  Okay, but after 50 repeats of the code from earlier 
 (i.e. 100 items, 50 
merges), I still haven’t been able to reproduce the issue locally once. So now 
I’m back to thinking that the issue doesn’t happen with `wbmergeitems` alone, 
but is related to the combination of API requests the merge gadget makes.
  
  But if it doesn’t happen very often, then trying to find enough merge pairs 
on real Wikidata to test this with might be challenging – porting the merge 
gadget code  to work 
on a local wiki might be more promising.

  Managed to find a pair of duplicates via the recent changes tagged as 
sitelink change from connected wiki 

 (the dewiki and ptwiki articles were clearly translations of one another, with 
a left parenthesis missing in the same place in both) and merged them 

 using the merge gadget. I was //not// able to reproduce the issue.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  To update the dependencies run
  
$ npm update
  
  and make sure that all checks still pass.
  
  Then have a look at the output of
  
$ npm outdated
  
  and see if any other dependencies need a manual update of their major 
version. Note that this might show some dependencies, for example wikit, where 
we are using a version newer than the latest version and can thus not update 
that dependency.
  
  Then update the dependencies that can be done by adjusting their version 
number in `package.json` and running `npm install`.
  
  If there are issues, create a subtask.
  In case there are open dependabot PRs then either merge them or close them or 
create a task if they need more work.
  
  This needs to be done for the following repositories:

  I think 301s are the best way forward for this. Redirects can be more 
cumbersome to maintain, and HTTP redirects also alert the user to the current 
actual state of things.

  Reposting from a Slack discussion, it appears as though statsd is still the 
preferred way to gather some metrics (as opposed to ephemeral jobs), is that 
correct @fgiunchedi? In that case, is it our responsibility to set up export of 
these into Prometheus with statsd exporter? Which data collection methods could 
be migrated to Prometheus otherwise? Is there a place where we can find a more 
detailed migration guideline from Graphite to Prometheus to instruct us in this 
process (apart from the small section in the wikitech Prometheus docs)?
  
  Otherwise, @Manuel, to further break down this task, in case it is indeed 
viable to migrate to Prometheus straight away, we should probably list all the 
metrics we gather for Grafana, to be able to assess for each metric the best 
way forward in terms of migration.

  I don’t see what the issue here is… if the item has no label in any of the 
listed languages, the label service falls back to the item ID. This is good and 
desirable. Whether an item has a label in a certain language or not is 
essentially arbitrary, so filtering out items that happen to have no label is 
not usually a good thing to do, in my opinion. (Unless you’re working with a 
maintenance query or are otherwise interested specifically in the existence of 
the label.)

  WordLevelDiff was last substantially changed in 2016, so it predates the 
stable interface policy (created beginning of 2017). To me it seems plausible 
that marking it newable was simply not done yet, but there wouldn’t be any 
reasons not to do it either. (Alternatively, `TableDiffFormatter` is already 
newable and uses `WordLevelDiff`; we might be able to use `TableDiffFormatter`.)

  **Task Breakdown Notes**
  
  - If any subtasks are created, they should be created in the currently 
running sprint board, to be picked up there.
  - The classes might be involved in detecting merge conflicts, so we might 
need to tread carefully
  - We should probably try to work our way from `BasicDiffView` and 
`ItemDiffView` and see what we need to change along the line, but avoid 
touching the merge and conflict resolution functionalities. i.e. the way the 
diff is programmatically represented should probably not be touched.
  - We can use `WordLevelDiff` to try and achieve the acceptance criteria, but 
in case we need to extend or modify it, we should consider the MediaWiki Stable 
Interface Policy [TODO: Link to SIP]
  - Make sure to consider whether the core class `WordLevelDiff` is marked as 
"newable"

  **Understanding the topic Better**
  
  - Figure out where we use `WordLevelDiff`, but also consider alternative 
solutions to understand our way forward. [Create some investigative task]
  - The investigation should focus on `WordLevelDiff` and our possibilities to 
use it, or, if need be, modifying it, so we could use it.
  - It appears the Tech wishes is using it, so asking Adam or Svantje might be 
a good option.
