[WikiEducator] Working group: OER Policy Briefing

2009-05-29 Thread Wayne Mackintosh
Hi everyone,

Teresa over at the WE Teacher Collaboration Forum list (
http://groups.google.co.nz/group/wikieducator-teacher-collaboration-forum )
suggested that we should develop an OER Policy Briefing -- a concise
document to inform and assist policy makers with decisions relating to OER.
I find it hard to believe that no-one has tackled this yet -- but my
admittedly cursory search did not find any OER policy briefings :-(.

A couple of folk from the Teacher Collaboration Forum have put up their
hands to help out.

Apology for the cross posting. In the event that anyone on the main WE list
wants to help out on this important task --- please add your names on the
relevant wiki page. I've started adding a few thoughts and ideas over here:

http://wikieducator.org/OER_Brief_for_policy_makers

Cheers
Wayne

[WikiEducator] Re: Congratulations to WikiMedia Foundation on Licensing Changes

2009-05-29 Thread Wayne Mackintosh
Hi Kim,

Thanks for your note.

I'm optimistic and confident that this will lead to a higher level of
collaboration among free culture initiatives in the education sector --
hopefully wider than just WMF projects and the WE community :-). For
example, WE has submitted a funding proposal to Hewlett for content
interoperability between Connexions and Mediawiki installations.

Atkins, Brown and Hammond warn against success disaster where, for
instance, a teacher has access to hundreds of free courses in elementary
calculus. The OER movement needs to think about incentives to promote
access to fewer instances of the same course materials but offer more
flexible ways for communities to reuse and remix content, develop support
materials, customised activities etc. (

while recognising their unique community identity.

Each of the WMF, WE and Connexions communities have their own character,
unique strengths (and weaknesses) --- fostering interoperability and reuse
among these projects is a step in the right direction. (Think of the
different GNU/Linux distros each adding value in their own way.) The
licensing interoperability has removed a significant barrier in achieving
these goals :-)

Cheers
Wayne
