have no doubt that this will have knock on effects in Abusefilter, probably reducing the run time by ~60%?

I think there is an improvement to be made in Wikibase\EntityContent::collectValues.
it currently has a hard coded list of keys to ignore:

		//XXX: $ignore contains knowledge about the Entity's internal representation.
		// This list should therefore rather be maintained in the Entity class.
		static $ignore = [
			'language',
			'site',
			'type',
		];

This should be provided by each entity type as they can be different.
For regular items and properties there are keys missing that should be added.
For lexeme etc there are other keys that possible need to be added / thought about that have no way of getting into that list.

Ignoring more keys here will result in less data for AbuseFilter to then run through which would increase performance...

It looks like generally the loading took around 2 seconds, EditFilterHookRunner took around 11 seconds and the actual saveEntity took 10 seconds.

I support the idea of experimenting a separate Wikibase instance for Wiktionaries texts.

Something not in CC0 so not in Wikidata, but integrating full text material such as definitions, examples and etymology, as there are finely written in Wiktionaries. All the part that are protected by copyright laws (or droit d'auteur or equivalent laws). Some people outside of the wikiverse want to reuse definitions and etymologies in prose (like website that compile dictionaries such as encyclopedie.fr) and there will be none in Wikidata (only glosses). This proposal of a separate instance will resolve this issue and participate to show the power of Wikibase for more than data.

It could be a support for Wiktionary and wiktionarians, when Wikidata is not yet a support to Wiktionaries but rather a separate project aiming other purposes for other customers. The kind of support Psychoslave mentioned in the first message is not something planed by Wikidata product team and both instances could be complementary. I know there is no Wiktionaries product manager, I am sad about that,  but if one exist now, it should be the person to which this proposal is directed.

Finally, I know for sure Wiktionaries data can be integrated in databases easily, as shown by GLAWI (for French) and Dbnary (for twelve languages). So, a separate instance under CC BY-SA could be filled without much investment of time and there will be voluntaries to do so, as it the material they made and care for years.

Personally I think having the comment in the SQL file itself will be enough, I don't think we need to add the comment to the actual table.

Hi @Lydia_Pintscher , I join your concern on not wasting valuable resources.

I would be happy to know how we could achieve the the exposed goals with the lexicographical data support available on Wikidata, including the very first point "allow to import definitions from Wiktionaries".

I hope we can agree that Wiktionaries communities and the work they achieved so far including the definition set they collectively created can also be considered as valuable resources that we shouldn't waste, do we all agree on that?

I would like that we leverage on this resources to make the best out of the synergy between the Wikibase technologies and Wiktionary communities and works. I was just editing some glosses for an unrelated task with this patch still checked out, and I found it to be a bit overly intrusive – the warning pops up too often while you’re entering a language code (because “e” is not a valid language code even though “en” is).

NOTE: we can only rewrite (or proxy) from the /entity/Q... path if we are //sure// that the target URL sill still trigger a redirect (or error). We should //never// return content from the /entity/ path, to avoid cache pollution and confusion about subject URI and document URL. So, /entity/Q1234.ttl must //not// be rewritten but //redirected// to /wiki/Special:EntityData/Q1234.ttl, since that will return data. All of the libraries are now in the libraries section of Special:Version.
That section does not link to any licence files any more.

I also check all of our extensions and the licence links all work except for https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Special:Version/License/WikibaseLexeme which I'll file a follow up ticket for now.
