[WikiEducator] Re: Google Docs download feature to Open Office; possible for Mediawiki?

2009-08-03 Thread john stampe
Randy, I think you miss understood my point. I agree one hundred percent with
the fact that a one-step solution is better than two steps. What I meant was IF
you are going to do it in two steps it would be better to export the Google
Docs file as ODT instead of MS Word. Because when you open MS Word in
OpenOffice it is actually doing a hidden third step, a conversion from MS Word
to ODT.

John

Hi John,

Thanks - I am aware of this.

As I have been converting docs for the Community Media space, I have found that
my old Pentium III computer cannot handle medium-size doc exports into
Mediawiki from Open Officemy Core2Duo laptop handles it no problem.

Trouble is, many folks (particularly in the developing world) may not have
access to this type of computing power. So, a 'one-step' would be preferable to
the 'two-step', in my view.

If there was an option to do it directly from Google Docs into Mediawiki

Does anyone have ideas about how to go about this - pitching to Google that

It would save lots of time BTW: I've noticed you tend to need a fair bit
of RAM to convert larger documents from Open Office directly into mediawiki
syntax, and if Google could do it for us, so much the better.

2009-07-28 Thread Randy Fisher
Hi Gita,

Thanks - I know about this...it works sort of OK for text, but when there's
tables and more complex heading structure, it doesn't work.

What does work, is a straight export to Mediawiki, and then a copy and
paste

 Hi Randy
I download Google Docs files to my Ubuntu desktop as .odt, then open the
file on my computer, select the contents, select-copy them the
directly paste in Edit mode on my userpage in WikiEducator. It simply
 works!

  Hi Everyone,

I've been using Google Docs to download MS Word documents straight
into Open Office. (There's a conversion feature that downloads docs

If there was an option to do it directly from Google Docs into
Mediawiki syntax, that would be great.

Does anyone have ideas about how to go about this - pitching to Google
that it's in their interest to do enable this functionality?

It would save lots of time BTW: I've noticed you tend to need a
fair bit of RAM to convert larger documents from Open Office directly
into mediawiki syntax, and if Google could do it for us, so much the
  better.

PS. I've documented the uploading process -
