[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland looking for a partner affiliate to organize the WikidataCon 2023

2022-06-20 Thread Léa Lacroix
--- TL;DR ---

Wikimedia Deutschland is looking for a partner organization to jointly
design and run the WikidataCon 2023. This organization should be recognized
legally in their country, be located in the Global South, have previous
experience with running events and have a Wikidata-enthusiastic community.
If your organization is interested, please reach out directly to Léa
Lacroix before July 31st.

Dear Wikimedians,

As you may know, the last edition of the WikidataCon in 2021
 was organized
jointly by Wikimedia Deutschland and Wiki Movimento Brasil. The result of
these intense 10 months of collaboration was an incredibly successful
online event with about 500 participants, more than 40% of which joined
from the Global South.

This partnership not only created an innovative event, hosting multiple
conversations about the future of Wikidata and reimagining it from the
margins, but also gave us the opportunity to examine our priorities and
points of views, to learn from each other’s experiences and to share
skills. You can find a summary of what we learned, tried and achieved in
our common documentation

.

We’re starting to work on the concept and planning of a new WikidataCon
event for 2023, and so we’re very eager to form a new partnership with a
new organization in the Wikimedia movement. Together we would design and
organize the event and bring new perspectives to this important gathering
for the international Wikidata community.

We have defined baseline criteria to help select our future partner, based
on our vision of WikidataCon:

   -

In order to broaden our perspectives and decenter from the existing
majority of Wikidata editors, we are looking for an organization located in
   the Global South;
   -

Those involved in co-organizing the conference should show a lot of
enthusiasm for Wikidata and have an existing connection to local
   communities involved in Wikidata-related activities;
   -

We are looking for a group of people with prior experience in organizing
events who are keen to experiment with new formats and design the future of
   Wikimedia events together;
   -

For administrative reasons, we can only partner up with a group legally
recognized as an organization in their country that is able to sign
contracts, issue invoices and receive funds from Germany.

This call for proposals will remain open until July 31st. If your
organization would like to apply, you need only to send me a private email
so we can start a conversation about your ideas and how this partnership
would work.

The selection of a partner will take place in August/September 2022. After
a public announcement, the collaboration between Wikimedia Deutschland and
this organization would run from October 2022 to November 2023. The event
itself would take place in a format to be later decided among the
organizers (online, onsite or hybrid) in October 2023.

Feel free to share this email with anyone who might be interested or on any
relevant channels.

I remain available for any questions, and I’m very excited to engage in
discussions with the many organizations of Wikidata enthusiasts in the
movement!

Best regards,

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland: general assembly and new Supervisory Board

2022-05-21 Thread Alice Wiegand
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

On Saturday, May 14th, Wikimedia Deutschland held its 27th General Assembly in
Berlin, the second in a hybrid format.

Our members elected a new Supervisory Board, which consists of 7 elected
members:

* Alice Wiegand (chair, re-elected, former deputy chair)
* Daniel Reisener (treasurer, re-elected)
* Nora Circosta
* Christina Dinar (re-elected)
* Jens Ohlig
* Valerie Mocker (re-elected)
* Kamran Salimi

Nora Circosa, Jens Ohlig and Kamran Salimi are new to the board, so please join
mein welcoming them!

I would like to wholeheartedly thank our departing chair Lukas Mezger and board
members Sabria David und Kilian Kluge for the outstanding work and their
commitment to Wikimedia over the past years.

Renate Duerr and Lenia Zinßer were elected as auditors. My gratitude to our
departing auditor Sabine Zepp.

The General Assembly voted to change our bylaws to introduce term limits for
the chair and the treasurer as well as to legally secure the operation and
decision making for two or more Executive directors. Our members also approved
changes in our travel expense policy, which is now better aligned with the
Wikimedia Affiliates Environmental Sustainability Covenant.[1] And the general
assembly approved changes to our strategy and formally approved of the board's
actions for the 2 year term and of the Executive Director's actions for 2021.

Another highlight of the day was the presentation, discussion, and adoption of
Wikimedia Deutschland’s new set of values[2] with diversity, equity, free and
open access, participation, respectful collaboration and sustainability being
our six core values. It is based on values that have been lived in the
association for years, as well as the latest developments in the Movement
Strategy of the global Wikimedia Movement. As an association, we are guided by
these values in our cooperation with the Wikimedia movement, communities,
partners and interested parties. By living these values in its daily work,
Wikimedia Deutschland promotes human rights in a digital world. All those who
share these values are welcome in our association.

The new board will reconvene shortly to get started and I am very much looking
forward to working together with the new team.

Kind regards,
Alice

Hi Lukas,Thanks for sharing this update. I'm curious about the following
change the group has made:Additionally, our members added a new rule concerning
appointed officers to ensure that at least one third of theboard is of non-male
or non-female gender.
Can you provide some background as to why this rule was introduced and how it
was negotiated?
Thanks and regards,Heather(Aotearoa New Zealand User Group)

I would like to wholeheartedly thank our departing elected board members
Harald Krichel, Peter Dewald, and Marcus Cyron, and our departing appointed
members Helene Hahn and Mirjam Stegherr for the great work and their

Sabine Zepp and Lenia Zinßer were elected as auditors. I would like to
express my gratitude to our departing auditors Daniel Baur, who has been
serving the association over so many years, and Lena Stammler.

The general assembly also changed our bylaws to allow for virtual board
meetings and remote board votes. Additionally, our members added a new rule

board is of non-male or non-female gender. The general assembly also
approved changes to our strategy and formally approved of the board’s and

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland general assembly: new board elected

2018-12-03 Thread Lukas Mezger
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

At our general assembly in Berlin this weekend, the members of Wikimedia
Deutschland elected a new supervisory board.

The new board consists of seven members:
* Lukas Mezger (re-elected, new chair)
* Daniel Reisener (treasurer)
* Sabria David (re-elected)
* Kilian Kluge
* Peter Dewald (had previously been co-opted to the board)
* Marcus Cyron
* Harald Krichel (re-elected)

The board convened for its first meeting on Sunday and named Sabria David
and Harald Krichel as deputy chairs. Daniel Reisener, Kilian Kluge
(User:Cirdan), and Marcus Cyron are new to the board, so please join me in
welcoming them.

I would like to wholeheartedly thank our former board members Kurt Jansson,
Sebastian Moleski, Johanna Niesyto, and Gabriele Theren for the great work
and their commitment to Wikimedia Deutschland in the past years. I
especially want to extend my thanks to Tim Moritz Hector, who has chaired
the board for the past five years.

At the general assembly, we also decided to have only one instead of two
formal assemblies per year, and amended our rules concerning membership
fees. Additionally, the members approved the annual plan for 2019 as well
as our first multi-year strategy, and we had an open debate on how
Wikimedia Deutschland should interact with democratically-elected parties
that do not align with our strategic goals. Lena Stammler (re-elected),
Daniel Baur (re-elected), and Peter Neitzel were elected as auditors.

The board will re-convene in January to set goals for our 18-month term
(shortened because of the bylaws change) and I am very much looking forward
to working together with the new team.
Kind regards,

Lukas

Congratulations to Abraham for the new responsibility !

Dear Wikimedians,

It is our great pleasure to announce that during last weekend’s Board
retreat, we voted to appoint Abraham Taherivand as Executive Director of
Wikimedia Deutschland with immediate effect.

Abraham has joined Wikimedia Deutschland in 2012, has been the director of
our Software Development department, and interim ED in the past two months.
In all his roles he has shown vast experience and qualifications as well as
the much needed, deep commitment for Free Knowledge. We are convinced that
Abraham is the right person at the right time for Wikimedia Deutschland and
have great confidence that the management of the office is in good hands
with him. Abraham will continue to lead the Software Development department
on an interim basis until we have been able to fill this position with a
new permanent director.

Together with Abraham, WMDE staff, our members and communities as well as
other interested parties, the board will analyse and – where applicable –
revise the composition of leadership and decision making structures at WMDE
in 2017. Kurt Jansson, Sebastian Moleski and myself will be steering this
process and are available for your questions and feedback via email (
praesid...@wikimedia.de).

We wish Abraham the very best in this role, and the Board looks forward to
continuing to work with him. Please join us in congratulating Abraham!

distilled from our WMDE Fundraising Report. You can find it here:

  Hi everyone,

We just released our new WMDE fundraising report. See the detailed
  report here:

 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fundraising/Chapters/WMDE_2014_Report

There is also an executive summary of the report on the movement
 blog:
  https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/05/08/fundraising-made-in-germany/

  Cheers,
  Till

  *_Executive Summary_*
From € 700,00 to € 8,200,000 in less than five years. That is an
astonishing development. But fundraising is not just about money.

Fundraising at Wikimedia Deutschland, and across the entire Wikimedia
movement, not only helps us achieve financial goals, it also helps
  raise
awareness for our mission. We reach several million people each day
during our fundraising campaign in Germany, making ours the most
successful online campaign in the country. With the help of a
  systematic
strategy and comprehensive A/B tests, we have managed to increase our
annual fundraising campaign revenue by more than ten times in just
  five
years. This success is the result of a data-driven approach that
  focuses
primarily on donors and their behavior.

This Fundraising Report reviews the findings gathered from our latest
campaign and assesses how our work has developed over recent years.
Thanks to extensive A/B tests and the technical infrastructure that
 we
have built up over the years, we are constantly and systematically
collecting data and insights. This allows us to analyze the
  behavior and
payment methods of donors, which in turn helps us to plan and
continually improve our campaigns. We have identified five main
  factors
that contribute towards fundraising success at Wikimedia Deutschland,
and this report discusses them in detail.

  *Five factors of successful banners*

  1. Relevance: No association, no donation. Our results show that a
personal appeal in banners, the use of key words, and particularly
references to current events make our appeals more relevant and
therefore more persuasive to potential donors.

  2. Visibility is something one has to fight hard for. The time span
 we
have in which to draw attention to our message is very short. This
Fundraising Report presents findings relating to when is the best
 time
for the banner to appear and analyzes various design decisions,
  including color scheme.

  3. Closer to the reader: If there is one thing that the entire
  donation
process should be–from reading the appeal through to completing a
donation – it’s straightforward. The fewer clicks required, the
  better.
This fact is nothing new, and it certainly does not only apply to us,
but this report will explain the concrete application of this
  knowledge
in the creation of successful banners.

  4. Donation obstacles should be kept to a minimum. Two findings in
particular have emerged from our previous years’ work: Firstly,
including suggested donation amounts on the banner has proven to
  provide
effective guidance for donors. The lower the sum, the higher the
  number
of people who donate–and the overall success of a campaign is greater
when more donors give smaller amounts. Secondly, the option to donate
anonymously is very important to many donors.

  5. Raising the campaign profile: It pays to communicate fundraising
goals and show the progress of donations. In 2014 in particular we
 saw
how effective the creation of dramatic moments within a campaign
  can be.
This report also touches on a surprising topic: the principle of
  “social
proof” demonstrates how the behavior of a group can motivate others
 to
act in the same way, yet Wikimedia Deutschland’s fundraising campaign
made good use of the reverse of this effect.

Looking back, the five factors all played a crucial role in the
  success
of our campaigns; and looking ahead, their importance for the
international movement stretches far beyond monetary

Thanks to extensive A/B tests and the technical infrastructure that we
have built up over the years, we are constantly and systematically
collecting data and insights.

The time span we
have in which to draw attention to our message is very short. This
Fundraising Report presents findings relating to when is the best time
for the banner to appear and analyzes various design decisions,
 including color scheme.

In 2014 in particular we saw
how effective the creation of dramatic moments within a campaign
 can be.
This report also touches on a surprising topic: the principle of
 “social
proof” demonstrates how the behavior of a group can motivate others to
act in the same way, yet Wikimedia Deutschland’s fundraising campaign
made good use of the reverse of this effect.

Looking back, the five factors all played a crucial role in the
 success
of our campaigns; and looking ahead, their importance for the
international movement stretches far beyond monetary matters. We
 should
all see fundraising as the start of a relationship – one that requires
 continuous care and attention.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland: New board elected, annual plan postponed.

2014-12-02 Thread Tim Moritz Hector

Dear Wikimedia friends,

Wikimedia Deutschland held its General Assembly on Saturday, 29 November
2014. It is with great pleasure that I present to you our new board, for
the first time for a two-year term:

 *

Tim Moritz Hector (Chair): Long-time Wikipedian and Wikimedian
   (re-elected)

 *

Kurt Jansson (Vice Chair): WMDE founder and former president 2004-2009

 *

Lukas Mezger (Vice Chair): Former WMF legal intern, long time member
   of the DE community, lawyer

 *

Sebastian Moleski (Treasurer): Former president 2009-2012, highly
involved in the international movement, background in economics and IT

 *

Jürgen Friedrich (At-large): Professor of computer science and
digital media, very well connected to the academic and institutional
   world (re-elected)

 *

   Harald Krichel (At-large): Long-time Wikipedian

 *

Nikolas Becker (At-large): Former president, highly involved in EU
   advocacy

 *

Sabria David (At-large): Wikipedia researcher and slow media advocate

 *

Catrin Schoneville (At-large): Former WMDE spokeswoman (2008-2013),
well known to the national and international communities and
   organisations.

Anja Ebersbach got re-elected as Vice Chair but decided to step down
immediately on the following day. The board has elected Lukas Mezger as
her successor.

I am very much looking forward to working with these outstanding board
members in the coming two years. The diversity in Wikimedia backgrounds
and professional experience in our board will provide the foundation for
reflection, determination, and the look ahead. I am looking forward to a
fruitful exchange with our colleagues from the Wikimedia Foundation and
the other Wikimedia Affiliates.

The new board would like to extend its thanks to the outgoing board
members, Jens Best, Ralf Bösch, Anja Ebersbach, Markus Glaser, Steffen
Prößdorf, and Sebastian Wallroth for their dedicated service to the
organisation.

The General Assembly also discussed our annual plan and the FDC
recommendations. They wisely decided to postpone the final decision
about the plan and have called for an extraordinary general assembly in
Q1 2015. That gives our Executive Director Jan Engelmann and our staff
time to reflect on the feedback from the FDC and WMF and to work out an
improved annual plan in cooperation with the new board.

I am looking forward to leading Wikimedia Deutschland through the next
two years that will undoubtedly provide new challenges to the
organisation. As we reconsider our strategic focus and our financial
underpinnings, I am confident that we will emerge as a stronger partner
within the Wikimedia movement.

Best regards,

Tim Moritz Hector

Kurt Jansson (Vice Chair): WMDE founder and former president 2004-2009

Catrin Schoneville (At-large): Former WMDE spokeswoman (2008-2013),
well known to the national and international communities and

Anja Ebersbach got re-elected as Vice Chair but decided to step down
immediately on the following day. The board has elected Lukas Mezger as her
 successor.

I am very much looking forward to working with these outstanding board
members in the coming two years. The diversity in Wikimedia backgrounds and
professional experience in our board will provide the foundation for
reflection, determination, and the look ahead. I am looking forward to a
fruitful exchange with our colleagues from the Wikimedia Foundation and the
 other Wikimedia Affiliates.

They wisely decided to postpone the final decision about
the plan and have called for an extraordinary general assembly in Q1 2015.
That gives our Executive Director Jan Engelmann and our staff time to
reflect on the feedback from the FDC and WMF and to work out an improved
annual plan in cooperation with the new board.

I am looking forward to leading Wikimedia Deutschland through the next two
years that will undoubtedly provide new challenges to the organisation. As
we reconsider our strategic focus and our financial underpinnings, I am
confident that we will emerge as a stronger partner within the Wikimedia
 movement.

 Best regards,

 Tim Moritz Hector

Yes, Jan will be the Vorstand of Wikimedia Deutschland, starting on 1.
September. As an interim ED / Vorstand, he will have the same
responsibilities as a non-interim ED, e.g. he will be supervising all
staff of WMDE, he will be responsible for putting together the budget for
2015, he will be working together with the WMDE board in all strategic
matters, etc. So Jan is not only keeping the chair warm until the final ED
is found, but he will be acting ED during the transition period.

My role is much more limited: I am supporting Jan in his position, e.g. I
will work together with him on the budget and the FDC proposal, I will help
with the interacvtions with the WMF and other chapters, and so on. And I
will be in an advisiory role in all things that Jan wants my input in.

The reason why we choose the interim solution is the fact that the board of
WMDE made the decision that they wanted to find a new ED, to replace me. So
it would be awkward for us as an organisation (and for me personally as
well) if I would stay on in my position as ED, even so I do not have the
support of my board any longer. But it will take time to find a new ED, so
we decided together that the interim solution would work best for WMDE as
an organisation, as well as for me personally. I will be available for
advice and during the search for a new ED, at least until the end of
January, but WMDE will be run by an interim ED (=Jan) with a clear mandate
and full support of the board of WMDE.

I hope that answesr your questions?

 Cheers,

 Pavel

Cheers,

Pavel

 Is that a correct extrapolation/interpretation?

 Lodewijk

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Jan Engelmann as Interim

Thank you Tim for the update, and good luck Jan and WMDE with the
transition. I know Jan and I'm sure he will do great work in the meanwhile.

And also, huge thanks Pavel for your huge contribution to movement and to
chapter in general! Good luck as well on your next role.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland: monthly report April 2012

2012-05-02 Thread Michael Jahn
Dear all,

Wikimedia Deutschland's monthly report for April 2012 comes to you with
greetings from Germany's most important web conference. There is no en.wp
article about the re:publica (yet), so I'll link you to the German
article[1]. The re:publica 2012 takes place in Berlin, May 2-4. 270
speakers from more than 30 countries will address an audience of 4,000
bloggers, politicians and media people.

Wikimedia Deutschland is taking our core goals to this years re:publica. In
a dozen sessions at our own event booth we tell people about free
knowledge, free licenses, why Wikipedia needs more (female) editors, and
many more topics from participation to usability and quality. Among other
things, Wikidata is of course one of the most prolific subjects regarding
media coverage.

A Wikimedia recap of the event will certainly be part our next monthly
report. For now rest assured that the April report[2][3] holds its own ;-)
Go to Meta and learn about why we're posting a Wikipedian in Residence job
description and who was hired recently to support GLAM activities. Find out
about Wikidata's first month and what accounts for Wikimedia Deutschland's
upcoming surge of chapter members. No more spoilers.

Dear all,

please find Wikimedia Deutschland's monthly report for March 2012 on
Meta[1]. If you don't check it out, you may never get to know why political
parties in one of Germany's federal states just can't avoid to answer
WMDE's questions these days or which kinds of German newspapers covered
Wikipedia workshops lately. And well, there's Wikidata and much more
interesting things you wouldn't want to miss!

By the way, I linked this month's report both here

and here
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Reports

Supposedly, all chapter reports should be found in both places, but they're
not. Do we need both chapter subpages?
