This is great. I look forward to following this project. Gira Mathur On Aug 9, 2015 7:32 AM, Declan declanjmcc...@gmail.com wrote: an interactive resource for identification! Saludos, -- luismiguel (@lmorillas) 2015-08-08 3:45 GMT+02:00 Declan declan...@gmail.com: Hi folks I have put some aquatic insect resources online in WE and I'm considering a new one. The idea is an aquatic invertebrate key...point and click with lots of photographs. All traditional identification keys essentially work the same way...paired questions that walk you through the identification process. But imbedded in this process, and ignored in a paper key, there is some binary logic. Each insect either has or has not got each of several characteristics. I think my first draft will be similar to the traditional, time honored key. ButI think that I can make the process more efficient by building some mug shot pages. The idea will be to have panels of 4 images and have users click on the best match. Most people can tell if they have a snail, an insect, a worm, or an arachnid. My thinking is that 4 pictorial choices could rapidly take a person through the process and reduce some frustration for beginners. Also built into all organism classifications we have nested groups. Several species within each genus; some genera within each family.etc. I wonder if I need to build that into file structure? Or would that be better handled using Wiki categories and sub categories? Any thoughts or suggestions before I begin? Cheers Declan -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups WikiEducator group. My reasoning for this suggestion is that the term Contents is easily understood by educators, generally, and also, Wikipedia uses Contents as its top category, offering good precedent for the choice (although most of the other Wikimedia projects use Category:Categories as their top level). If you are interested, you can access a short discussion from 2009 on alternatives. Please reply post with any thoughts on this suggestion. Hi Everyone, Big thanks to Patricia who has tallied up our tentative figures for our Learning4Content training activities for the period 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010. WE set an ambitious target to provide free wiki skills training opportunities to 1000 educators for this reporting period. Our tentative figures show that 1,181 educators registered for L4C training workshops for the period under review! To date, the Learning4Content project has provided free training to 4,182 teachers, lecturers and trainers around the world. Kudos goes to our dedicated team of workshop facilitators and volunteers who have worked tirelessly this year in helping WikiEducator achieve these targets. In no order of preference our special thanks goes to: Nellie Deutsch (Israel/Canada), Gladys Gahona (Mexico), Patricia Schlicht (Canada), Rob Kruhlak (Canada / New Zealand) , Githa Mathur (India), Ramesh Sharma (Guyana / India), Victor Mensah (Zambia) , Vincent Kizza (Uganda), Nicholas Kimolo (Kenya), Steve Foerster (USA / Dominica), Sanjay Pandagale (India), Vallery Taylor (USA), and Brian Sikute (Zambia) -- who have all contributed to our international L4C workshops this year. Thank you! I've had the privilege of co-facilitating with many of our trainers in different online workshops -- we have an amazing international team of talented individuals. WE hold the accolade of administering the world's largest initiative to build wiki skills in education. Notwithstanding our phenomenal achievements, it is a tragedy that in our connected world, two-thirds of all participants have never created a wiki account before joining WikiEducator. Can you imagine the social impact in the world if we can build capability among 1% of the world's educators to create OER the wiki way. We can transform the planet if we reach 10% of the world's educators :-). We are preparing to scale up our contribution in building capability for OER to support learning for development and you can help us. Spread the word among colleagues and friends to sign up for a free training workshop. Demand may exceed our current capacity to supply free training – but that's a great problem to have. We are planning to launch our next L4C reporting cycle with a bang! We have scheduled a special L4C workshop for July 21-August 4, 2010 --- this will be an opportunity to provide training opportunities for prospective facilitators so we can scale up our training team to reach more educators. Let's see if we can break our current record for signing up the most participants for a single L4C workshop. A health warning -- this is hosted on our beta-test server install in preparation for our upcoming migration to the Athabasca University installation :-). DO NOT spend copious hours editing pages on this site --- every time we update newer snapshots of the real WE database, the edits on the test servers will be erased. However -- we can't hold our excitement back and want to give WikiEducators a sneak preview of this exciting future. Also - don't complain if the server is down -- we're still testing, tweaking and getting things right. 1. Go to: http://we1.wikieducator.net/Main_Page 2. Login with your Wikieducator username and password 3. Select a page in the wiki for editing -- try your user page. 4. Click on the [Rich Editor] link which appears on top of the screen 5. Start having fun with a WYSIWYG editor. Note: - We will implement a more elegant solution for selecting the default editor (eg in user preferences) - We will implement the advancement of rich text editing in Phases (for example, currently editing templates is still not ideal for newbies. We will address this in Phase 2 of the implementation.) - There are still various features and services which are still not operational on the test servers -- these will be migrated before going live on the new install. Looking forward to hearing your feedback, thoughts and suggestions for moving forward. I think this is going to make a big difference to participation from educators around the world. We've waited a long time for this opportunity and its great to see WYSIWYG editing becoming a reality for WE. There's another workgroup a-brewin' down on the wiki! This one is about categories; yes, dreadful fun, I know. Before I talk about the workgroup, I'd like to introduce you to the concept, and the rationale behind their use. *What are categories?* A category is just what it sounds like: a method of grouping pages according to their content. Categories also work with parent-child connections in the same way that subpages do. The category you put a page in will actually be a subcategory of another. A category system will have many levels within it. Where the category system gets even more useful than the subpage system is in the number of relationships that can be defined by it. While a subpage can only have one parent page, any page or category can be in as many categories as we like. This is where the mediawiki software becomes genius in its use of virtual reality; even though there exists only one document, at a single url, it can be found and related to other documents in any number of ways. This creates a powerful browseability that is trumped only by the searchability of the SemanticWiki extension, which involves a steep learning curve. *Why categories?* The category system is a built-in method of organising content far better than the subpage system method. It creates relationships between content that cannot be defined by subpages, making it easier for members to move from page to page and between related information. Want to know what other projects there are on astrophysics? The category system will tell you that. Want to be able to find all the resources from Otago Poly-Tech easily? Curious about what 10 year old children are learning elsewhere in the world? The category system allows for these. Using the category system is preferred over contents pages because it requires far less effort from members to keep current. To add a page to a category, one never has to leave the page, itself! The other key factor for categorising pages is a concept called search engine optimisation (SEO). You may have heard of this if you are in any way involved with web publishing. I'm not going to explain SEO, but I will tell you the point of it is to increase readership organically (they come to us, we don't market directly to them). This is done by appealing to the formulas Google and other search engines use to determine who goes at the top of any search list. The thing is, if there aren't any links to your page, Google never sees it! Categories create a link-based map of the website, allowing Google's programs to see each page that has a category. *The workgroup* Sounds great, right? Well, WE's category structure is a bit out of shape at the moment. For example, about 30% of the categories used don't actually exist, yet; there are a handful of central/root/contents categories, none of which go deeper than a few

The OER Foundation has been awarded a grant of $200 000 to support strategic WikiEducator projects. This is a testament to our community's passion and commitment to collaborative models of OER creation and distribution. The WikiEducator community can stand proud and take a brief moment of reflection and celebrate what we have achieved! This is another significant milestone for the WikiEducator family and our wiki model of OER development. This generous funding support from the Hewlett foundation will enable us to: 1) Continue WikiEducator's work in hosting the world's largest wiki skills training project in the formal education sector. This grant will ensure that we can continue providing a minimum of one online Learning4Content workshop for the next 2 years. WikiEducator will continue to provide opportunities for educators around the world to acquire wiki skills for OER content development and collaboration. 2) Build a technology bridge for OER content interoperability between Connexions and the Mediawiki software platforms thus fostering further development and scalability of the OER ecosystem among projects which subscribe to the free cultural works definition. 3) Establish a national OER collaboration for the school sector in New Zealand with the view to developing resources and models that can be reused and remixed for other countries around the world. I would also like to congratulate our friends at the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) and their respective community projects. The Hewlett Foundation have also awarded the WMF a grant of $500,000 for general operating support of the largest free content initiative in the world. Congratulations to our free content partners at the WMF! This combined with the recent resolution of WMF projects to support the CC-BY-SA license is reason for celebration in the free culture movement --- particularly those projects which have remained true to licensing alternatives which meet the requirements of the free cultural works definition. I'm proud that the OER Foundation and WikiEducator have remained true to our core values modeling approaches for open philanthropy by developing all our funding proposals openly and transparently in the wiki. A special word of thanks to every WikiEducator who continues to demonstrate that the purpose of education is to share knowledge freely. Cheers 2009/4/22 Alison Snieckus alison.sniec...@gmail.com Declan, I've used the deletion system with success (it's working, from my perspective), but so far only for pages that I created but then didn't need. In my post earlier today about an image with no source info, I felt unsure about whether to just request its deletion or if there is some better way to handle it. Yes, we do need a system to handle the dead bodies so they don't pile up. And this one seems pretty simple to use. am reluctant to also be the person to delete the same file (perhaps a reasonable approach?). Agreed, deletions of other people's work should have an independent review before deleting. Guess my suggestion would be to create a few guidelines for when to suggest deletion of other people's work (lack of source info, likely copyright issue). Putting these directly on the category page works for me. Maybe add an explanation of the function on the wikieducator tutorials with link to category page. And I appreciate the other comments also. Regarding care with weeding etc, I have suggested criteria for immediate deletion: 1. Single-author pages requested by the author. 2. Multi-author pages where all authors agree, or where the content is largely blank. These criteria provide options for author-directed deletion. I'm not personally interested in policing copyright violations beyond my own student group; I suspect such violations are generally misunderstandings on the part of new users and I think the violations are fairly uncommon. I think a gentler approach will generally bring folks around without scaring them away. Personally I had used book covers on WE initially based on my interpretation of local (US) fair use law. Others gently pointed out that this is an international resource and applying a US standard is ill advised (let's not reopen that debate; I pulled the book covers). My point is that self policing leaves the power and ownership in the hands of the users. My intent is to provide a simple user-driven tool rather than something more top-down. Hi Declan and Patricia I also noted this many times during my F2F workshop and I think this is due to some mistake by a Newbie learning to upload Photos. I have replaced it with the following note. This will replace all photos of a person called Theo whose file has been renamed Example.jpg by some new learner by mistake.) WikiEducator is making history. WE have launched and implemented (to the best of my knowledge) the largest wiki training project for educators in the world! 2360 participants have registered for 73 L4C workshops since January 2008. If you do the mental math this averages out at 1.14 workshops per week! WE have launched 23 Online workshops and 50 Face-to-face workshops in 30 different countries, including: Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Canada, Cameroon, Israel, India, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Kenya, Kingdom of Tonga, Lesotho, Malaysia, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Saint Kitts Nevis, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda and Zambia. On a personal note -- I concede that I did have a few sleepless nights wondering whether we would be able to achieve our ambitious target of 2500 educators by the end of round 1 of the funding for this project ;-). How could I doubt the open community model? WE have now achieved 94% of our target of 2500 educators. WE still have a few workshops to go before 30 June 2009 under round 1 of the L4C project. Please invite your friends and colleagues to sign up for one of the remaining online L4C workshops: http://www.wikieducator.org/Learning4Content/Registration Spread the word at your organisations, post invitations on your discussion lists and your blogs. Let's show the world how we can exceed our targets. A BIG thank you to the WikiEducator community and all the amazing L4C facilitators around the world who have turned this dream into reality. When we started L4C, there were only 3 facilitators. Our list of L4C facilitators is now nearing 30 with many L4C graduates becoming trainers in their own right. You've got to love the scalability of the open model :-). I'm working on a funding proposal to continue with work with L4C capacity building around the world. I'm also seeking to secure funding to assist with the development and implementation of an L4C Intermediate level course. Given the overwhelming success of L4C -- I'm confident that we will find additional funding to widen access to capacity building in OER using the wiki model. Watch this space :-). Hi Wayne I am not skilled at website design but have many ideas on how the Main page should look and what it can contain. I would be happy to give my inputs volunteer to be on the Editorial board. Some suggestions are: * All the sections should be regularly changed, one team of two should be responsible for each section (like we have for UPE). *Two main new sections are needed, one Newbie Support and another to encourage members to get into more than what they learn at L4C workshops. Regularly a new idea can be put on main page everyone encouraged to try it out. Will add more on hearing from you if my line of thinking is meaningful. I think it is important to create a home page that provides updates on the processes and decisions, provides directions on how to do things (a summary of findings) and things that can be added to which lead to improvements, WE news, course offerings including courses that are offered in the community which were developed on the Wiki etc., featured institutions (and institutions for instance having hosted L4C workshops, could be featured, showing what they have made of the initial trainings, such as Kenya Institute of Education. These are just off the top of my head thoughts. Hi everyone Open questions: 1) Should WE redesign its homepage and important landing pages? 2) Will improved information design of the WE main page and important landing pages improve retention? 3) Should WE form a working group to consider proposals for Website redesign? 4) If so -- do we have any volunteers who will put their hands up in thinking about redesigning the website? (Especially folk who have good experience in this area -- but everyone is most welcome to give a hand). A little background info Website referrals and direct traffic account for 26% of our total visits with search engine referrals making up the balance. On average visitors to WE view 3.62 pages per visit. What's interesting is that our home page makes up only 3% of our total page views -- suggesting that folk do find specific content pages in the wiki. Other top ranked pages, include, for instance: * The recent changes pagehttp://www.wikieducator.org/Special:RecentChanges * The Content page which lists content projectshttp://www.wikieducator.org/Content * The India national page nodehttp://www.wikieducator.org/India * The Iniatives page which lists projects in the wikihttp://www.wikieducator.org/Initiatives * The Otago Polytechnic sales and marketing course pagehttp://www.wikieducator.org/Sales_and_Marketing * The eXe online manualhttp://www.wikieducator.org/Online_manual * A lesson on Forms of Energy developed by the HOD of Technology Education, University of Education, Winneba in Ghanahttp://www.wikieducator.org/Lesson_1:_Forms_of_Energy_and_Energy_Transfo rmations It's risky to postulate definitive conclusions based on these stats but I guess its reasonable to say: 1. Educators are interested in monitoring and observing changes in the wiki 2. Important landing pages include content listings, WE initiatives/projects and national project nodes 3. Individual content projects in WE do attract significant traffic. What does this mean for the information design of our site? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups WikiEducator group. We are required to categorize the images to encourage reuse of existing images. If there is no such facility to an easy look through the available picture galleries members may upload afresh all the images required for their projects. Therefore a well structured category system will save our server space also. So Glady's suggestion has been implemented! Now we have Images Category [[Category:Images]] I also created a Sub Category for computer pictures [[Category:Computer]] to add computer related pictures and enlisted 25 pictures through a random search. Now the community together may announce a Image Categorization Project. Wherein all the community members may create appropriate sub-categories for images and search out relevant images and place the category tag. How? 1. First go tohttp://www.wikieducator.org/Category:Imagespageand see what categories are there. 2. If the category you want to make has not been already there create it. How? Search out a suitable image for your category. When you click the image/or link the image will open on a page. Then get the page on edit mode and place the tag [[Category:New Category Name]] here replace 'New Category Name' in the example above with your intended category name. Now save the page and you will see the new category in red link below the page. Click the red link and it will open in edit mode. Write a sentence about the category as guidance to others and Place the tag [[Category:Images]] to make your new category a sub category of the Category Images 3. Now search out more images suitable to your category and place your new category tags on the pages.
