Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] a peculiar problem with the "newly uploaded" condition

2019-09-24 Thread effe iets anders
Hi Jernej,

Based on what you describe, this is a complex issue indeed, and an
unfortunate intersection of circumstances. I don't think there is a perfect
solution.

I don't see a good reasoning to accept the new image unless somehow you can
argue that the newer version is better because of either metadata or
resolution. You could also check if they have a slightly different
angle/version that they maybe did not yet upload to Flickr. These are all
imperfect solutions though.

You could discuss among yourselves whether to accept these submissions
anyway in the national competition; you have some leeway there - but I
should warn you that most likely these images would not be accepted as
'new' in the international competition. The international jury has to stick
to their rules, I'm afraid, and I think the definition is pretty clear
here, however unfortunate this is for the photographer.

I'm sorry that I don't have a better solution.

Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] UNESCO promoting WLM and translating the participate page

2019-09-24 Thread john cummings
As I explained in my first message in August they will not promote it
without the translation.

One suggestion would be to have the languages the page is available in in
brackets after the name of the country (and links if the page is in more
than one language)

[Wiki Loves Monuments] a peculiar problem with the "newly uploaded" condition

2019-09-24 Thread Jernej Polajnar

Dear all,

we came across an interesting issue. Apparently, the Slovene campain
attracted an author whose freely licensed pictures were transferred from
Flickr almost a year ago by a long-time user. Naturally, I'd like to
keep the new pictures which were uploaded in good faith, so that the
author wouldn't be offended by deletions, and that the campaign results
would be better. You think that Commons admins could be persuaded to
delete the older instances instead?

Here's one example:

(old) and

(new). There's a couple more.

What do you think can be done?

Thanks,

Jernej

2019-09-24 Thread effe iets anders
Hi John,

I understand the request. Given the timing and that everyone is busy
organizing and the lack of response here, I don't expect that this will
happen in the next 24 hours. Based on past years, I get the impression it
takes you usually about a week to get in touch with UNESCO, so that would
put us already well beyond the deadline.

Hence my suggestion to just try with what we have. Having a landing page in
Russian but then all links to non-Russian pages could also be argued to be
somewhat misleading.

2019-09-24 Thread john cummings
Hi

Sorry if I've not explained myself properly

I've asked and they want this page
https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/participate/ to be available in the 6 UN
languages to be able promote it

It would promoted through the main UNESCO Twitter channel, U4H is not
currently happening

Hi John,

I'm guessing that it's better to get the ball rolling at the UNESCO side to
see if they want to promote either way. As always, I have included all the
language versions in the overview, and that is what contains most of the
information anyway. Or do you already have confirmation that they would be
happy to push it out given a specific set of changes?

Is Unite4Heritage actually still an active program btw? I see their twitter
is inactive since 2018.

Just a note to say I can ask UNESCO again to promote WLM, however I
got some pushback last year because the page to find your country is
 only
 available in English.

 https://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/participate/

It would make it much much more likely I can convince them again to
promote it if this page could be available in French, Spanish, Arabic,
 Chinese and Russian also.
