[Wikimedia-l] Introducing Diff – a blog by and for the Wikimedia volunteer community

2020-07-15 Thread Chris Koerner
Hello,

Today the Wikimedia Foundation would like to introduce a new community
blog. It's called "Diff" (diff.wikimedia.org) and is a blog by – and
for – the Wikimedia volunteer community to connect and share
learnings, stories, and ideas from across our movement. We'd like to
encourage you to learn more about Diff and how it can help you in
sharing and learning from your fellow Wikimedians.

Everyone is invited to contribute!

https://diff.wikimedia.org/2020/07/14/welcome-to-diff-a-community-blog-for-the-wikimedia-movement/

The name “Diff” is in reference to the wiki interface that displays
the difference between one version and another of a Wikipedia page. It
also reflects the “difference” our communities and movement make in
the world every day.

For some background, Diff builds on lessons and experiences from the
Wikimedia Blog, the Wikimedia Foundation News, and Wikimedia Space;
previous posts from these channels are archived on Diff. The channel
is primarily intended for community-authored posts, in which
volunteers can share their stories, learnings, and ideas with each
other.

Diff offers a simple and accessible editorial process, moderated by
Foundation communications staff and open to volunteers, to encourage
participation from all — especially emerging and under-represented
communities. Additionally, content on Diff can be written and
translated into languages to reach a wide audience. Diff also has a
code of conduct and comments can be flagged and moderated.

Still curious to learn more?

[Wikimedia-l] 2020 Community Spotlight Survey

2020-05-30 Thread Chris Koerner
Hello Wikimedians around the world

In these difficult times many of us miss the chance to connect in person
with other Wikimedians. We miss the events and meetings where we could
learn from and about each other. So we thought to use this time to learn
from each other more about the great people that make up our communities.
We would like to give some of them a bit of a spotlight in our virtual
spaces like our blogs and social media in the absence of physical
connection points.

Do you know a community member who has accomplished something new or
inspiring in the last year? Someone who you think the rest of the community
should know about? If so, please take a few minutes and nominate them in
the survey below.

Let us know about their inspiring work, whatever form it took, online or
offline. This can include but is not limited to adding important content
directly to one of our projects, encouraging and supporting others in
adding content, teaching the public about Wikipedia or other Wikimedia
projects, building partnerships, or organizing events and helping your
local community thrive. We are also curious to learn about the different
ways people enrich our movement!

Use the following link to take the survey.

Thank you in advance for helping us highlight more wonderful people and
accomplishments from all over the world!

Your privacy is important to us and is governed by the linked privacy
statement. In this survey, we will request your contact information and
that of the individual you are nominating. Please be sure that the person
you are nominating understands you are providing us with their information.
We will use this information to get in touch with nominees, should they
meet our selection criteria. We will retain this contact information

[Wikimedia-l] New Wikimedia password policy and requirements

2018-12-06 Thread Chris Koerner
The Wikimedia Foundation security team is implementing a new password
policy and requirements. [0] You can learn more about the project on
MediaWiki.org. [1]

These new requirements will apply to new accounts and privileged
accounts. New accounts will be required to create a password with a
minimum length of 8 characters. Privileged accounts will be prompted
to update their password to one that is at least 10 characters in
length.

These changes are planned to be in effect on December 13th. If you

Re: [Wikimedia-l] RFC on wikimedia-l posting limits

2018-02-09 Thread Chris Koerner
Hey Fae,
Let me make sure I understand.

*You believe suggesting posting limits resulted in less posts because
people were afraid of the post limits
*This makes you feel doubt about the health of the mailing list
*The count of posts is low year-over-year for the last few years
*This is indicative of community health
*You feel the content of the list is low on substantive conversation
*You would like feedback on these ideas.

Correlation does not equal causation, so I think it’s not as clear (or
black and white) as I interpret your writing on why we've seen less
participation. Nor do I find any lack of quality in the conversations
that do happen here.

Of course, who's to say that those past years and corresponding
numbers are indicative of a healthy community? :) I remember this
mailing list to have a great number more posts in early 2016, but many
remember that period of time as not such a healthy time for the
movement. If the goal is more posts at the cost of more drama - I'll
take a hard pass.

Do you feel that the mailing list content is less healthy or perhaps
just less noisy? Noisy in the sense of distractions. You mention
criticism and thoughtful conversation. Is it possible that is
happening in other more friendly (technologically accessible and
civil) venues? Perhaps one where familiar usernames are not given such
court to create more distraction?

As for the usefulness of this mailing list I can only speak for
myself. I work remotely. I have conditioned into me from previous
experiences not to send frivolous single-sentence replies. However in
my experience within the movement, these sort of of “hey I acknowledge
you exist, saw your message, but have nothing to add” messages are
helpful for remaining connected to colleagues who are physically
distant, but frequently encountered (and sometimes sadly not) in
online spaces. It’s part of the reason I find the Thanks extension
helpful on-wiki. So that is to say, this is a hearty +1 to the current
state of things. In my opinion, I'm fine. We're fine.

I hope this is a somewhat thoughtful observation and not too spammy. :)

Thanks,
Chris K.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] September 28: Strategy update - Final draft of movement direction and endorsement process (#25)

2017-10-03 Thread Chris Koerner
Hey Yuri,
IMHO, this section is the closest thing (thus far) to an 'elevator pitch'
for the direction of the movement:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Direction#Our_strategic_direction:_Service_and_Equity

You could probably even knock it down to "The Wikimedia movement serves
open knowledge to the world across interfaces and communities. We break
down the social, political, and technical barriers preventing people from
accessing and contributing to free knowledge."

Anything that short is sure to lose the nuance in the longer document
(which I'm sure we've all read!), but it might be a little closer to what
you're looking for. Adapt as necessary.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] RFC on wikimedia-l posting limits

2017-08-24 Thread Chris Koerner
Hey Fæ,
Considering your proposal, on one hand I'm not sure using Wikimedia
resources to create Yet Another Forum for discussion would provide any
benefit to the movement. We're fractured enough as it is. Especially
given that this proposal is to make a more inviting atmosphere for
_all_ participants, not create a smaller (frequency, participation)
space to shunt folks into.

On the other hand if a subset of folks need a release valve, and would
use a more appropriate place to discuss than this (IMHO, the
main/primary movement list), then I'm all for that.

A small aside, while "alt" has a long tradition in meaning
"alternative" like alternative rock, [0] my personal history (as a BBS
user) has established its meaning as "Anarchists, Lunatics, and
Terrorists’.” (that's an old BBS joke, by the way). [1]

Less of a joke is the obvious contemporary meaning of the alt- prefix,
which, ugh, I don't think anyone wants to have folks inadvertently
associate our projects with. [2] Naming stuff is hard, but I would
avoid that prefix at the moment. Heck, I have enough difficulty
explaining to friends and family that I don't work on that other leaky
"wiki" project. :p

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fwd: [discovery] Interactive Team putting work on pause

2017-01-25 Thread Chris Koerner
Today marks my 1 year anniversary with the WMF. What a ride it's been!

A little clarification, or a timeline if you will.

Work on Interactive was led by very energetic and talented technical folks
for a good chunk of time with out a lot structure around the work. Then,
about a quarter ago, the team tried to start with more planning - a
roadmap, team roles, checklists for deployment - the usual stuff. It didn't
go well. The structure was too burdensome for some team members and lacking
for others. It caused a bit of stress to all members of the team, myself
included. But, to be good stewards of our resources we need some structure.

Lacking that structure it was decided to put a pause on things, rethink the
approach, and figure out how this all fits into planning and strategy for
the comping months/years. In the middle of this was the holiday, dev summit
and WMF all-hands (a solid week away from the office for the WMF), then
Yuri's departure, and Katie's scheduled (and deserved) vacation. Looking
back at it, a mess of bad timing.

So, Dan posted the message on discovery-l. I can't speak for him, but my
interpretation was, "Hey, just a head's up. We're going to pause things
while we work some stuff out and we'll let you know more in the future". An
honest attempt to do what so many of us ask for - quick communication in
the open. Personal note, I really didn't expect so many people would
care/notice! I'm happy to see that I was wrong.

It's hard to talk about these things. It's a sign of vulnerability to do so
and this information puts you at risk for criticism and embarrassment
(deserved or otherwise!). We're professionals, we never make mistakes,
right? Nope. We do, and it's hard to talk about. It's also hard with
professional and legal reasons when talking about individual staff. Heck,
even writing this reply I'm worried I'm going to say something wrong. :)

Now a few of the folks in Discovery are coming up with a plan, to be
discussed with our director upon their return from vacation. I personally
believe it would be wrong to make a decision without their involvement. I,
like many of you, personally hope we figure out a good way to keep the work
the interactive team has done moving forward. Once we have a plan, we'll
let you all know.

At this point I feel like I'm repeating what others have already said. :) I
don't expect this will put all minds at ease, but I too ask for your
patience and assume good faith.

I’ve always respected Derk-Jan's perspective and thoughts in the community.
I appreciate his concerns and I hope he continues bring them forth.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Discussion about proposed Technical Code of Conduct (TCC)

I'm speaking as a volunteer, not as WMF staff, if that matters to you.

That's what a Code of Conduct is. :)

It would be wonderful if it were as easy as you describe, but it hasn't
proven to be.

It's taking longer because the WMF/Board did not initially take the
approach of applying this 'top-down' style to the technical spaces. Those of
us who have been involved (some, like myself before we became staff) want
to do it with community involvement and with thoughtful discussion. Are we
going to get it right the first time around? No, maybe not. Are we trying
to design something with thoughtfulness and flexibility? Yes.

MZMcBride wrote:

One could also argue that a disregard for common sense is exactly what
permits individuals to violate our shared expectations of community
behavior.

[Wikimedia-l] How might interactive maps be used on Wikipedia?

2016-05-02 Thread Chris Koerner
Hello,

The Maps team at the Wikimedia Foundation is getting closer to make it
possible to add interactive maps <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Maps> to
Wikipedia. If you've ever used services like Google Maps or Mapquest you
may be familiar with interactive maps. We’d like to invite editors to have
a conversation on how these maps might be used within articles. We've put
together information on how these maps and their style works from a
technical perspective
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Maps/Conversation_about_interactive_map_use>
– where the data comes from, how maps are styled, how to add an interactive
map, and a few example use cases.

In particular we would like to focus the discussion around three key
questions (open discussion outside these questions is welcome too).

* What types of articles would use interactive maps?

* How do these articles differ in their requirements?

* Are there any classes of articles whose map styling requirement is
fundamentally in conflict with other article classes, thus requiring
multiple styles?

If you are interested, please visit
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Maps/Conversation_about_interactive_map_use
to learn more and get involved.

In light of this recent conversation I found this quote to be of interest.

"Wikipedia readers tend not to be bothered by the fundraising messages they
see on Wikipedia. Two-thirds (67%) say they don’t mind them, and a majority
(55%) say they are not annoyed by these messages. Roughly equal shares of
readers do (44%) and don’t (41%) pay attention to these messages, according
to their self-reports."

There's a great opportunity before us. If licensing and copyright are
complex, the Commons community should be the best at explaining these
concepts simply.

One of my favorite examples in this area is what 500px does to explain

can we.

[Wikimedia-l] MediaWiki User Survey
