Good to see such an abstract proposal to reach this point on the way
towards becoming a very real Wikimedia project!

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia content for in-flight entertainment?

2017-07-30 Thread Daniel Mietchen
Hi,

during long flights, I have often been wondering why there is no
Wikimedia option in in-flight entertainment systems. As I am normally
offline during flights and I normally don't think about in-flight
stuff while on the ground, I never actually asked around, so after a
long flight yesterday, here we go:
Do any of you know of attempts to explore the option(s) to get
Wikimedia content onto in-flight entertainment and similar systems?

Many of them already have educational content, but I am not aware of
anything openly licensed amidst those offerings. Have any of the Kiwix
team looked into this?

Also, many airlines/ ships/ trains and others offer WiFi for a fee -
has the Wikipedia Zero team ever looked into engaging with such
"providers"?

Thanks and cheers,

Daniel

[Wikimedia-l] Candidature for the European Commission Open Science Policy Platform

2016-03-19 Thread Daniel Mietchen
Dear all,

the European Commission is setting up an advisory group for its Open
Science Agenda:
https://ec.europa.eu/research/openscience/index.cfm?pg=open-science-policy-platform

This group - called 'Open Science Policy Platform' (OSPP) - has an
open call for candidates, and I am amongst those who have publicly
declared their interest in serving on this group.

Since many of my Open Science activities have a Wikimedia component, I
posted my candidacy at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Daniel_Mietchen/European_Commission_Open_Science_Policy_Platform
and would welcome endorsements from individuals and groups, especially
if you are active at the interface of Open Science with Wikimedia or
other open movements.

I also set up
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:European_Commission_Open_Science_Policy_Platform
in case others here would like to serve as candidates as well, which I
would welcome.

Thanks and cheers,

Daniel

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Input needed: Cooperation with zoos?

Hi Milos,

I agree with Nemo that finding an additional non-zoo partner would be
a good thing and that it's worth having a close look at the project
with Sofia Zoo, which he linked in his post. Perhaps you could ask the
applicants to review that project and to outline similarities and
differences to theirs? I am available to review their application.

Surely they have some studies on what's their compliance with EU standards
by now? Serbia is quite close to entering EU (if you forget Kosovo).

So, I am interested in prevalent opinion. What's more important to us:
free knowledge or not cooperating with an institution which likely has
issues with the treatment of animals -- the question is just about the
 level.

 That's definitely the biggest concern.

As for moral considerations, if you're unsure, outsource them: have a
partnership with the zoo only if you can find an animalist/environmentalist
association willing to join the effort. If you manage, you have an
achievement before even starting, i.e. an ally for future initiatives like
WikiLovesMonuments or education or whatever (examples made with Italian WWF
and Legambiente in mind; no idea of the situation in Serbia).

I have no idea about the Serbian ones or the rest of the world.

We've just completed a QR-project with a zoo in Hungary; it might be
 interesting for you.

Find the documentation (google translator needed as it is in
 Hungarian-only) here:
 http://hu.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikip%C3%A9dia%3AMiskolc-m%C5%B1hely%2FGLAM-ZOO

in short: 80 articles were (mostly significantly) improved plus 34 new
created (114 articles in total) and the same number of QR codes put out and
our cooperation won't stop here :)

If you're concerned about animal treatment, think about something else
then, for example botanical gardens :)

Also a QRpedia project, also recently completed, but not finished (as the
cooperation will continue beyond mainenance) with the country's largest and
most prestigeous botanical garden and also Hungarian-only documentation:
 http://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikip%C3%A9dia:N%C3%B6v%C3%A9nyek_m%C5%B1helye/V%C3%A1cr%C3%A1t%C3%B3t

Both were conducted by Wikipedia project groups thus both had a team of
 editors behind them.

There is ongoing Microgrants project in Wikimedia Serbia. In brief, we
asked people to give us ideas, so we could talk about them. There are
some interesting ideas and a number of not so relevant.

We've got the offer to cooperate with one of the zoos from Serbia. At
this moment of time, there is just their idea, nothing more precise.

Before I proceed with the application (give suggestion to WMRS Board),
I want your input. In reality, I don't know that any zoo is perfect in
relation to the treatment of animals. In reality, it's likely
impossible to check that, as well as animal rights are not that well
protected in Serbia like the case is in, let's say, in the most of EU
 countries.

So, I am interested in prevalent opinion. What's more important to us:
free knowledge or not cooperating with an institution which likely has
issues with the treatment of animals -- the question is just about the
 level.

I would like people to be able to subst that template (or have a big
button that does the same thing), and have some code draft a stub
article based on the statements in Wikidata, say:

X was a German painter born in [[Munich]] on
27 May 1801. He died in [[Berlin]] on 3
  March 1899

with formatted references, a reflist template, and a pre-populated
infobox. It would be delivered in preview state, allowing further
 editing before publication.

A suitably prominent warning would alert editors that they still bear
responsibility for ensuring that the subject is notable, and the
article fit for publication, according to local standards. A hidden
category and/or an edit tag would allow tracking.

Because of the complexity of this task, we could pilot it for one type
of subject (say, buildings, or people, or even a subset of one of
those) in one or two languages.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] About the concentration of resources in SF (it was: Communication plans for community engagement

2013-07-28 Thread Daniel Mietchen
I could imagine that certain types of bots, tools and gadgets would
benefit if handled and developed with support from a chapter.

For instance,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Citation_bot
is used widely but cannot be maintained by its original author.
It is currently being ported to Labs (
https://github.com/wrought/citation-bot )
to restore functionality, but due to ongoing developments in other
areas (e.g. citation templates), adaptations are necessary on an
ongoing basis. Who should do that? And what about feature requests?

Some bot owners manage to handle all this on their own, but having
support from a chapter for such things (on an opt-in basis) or for
feature requests from the wider community would probably be widely
appreciated.

individual exhibits or by making suggestions about the overall
concept.

Do you envision that collaboration to broaden a bit over time? For
instance, there does not seem to be any mention of Creative Commons on

Wikipedia articles spoken in Spanish, or they might have a sound
archive (or contacts to one), which could then be asked about
releasing materials under Wikimedia-compatible licenses.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] White House orders open access to federally sponsored research

2013-02-22 Thread Daniel Mietchen
The US and UK plans may be similar in how they affect Wikimedia
projects in that both make more research publications free to read,
but they differ in numerous details (e.g. on whether the publications
- and what versions thereof - should be freely available from the
publisher or from a repository)

In short, the White House directive means that about 19 US Federal
agencies will have to develop, within six months from today, policies
regarding read-access to publications about research they funded,
similar to the Public Access policy implemented by the National
Institutes of Health in 2008 (cf. http://publicaccess.nih.gov/ ). It
is not clear yet what this will mean in terms of reusability of
materials from such publications, as the document is rather silent on
licensing issues.

For further information on the directive, see the detailed comments by
Peter Suber, who puts it into the perspective of proposed similar US
legislation (which, if adopted, would have a more permanent effect),
introduced to Congress last week:

Subject: [Internal-l] Israeli Government to Release its images under a free
 license for public use
To: Local Chapters, board and officers coordination (closed subscription)
 interna...@lists.wikimedia.org

 Hi all,
I am very proud to announce that Wikimedia Israel just won one of its main
struggles. The Israeli government has announced[1] that all imaged in which
the state is the copyrights holder and that were uploaded to the
government's websites can be freely used with the following restrictions:
 1. The image will be attributed to the state of Israel (or the relevant
 office)
 2. The user cannot change the license (Share-alike)
 3. No derivative work.
 4. Each office will create a policy about commercial use (i.e., commercial
use is allowed, unless otherwise specified).

Wikimedia Israel has pushed for this change since 2010, when MK Meir
Sheetrit proposed an amendment for the Israeli copyright act. The chapter
pushed for the acceptance of this amendment by the Knesset (the Israeli
parliament). During this time, we were able to make a complete shift in the
paradigms employed by the government and government officials. From being
strong opposers to the bill, they become adopters of the changes, thus
 making the bill itself, redundant.

Now, a new struggle begins - Wikimedia Israel will work to remove the ND
clause from the decision, and will make sure that all government offices
publish their policy as required. Nonetheless, this is still a huge
achievement, the government has accepted the importance of free culture in
 modern world.

On a personal note, as the leader of this project, I wish to send my many
thanks to all of those who made this miracle happen. A special thanks is
due to the great people of the Israeli Internet society, the (just as
great) people of Creative commons Israel, Adv. Jonathan Klinger, Mathias
Schindler, the awsome volunteers of Wikimedia Israel and the editors of
Hebrew Wikipedia. If there's anyone I forgot by name - my apologies, I'm
still terribly excited of these news.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or send me a private
 email,
 Tomer Ashur
 Chairman
 Wikimedia Israel
