There are many projects in small languages. People want to develop
them, but are often not sure what should they do. Even something basic

Is there something like a task list for new projects?

Yes, a few heroes wrote

This can be useful too:

2012-07-31 Thread FT2
A bot that can be given a list of the important templates, or categories of
templates, would be good for starting a new project. Once articles exist,
at least some meaning comes through and it's more likely people will edit
them.

(Machine translations would be nice too, but realistically if a machine
translator exists for a language then we usually have a wiki for it. It
might still be useful for a whole new project - eg a new area of coverage
that is going to be set up in common languages. It might not be perfect but
some meaning will come through and it'll help, much like town/city/village
bot articles did.)

Overrated? Most wikis don't have any of those [allegedly]! :-)

To clarify this a bit in case it is unclear: Wikidata will not
centralize the templates themselves but only the data in the
templates. This data can then be localized.

2012-07-31 Thread Denny Vrandečić
Wikidata will still help with the task at hand, but it should be formulated as:

- Translate certain templates, like city templates etc., to the target language
- Provide labels to relevant items on Wikidata in the target language

Simplified this means the template

  ''City''
  Country: {{#getfromwikidata:country}}

would need to be translated in the target wiki to

  Stadt
  Land: {{#getfromwikidata:land}}

and the actual country would need a label in the target language in
Wikidata (i.e. Österreich for the item on Austria, etc.) and the
city the template is used needs to be linked to the respective
Wikidata item. This will help with starting Wikipedias quite a bit,
but there is no magic involved.

Cheers,
Denny

We're getting ready to run the next version of the Editor Survey, for
August 2012. This will be the third incarnation we've run since 2011. As
with the prior incarnations of the survey, we'll be looking at a variety of
topics, this time with the goal of not only understanding your needs and

editors' satisfaction with the work of the Foundation.

The last time we ran an editor survey, it was completed by over 6,000

demanded by the survey corresponds to 100 hours of Wikipedians' time. We
want to make sure that this time is spent wisely, ensuring that the

I know there has been some discussion about offering Office Hours in a

taught us all valuable lessons that we are applying in India and around the
world. There is an unprecedented level of activity happening in India with
promising programs that position the movement for continued growth.

[...]

CIS has committed to sustaining and building upon the work of the India
Program. They plan to hire the existing program consultants as staff and will
conduct a search for a new programme director. The program team will be based
in Delhi. CIS will be sharing their program plans shortly and will want to
 incorporate community feedback.

Barry,

This is all quite unexpected, but bringing in CIS does really seem
like a positive change at this moment for what has been happening in
India.

Through CIS, Sunil has so far extended great support to volunteers in
India, not only for those who were working as volunteers for Wikimedia
but also for volunteers from free software movement, people working on
freedom of expression and several other excellent causes. Having been
part of the founding team of the chapter in India, I did feel that
without Sunil's encouragement, support the chapter would have had more
trouble taking shape given the complexities. So, it does feel like a
good prospect going forward.

To be fair, the India programs has so far been an expensive project
coming at a huge cost and not so great outcome. The big loser has been
the chapter in India. Adding to that is the parity in work pressure as
compared to the remuneration between volunteers who signed up to take
up responsibilities at the chapter and the paid employees of the India
program. Although I resigned from the chapter early last year, I still
feel that much of the pressure has been on the few passionate
volunteers who have been trying to put together a solid foundation for
the chapter.

It is sad to see anyone go, but really does bring back memories when
certain people in-charge weren't responding or were just 'too busy' to
respond to calls from volunteers. However, that is past now and I'm no
longer as active on Wikimedia projects as I used to be. However,
there's still a sense of belonging that I'm pretty sure like me many
other volunteers from India (who may have now gone inactive for a
reason or the other) share - and are looking forward seeing the
brighter side.

[Wikimedia-l] Language committee report, July 2012

2012-07-31 Thread MF-Warburg
The Language Committee (Langcom) report for July 2012 was published. The
Langcom reports used to be published on this list too for some time, but
that has stopped and they were only put on Meta.
I would now like to resume putting the monthly report here.

See the wiki version on
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Language_committee/Reports/2012-07

===Committee===
*The Langcom has discussed to join the ''Alliance for Linguistic
Diversity'' of Google's Endangered languages project
http://www.endangeredlanguages.com . In the wish to act as a connection
between the Wikimedia community and the project, we have applied on 25
July, mentioning Wikimedia's significant resources related to preserving
languages, e.g. Wikisource, Wiktionary and Incubator.

===Requests and approvals===
*Following a question from one of the contributors, the status of the Oriya
Wikiquote[1] was discussed, but more activity and message translation work
is required there before approval can be considered.
*The request for a Wikipedia in Gorkha [2] has been withdrawn by the
proposer. It is also not eligible per our policies.
*Assamese Wikisource [3] (cf. last month's report) was brought up again:
Translations are now finished, but the activity is not high/steady enough
yet.
*The request to close Lojban Wiktionary [4] has been rejected.
*The request to close Basa Sunda Wikibooks [5] is currently undergoing
Board review and will probably be accepted.

===Other===
*It has been discussed whether it could be allowed to use another code for
the URL of the Wikipedia in Mapundungun [6] (test project [7]), for example
of the codes that is reserved for private use in the ISO 639-3 scheme (it
would e.g. be qmp.wikipedia.org instead of arn.wikipedia.org then); because
the ISO code arn derives from a word which is claimed to be seen as
offensive by the speakers of the language. No decision was taken, but
**Some members tended to accept such a thing, others tended to rule out
such a deviation from the ISO standard. The general importance of the
standard was highlighted.
**Most members would like organizations/speakers of the language to try to
get the ISO code changed first, but it was also noted that such a change
would be very unlikely to be accepted.
**The details of why/how the code is considered offensive by the speakers
were discussed. It is generally agreed that the code will not be changed
for political reasons. Currently, the president of Wikimedia Chile has been
contacted and will try to get statements from these NGOs and Universities.

Maybe.

People should be _extremely_ cautious when using bots to try to propagate
(new) wikis. Page-creation bots are a form of inorganic growth in a place (a
wiki) that demands organic growth.[1] Wikis must, by and large, evolve over
time naturally, otherwise the bots risk damaging the culture of the wiki or,
in rare cases, it's possible for these bots to kill the wiki entirely.[2]

This isn't to say that pulling in templates from other wikis can't be useful
(of course it can be [though remember to attribute your source!]), but if
mass page creation is done with a bot, it needs to be done with exceeding
caution and accompanied by a full assessment of the impact of these page
creations. The effects of these page creations is of course amplified on
smaller, more vulnerable wikis, though the caution to avoid mass page
creation largely applies equally to larger wikis as well. That is, 10,000
new and unused templates on a small Wikipedia that only has 400 articles is
terrible, but it's not as though the English Wikipedia or any other
established Wikipedia with millions of articles wants 10,000 unused
templates either.

MZMcBride

[1] Wikis have been previously compared to children. Creating a wiki is
like creating a baby, yes you should have a good reason to create one, but
if you don't for whatever reason, you should have an _extra_ good reason for
killing one, bawolff once infamously said. In this case, the inorganic
growth is analogous to cancer or anabolic steroid use.

[2] https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/BOTOVERUSE#History has most of the
history, though I could swear a project or two has been restarted due to
bots over-running the site. Does anyone have a citation for that?
