Little remark, because in wikidata we cannot have the same label and 
description so if it exist label AAA without desctiption, you cannot only 
remove (BBB), from AAA (BBB) because it will be the same description and label 
like the existing item

@Bene, the developer of the tool will have an ability to control caching - by 
either forcing freshed data, or being ok with the stale data.  The real 
question is what is more likely - developer reading documentation to make sure 
they add "stale is ok" parameter, or developer seeing that their tool produces 
stale result and adding "stale is not ok" parameter.  I think developers are 
more likely to fix the second problem than to notice that their query is always 
forcing server to regenerate.

The gui we provide on query.wikidata.org should always return uncached data 
because it is used for testing and showcasing queries.

However, tool developers should care about caching and decide what cache 
duration is acceptable for their application.

While caching for hours is perhaps often sufficient, it might be frustrating 
for the developer of a tool that data is often outdated when they don't control 
the cache parameter correctly or at all. Therefore, I think that caching for 
hours per default is too much. A shorter caching period is more forgiving in 
such situations.

Users who need uncached data will always do an extra step (like adding an extra 
parameter to the query) to make sure it is not cached.  But if we make caching 
non-default, fewer developers will bother to check if is cached or not, either 
because they might be inexperienced, or because they simply assumed that the 
service is already being cached.

Unfortunately, we do not allow external queries in Wikidata Query Service for 
security reasons (it's basically open proxy).

The error message could use some improvement though, I'll make a separate 
ticket on it to fix it.

Another two uses I just had:

Someone entered a label and description using the wrong language code. I can 
remove them from the wrong code, but I need labelLister to add them to the 
right code.

Some sitelinks had been added some time ago. Usually a bot will add labels when 
that happens, but sometimes things seem to get skipped so I wanted to just add 
the labels myself, but I needed labelLister to do it.

I am working on a fix in https://github.com/wmde/DataTypes/pull/50 (working now 
on tests for this)

also discovered the DataTypesModuleTest is broken on master, and the tests are 
never run by travis nor by jenkins when testing the build.  So I need to fix 
that, as well.

We do this when creating a new item, but don't dare otherwise (in Wikibase 
client), because any label is better than none if there aren't any, yet we 
don't want to interfere with the community on Wikidata.

  when adding a statement with math data type (e.g. "defining formula"), I 
sometimes get an error about the property being deleted.
  
  "It is not possible to define a new value for a deleted property."
   
  for me, this happens only in Firefox in non-debug mode, but it happens for 
other people in other browsers and sometimes when logged in.

  This arrived as a suggestion from a Content Translation user, but thinking 
more deeply, maybe it should be built into Wikidata, and the wb.PageConnector 
library, which creates the connection, should also auto-add a label? Content 
Translation is not really unique.

I often want to do this, because Wikipedia articles will normally include the 
name in the original/native/local language(s) and I'd like to add those as 
labels too.

Related to what @Izno said, if you move a sitelink to another item, the item 
won't automatically have a label in the language. You can remove the label from 
the old item, but you can't add it to the new item.

I do find it rather strange that I can do pretty much anything independently of 
the UI language except for adding new terms. I'm not restricted in which 
sitelinks I can add, I'm not restricted in which monolingual text statements I 
can add and now I'm not even restricted in which labels I can see, edit or 
remove, but adding new labels? There's no obvious way to do that, the best 
option I have is a not very user friendly gadget that isn't enabled by default.

I'm not sure how we can accurately analyse how often it happens. We could 
figure out how many new labels were added using the labelLister gadget from the 
history, but that wouldn't tell us how many labels people wanted to add but 
didn't.

That's not for developers to do something about. If admins delete your pages, 
there probably is a reason for. Try discussing with the admins about the

On this topic, it is pretty misleading, and we do have other stats we look at 
more-manually to compare.  We don't have a good singular, simple replacement 
for cache_status to include in analytics yet, though.  What we do have (that 
we've looked at manually in some cases lately) is the `X-Cache` response 
header.  That header has evolved a bit in how it's generated over the past 
couple of months so that it's less-misleading than it was before, but it still 
requires various regex operations to bin responses according to what exactly 
one is trying to measure.  But for an example, this pseudo-code would be an 
accurate way to put all requests into 3 distinct non-overlapping bins based on 
X-Cache regex:

  if (X-Cache ~ / hit/) {
  print "This is a real cache object hit";
  }
  else if (X-Cache ~ / int/) {
  print "This response was generated internally by varnish (e.g. 301 
redirect for HTTPS, desktop->mobile redirect on UA detect, some kinds of error 
response, etc)";
  }
  else {
  print "This is a cache miss or a cache pass (pass would be due to 
uncacheable content, which is more-often true for loggedin users than others, 
but exists in both cases in notable numbers)";
  }

However, I think X-Cache's raw data is still open to further modification.  
Ideally we'll build on top of this and start emitting some standard, simple 
header that can be one of N simple strings and reflects overall cache status 
bins (and hopefully with better detail as to miss-vs-pass and the nature of the 
pass to some degree).
