Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fwd: [Wikimediaindia-l] Tamil Wikipedia elects 10 sysops at a time

2019-04-25 Thread Vi to
Meh, sysops are a mean, not a goal. Bureaucrats even less.

On a wiki with just 302 active users according to mediawiki's loose
definition of activity this rings me the "bureaucracy explosion" bell.

Even with very low activity requirements I wonder how many administrative
tasks can be performed upon a 450 edits/day overall activity.

Yes, we – Swedish Wikipedia – have had similar experiences with annual
reelections (since 2006) helping us both to keep the bar at a reasonable
level and to have a de-sysoping process that doesn't cause of strife and
rifts in the community. Works well for us.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Supporting Wikinews [was: Reviewing our brand system for our 2030 goals]

2019-04-25 Thread Philippe Beaudette
The very smart Mr. Lih sayeth:

I have been a fan of the times Wikinews did original interviews with
notable folks [1] so this is perhaps a sustainable niche. But as a direct
news wire competitor to AP, Reuters or AFP, no.

[1]
https://en.m.wikinews.org/wiki/Shimon_Peres_discusses_the_future_of_Israel

Me too. In fact, I think this is something that Wikinews has always done
very well. It also strikes me as an excellent, and quite functional, use
for a Wiki. A wikivoices or wiki-interviews type project would be a fine
addition to the ecosystem, imho. And it is very reasonable to think that
given its success in this area, Wikinews could very easily pivot to fill
that spot.

But a news competitor to traditional news outlets? Nope, that it isn't.

Hi,

Tamil Wikipedia elects 10 sysops at a time after a gap of almost 5 years.

After 2013, we hit a policy deadlock where we couldn't agree on how to
elect a new sysop, what are the qualities of an ideal sysop, etc.,

Even after repeated attempts, we could not solve this as the fear of being
not able to easily desysop someone made us look for higher and higher bars
for a perfect admin.

So, how did we solve?

Recently, MediaWiki allows someone to get sysop access for limited periods
of time like 1 month, 3 months, etc., This is how Stewards grants adminship
in many small wikis.

We felt when there is the possibility of granting adminships for trial
periods and renew them thereafter, we don't need to keep the bar for
adminship very high.

We also proposed to start a Wiki Admin School where others can mentor the
new admins.

So, after a month long discussion and community consensus, we conducted our
sysop elections and elected 10 sysops at a time.

Right now, we have 42 sysops with one of the highest sysops per users
ration among all global Wikis.

We plan to elect 6 new sysops every quarter and are discussing a similar
policy for bureaucrat election.

We strongly believe having a diverse pool of sysops makes them feel
empowered to serve the Wikimedia movement for a long period of time.

If you are interested in knowing more, take a look at the policy here
and the discussion in the related talk
page.

Thanks,

Ravi

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing 1Lib1Ref (1Bib1Ref) in May 2019!

2019-04-25 Thread Jake Orlowitz
Librarians and library lovers,

Next month from May 15th to June 5th we will be joining together around the
world to make Wikipedia more reliable. You can participate in #1Lib1Ref by
simply adding a citation to Wikipedia's content.

That's all we ask and imagine: a world in which every librarian (or
archivist, reference professional, and scholar) adds 1 more reference to
Wikipedia.

This is the fourth year of the #1Lib1Ref campaign and our second time
running it in May, when it's more convenient for the southern hemisphere.
You can learn about this year's January campaign too in our recently
released learnings report.

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Lessons/2019

Full resources and guides for participating in May are available on the
http://1lib1ref.org campaign website.

The campaign will be fully tracked with daily metrics and leaderboard
updates. You can make sure your contribution is counted by using the
Program and Events Dashboard for your event, institution, or region.

Login to start a new event or join up with an existing group for the May
Campaign here:

Please tell your library and library-loving friends about #1Lib1Ref in
May. We need everyone's help to make Wikipedia more reliable!

Sincerely,

Korea coming to fruition.

Thank you to AffCom and the BoT, and let's hope this is not the last new

I don;t think "discard" is right. The message would be "... but if it
doesn't work out then we won't continue to waste your time and effort and
our donations indefinitely". That's realistic.
