Hi everyone,

On behalf of the Sound Logo team of staff and community collaborators, it’s
my great pleasure to officially introduce the winning Wikimedia sound logo,
the sound of all human knowledge. *Read the full story on Diff and access

We invite you to listen and explore more sounds from the contest and to
visit the sound logo resource hub on Meta to learn more.

Thank you!

Whether we personally use smart audio devices or not, we see–and hear–them
everywhere. Preparing Wikimedia content for audio settings and most
importantly, doing it in a way that was true to our values and practices,
and at the same time fun, was not an easy endeavour. We needed a whole
orchestra. Many thanks to the screening team of volunteers, the selection
committee, the dynamic team of community liaisons, and you. We are grateful
to many of you who took part in on-wiki, virtual, or in-person
conversations, listened, shared, voted, or in any other way participated to
help bring us to where we are today. With your help, we were able to nurture
this initiative, bring it to life, and make it better than originally
conceived. You can read more about the journey of this project from a novel
concept to a global contest and a community vote on wiki and Diff.

Thank you, very well played.

Hi all,

A reminder that the sound logo vote
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Sound_Logo_Vote> is open until
December 19, 23:59 UTC, please play a part in choosing the sound of
Wikimedia.

It's been an informative two weeks. There were some glitches along the way
and not everyone found the voting process intuitive, yet nearly 2000 people
have taken part already. A huge thank you. We knew we would be learning
together at every step embarking on this novel project more than a year
ago, and especially in the past 10 months or so. Thanks to many of you who
contributed along the way, we are humbled and grateful by the support and
participation. Once the vote closes and the results have been cleaned up
and tallied, there needs to be legal reviews, contracting, and due
diligence before the winner is officially announced. We are aiming for late
February to April, 2023.

Once again, many thanks on behalf of the sound logo team.

Best regards,
Mehrdad

Thanks for the notes of appreciation shared here on this thread and
elsewhere. A great deal of community and staff effort has gone into
conceptualizing this contest and making it a reality, especially since May
of this year when we switched to a more active phase of the project
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/05/24/refining-a-global-contest-to-create-the-sound-of-wikimedia/>.
The
great participation in the votes so far is much appreciated. With further
thanks to your help and input, we were able to fix a few glitches and
oversights as well. We took the precedent of voting and the reliable Schulze
method <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schulze_method> from recent visual
logo contests for Abstract Wikipedia
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Abstract_Wikipedia/Wikifunctions_logo_concept>
and MediaWiki
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Proposal_for_changing_logo_of_MediaWiki,_2020/Round_2>
(you
can learn more on Diff
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/05/14/conceptualizing-a-new-logo-contest-based-on-existing-practices/>).

So, please have a listen or listen again, and help select the sound of
Wikimedia <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Sound_Logo_Vote>.

Hi everyone,

Voting <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Sound_Logo_Vote> in the
Wikimedia sound logo contest has started [1]. Crowds, pages turning, drums,
chimes, vocals, and the sound of keyboards typing. Wikimedia is alive with
sound, music, and everything in between. From December 6 to 19, 2022,
please play a part
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Sound_Logo_Vote> and help
identify the Sound of All Human Knowledge. Voting is open until 19
December, 23:59 UTC. Learn more on Diff

The sound logo team is grateful to everyone who participated in this global
contest. We received 3,235 submissions from 2,094 participants in 135
countries. We are incredibly grateful to the team of volunteer screeners
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/10/31/screening-3235-sound-submissions/>
and the selection committee

who, among others, helped to bring us to where we are today. It is now up
to Wikimedia to choose its sound logo.

Best wishes,

[Wikimedia-l] The Call is Out – the Wikimedia sound logo contest

2022-09-13 Thread Mehrdad Pourzaki
Hi everyone,

The Wikimedia sound logo contest has officially launched
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/09/13/the-call-is-out-wikimedia-sound-logo-contest-launches/>,
welcoming scores of submissions from around the world. From 13 September to
10 October, everyone, everywhere is invited to play a part in The Sound of
All Human Knowledge <https://soundlogo.wikimedia.org/>.

Please revisit your on-wiki space
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo> for a video
introduction to audio production, a collection of sounds to get you
inspired, the campaign toolkit to help vibrate the call through your
networks, free and open source tools, and frequently asked questions. And
earmark this, on 29 September, we will be having a drop-in clinic to help
your submissions along.

Many community members have provided us with valuable input and guidance
along the journey of this project – from an initial concept exploration to
the recent contest proposal. Thank you. With so much expertise in
international contests and visual logo searches in the movement, we are all
curious to learn how sound and audio production will play out in harmony
with our values, scaling up our projects for accessibility and audio
devices. Read more about it on Diff
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/03/15/you-cant-see-the-puzzle-globe-on-an-audio-speaker-a-sound-logo-for-wikimedia/>.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

On behalf of the sound logo project team,

Mehrdad

2022-06-29 Thread Mehrdad Pourzaki
Echoing others here, it's always such a pleasure to work with you and
collaborate. Your professionalism, care, and dedication are nothing short
of exemplary ... even at odd hours in the night. Thank you for going above
and beyond for your community and for our whole movement.

See you around and all the best in your studies. Terima kasih.

[Wikimedia-l] The sound logo contest proposal

2022-05-24 Thread Mehrdad Pourzaki
Hi everyone,

There is going to be a global contest
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo/Contest_proposal>
to create the sound of Wikimedia and we’d love to hear from you. Read all
about it on Diff
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/05/24/refining-a-global-contest-to-create-the-sound-of-wikimedia/>.

The sound logo contest organizing team
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo#Project_team> is
pleased to share a proposal with all of you so in a few months we can
launch an accessible and global contest together to address a growing need
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/03/15/you-cant-see-the-puzzle-globe-on-an-audio-speaker-a-sound-logo-for-wikimedia/>.
This proposal is based on the practice of visual logo contests
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/05/14/conceptualizing-a-new-logo-contest-based-on-existing-practices/>
in the movement and considers parameters for the new concept of sound logo
creation and audio production.

While reading this, you may already be thinking of different sounds – from
familiar ones going back a few decades (like Intel
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrKgwcu0pMA> and Windows
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrKgwcu0pMA>) to those that have more
recently become iconic (like TED
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZYbT7ONkeI> or Netflix
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GV3HUDMQ-F8>). What does trusted
information or open knowledge sound like to you? We have already
started a collection
of sounds and tools
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Sound_Logo/Sound_collaboration#Themes,_Ideas_and_Sounds>
to get you creating. Please help to expand it. Representing through sound
and creating a strong sound logo are not simple. We want to make sure there
is plenty of time to build momentum for people around the world to think of
concepts, capture them in real life or find them, and use accessible tools
to create and share them.

Your feedback is warmly welcomed and appreciated until June 10. So take
your time, read all about it, tell us what you think on the talk page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Communications/Sound_Logo> or by
email. We also invite you to join an upcoming conversation on Friday May 27
@13:00 UTC (on Zoom with live interpretation) and Tuesday May 31 @15:00 UTC
(on Jitsi). During these calls we will also unpack sound logos together and
introduce some basic audio mixing.

Thank you for your attention and looking forward to hearing from you,

Mehrdad
