[WikiEducator] Re: Translations
Hi Kim, Thanks for your time and effort in setting up the language template -- All Java coders have the foundations to hack in other environments :-) From what I see the Language template requires the installation of the relevant language localisation? Or is it possible to set up sub pages, for example in the English WikiEducator for a language install which doesn't exist yet? mmm -- this is a great opportunity for two projects: 1) Developing a tutorial on how to use this feature 2) To institute a work group using our new draft policy for Workgroups to start working on a language policy for WE. See: http://wikieducator.org/Workgroup:WikiEducator_Workgroups/Guidelines We have a growing and active community of Wikieducators who are working on translations. There are also existing translations, for example for some of our training materials in Portuguese and French. We really need to think about multilingualism in WE. At which point do we install a localisation? Ideally when there is a critical mass of users -- but what is critical mass, etc. etc. Great initiative -- thanks for being bold! Cheers Wayne 2009/8/28 Kim Tucker kctuc...@gmail.com Hi all, Speaking of translations, I just set up a template which may be of interest: Example page: http://www.wikieducator.org/User:KTucker/My_Sandbox/Multilingual The template: http://wikieducator.org/Template:Languages K On Aug 23, 10:31 am, Phil Bartle cmpbar...@gmail.com wrote: Jesse, this is very helpful. Cheers Phil All you need to do is take the content ofhttp:// www.wikieducator.org/Template:ContentInfoBoxand have your volunteer translate it, then paste the translation into the page created by the red link found in your article. Does that explanation make sense? Don't worry about separating the actual template code from the instructions, just have the entire contents of the template edit box translated; you will need the instructions as well. I don't know where is a good place to answer your rants, Phil, so here it goes. It related to the idea of growth vs. conflict, which came up in recent discussion with Jatinder Singh Barhey about learning game development. Here is a quote: Jatinder: A person learns only in two circumstances: 1. When you really want to learn for yourself – Self Enlightenment 2. When you want to prove yourself – Competition I have tried to think of any third situation but never got convinced that there lies a third situation. So, believe it or not competition based learning is about 50% as responsible for learning in human beings as anything else. May be Competition is not the right word. Thiagi (one of the pioneers in game based learning) uses the word “Conflict” for the same. Maria: I would agree on the two learning circumstances. I think of them as Growth and Conflict, with competition belonging to the conflict category. Game mechanics can be based on Growth/Enlightenment, though people can ALWAYS switch categories personally and compete with themselves in situations set up for growth, or refuse to pay attention to the competition while playing competitive games. ~*~*~*~*~* Phil, I see your gardening view of education as more peaceful and cooperative, whereas the industrial transfer models are more competitive and conflict-oriented. [WikiEducator] Re: rant
Both these views of learning are based on the assumption of individuals as autonomous entities rather than as integral parts of a (learning) ecology: enlightenment of the self (to compete with one’s previous individual self) or competition with others (to reposition the self vis-à-vis other individual selves). I don’t buy either. A more positive view of learning recognizes its quality as a lifelong disposition to become better and better at interacting constructively with one’s environment, i.e. to become a better integrated part of the whole, a more harmonious part of the universe. [WikiEducator] Re: Style guidelines draft policy update
Hiya, For those who don't know, Canadian spelling is distinct from both American and British spelling (and no, British spelling is *not* what is taught in Canadian schools). For example, Canadian spelling adopts British spelling in some cases: - colour - honour - flavour - metre - litre - lable but American spelling in others - tire - curb - airplane - emphasize - jail As you can see, there is a logic in Canadian spelling. It preserves the subtlties of the English language (eg., the distinction betweek 'o' and 'ou', or the distinction between 're' and 'er') but generally dispenses with some of the offbeat letter combinations that populate English spelling (gaol, kerb, tyre, aero...). Hi Stephen, That's very interesting -- Given my short stay in Canada, I often wondered about the spelling of tire compared to colour. I also wondered why Canada is one of very few Commonwealth countries that drive on the right side of the road ;-) That said, I think you're starting a tradition -- I see Samoa is shifting from the left to the right pretty soon.
