[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T48556: [Epic] Wikidata 3rd party client (Instant Wikidata)
Samwilson added a comment. @Lydia_Pintscher I'm not sure — I'm still experimenting. But so far it's pretty fun, and is working well for me: it provides a Lua function called `mw.ext.UnlinkedWikibase.getEntity( id )` which does what it sounds like. The main stuff that I'm still concerned about is caching and performance. I'm wondering if it'll be better to move the API calls to happen in the job queue, although that'll make the parse not be final, it will at least be faster. Although it might also not matter too much — it might be easier to just cache for 24 hours or something. I'm very much open to suggestions! You can have a play with it at https://freo.wiki if you like. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T254082: Gadget and external tools to copy genealogical information
Samwilson added a comment. I'm not a lawyer, but if we make a tool that enables en masse importing, wouldn't that get into the realm of database rights? I know that in the OpenStreetMap world, it's not enough to say that place names are not copyrightable, they still can't be imported into OSM. There's also usually terms of use that specify how data may be used. For example, the FamilySearch terms of use <https://www.familysearch.org/legal/terms> say: "You may not post content from this site on another website or on a computer network without our permission." But I'd be very happy to be proved wrong! I'm also wondering about tools that go in the other direction, and link Wikidata ''to'' other sites (e.g. adding {{wikidata}} templates to WikiTree profiles). That would have a benefit to Wikidata of making items more discoverable, and at the same time we'd add external site IDs to items. I think that, of the above, WeRelate is the only one with an open license (and it's not a very active project these days). Samwilson added a comment. I'm confused about what the desired coordinate system is meant to be: - the wiki page says that the top left corner is 1,1; - T108785 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T108785> says it's -1,-1; - and the image in T108785 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T108785> (F1346569 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/F1346569>) says -1,1. I suspect the latter is what it's supposed to be, given that is most normal (assuming it's not doing the web browser thing of the origin being at top left of the screen and the Y value going up as you go down the screen). I made a diagram for it: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WikidataPageBanner_coordinates,_portrait.svg It looks like the calculations are not being done correctly, at least for the top offset. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T285498: Wikidata: Investigate bibliographic bot
Samwilson added a comment. > A part which queries Wikidata for bare URLs. A Sparql query can do this, and perhaps we'd want to query based on missing reference properties, and not just alone Reference URLs (e.g. a URL and title might be set, but no author or published date). > A part which parses the citoid output and puts it back on the wiki. It's certainly be possible to do this, given the data returned by Citoid, but I'm wondering if this is reliable enough for an unsupervised process. For example, adding a reference while editing gives the user a change to check that the title, author, date etc. are correct and what they want, before they save the data. If a bot comes along later, finds a bare Reference URL, and fills in the missing data, there doesn't seem to be any process by which the user can easily confirm that it's correct. This feels like it might be a concern, but it didn't come up during the Wishlist Survey, so perhaps I'm misunderstanding things. It seems to me that the first thing is to find out if anyone else is working on the while-editing tool: there's a 'Manual' tab in the references section on Test Wikidata, which looks like it's meant to have an 'Automatic' section next to it... but I guess it's not functioning yet (the code <https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/g/mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase/+/ea35dd53bb0c8ffe384c2ea344b159233d47cb7d/view/resources/jquery/wikibase/jquery.wikibase.referenceview.js#104> looks like it's missing any other tab, and it doesn't look like `$wbRefTabsEnabled` is configurable)? Samwilson added a comment. I'm not sure I understand the concern about attribution: surely the same problem applies to any image in a wiki that's not got a link? And MediaWiki has had those forever. If Wikivoyage wants to always link to the banner image, they'd just have to //not// add `|link=` — and given they call `{{PAGEBANNER}}` in a protected template, it seems unlikely that it'd be added by accident. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T283212: Allow banner to be shown on Main Page
Samwilson created this task. Samwilson added a project: Wikidata-Page-Banner. Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper. TASK DESCRIPTION Currently, it's not possible to add a banner to the main page of a wiki. It would be useful on some wikis to be able to show a banner on the main page. Does this need a new configuration variable, e.g. `$wgWPBEnableMainPage`? I'm not sure of the background as to why banners are prevented on the main page. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T212211: Associate red links on Wikibase client wikis with items in the Wikibase repo
Samwilson added a comment. Just as another example of an existing template that provides this sort of functionality: the {{wdl}} <https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Template:Wikidata_link> (or 'wikidata link') template on English Wikisource takes a Wikidata ID and optional link-text, and links to the first-found: Wikisource, Wikipedia, Commons, or Reasonator. See it in action, for example, on Letter from T.H. Barker to his wife Mary, 12 December 1903 <https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Letter_from_T.H._Barker_to_his_wife_Mary,_12_December_1903>. I think the `{{wdl|Qxxx|Label text}}` is pretty succinct, and as easy as any other custom-purpose syntax. [Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Updated] T159104: Continue to increase the amount of Wikidata data in Wikisources
Samwilson added a comment. @MrSteff there's some current discussion about how to handle authors such as https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Author:Svayambhuva who have no birth and death dates, and whether https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P629 should ever have more than one value If you want to work on some Lua, https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Module:Edition is not functioning yet, and needs lots of work on things like displaying related work-level data from editions (however, this may be hard, as P629 sometimes currently does have more than one value).TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T159104EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: SamwilsonCc: MrSteff, Crang115, srishakatux, Aklapper, Samwilson, PurpleBasil, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, cmadeo, Puik, D3r1ck01, Envlh, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Tobias1984, jayvdb, Shizhao, Billinghurst, Mbch331, jayantanth, Jay8g, Krenair, fgiunchedi___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T127858: [Task] Add Noongar (nys) as a language which can be used for labels etc.
Samwilson added a comment. The way it's been explained to me (by people who speak Noongar) is that the dialects are more like regional accents, with some particular words and usages that are unique to themselves but are still quite often understood by the others. So I'm not sure they'd be called separate languages. However, I guess it'd be cool to have labels in Wikidata in all possible, so maybe it's best to add all seven: xgg – Goreng xrg – Minang (Mirnong) xbp – Bibbulman (Pipelman) wxw – Wardandi pnj – Pinjarup xwj – Wajuk (Whadjuk)TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T127858EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: SamwilsonCc: Lydia_Pintscher, jhsoby, GerardM, thiemowmde, Samwilson, Gnangarra, Pigsonthewing, Aklapper, StudiesWorld, D3r1ck01, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, aude, Mbch331___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs
