Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Results of WMF Elections 2015

Hi,

//Having least number of eligible voter among the community was a major
challenge to the Indic candidates. Mean time in future indic community
support is mostly important.//

We are missing the larger perspective here.

All three winning candidates and others who lost closely did not get those
votes because they came from some specific global region or promised to do
something if elected.

They got those votes for what they have *already accomplished* in the
Wikimedia movement.

Even if there are more eligible voters from India, one cannot assume they
will all vote for candidates from India because ultimately Wikimedia
ecosystem values meritocracy. All candidates from India have got more votes
than the number of eligible voters from India. So, it shows that the world
is willing to vote for us if we project the right candidates.

For any candidate, if this is the first time the world is hearing about her
or him with no proven track record in the movement, the chances of getting
selected is zero.

Diversity based on gender, region is good but that cannot occur over night.

Only 2 out of 36 stewards are from India. Why don't we groom more stewards?

Why don't we get engaged in various organizational activities like GAC,
IEG, Wikimania scholarship committee, AffCom, FDC? Even having experience
in the local chapter is valued.

Why don't we try to get consistent visibility by attending and adding value
to various movement related events like Wikimania, Wikimedia Conference,
GLAM conference and Wikimedia Hackathon?

Why don't we expand our contributions beyond our own language communities
and get involved in more national and international activities? One could
even simply start by organizing Wiki Loves Earth like contests in India.

We already do have many such contributors and should encourage to contest
next time.

We need to bring more eminent contributors from FOSS movements to Wikimedia
and Wikimedians should expand their contributions in other like minded
initiatives.

If someone hopes to get selected for 2017 elections, they better start
working now at least.

All the best :)

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] [WMIN-Members] Phase 1 of Wiki Loves Food contest extended till May 7, 2015

2015-06-09 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Looks like the pictures in this phase a slightly better.
I am still not convinced about the whole contest process and the prizes.

Just have a look at the food pictures here:
http://finedinelove.com/art-of-food-loving-food-through-photographs/?utm_source=outbrainutm_medium=discoveryutm_campaign=Finedinelove

A single good food picture takes about at least 3-4 hours in a
professional studio.
Of course I am not expecting all the pictures of that quality but see
these clicks from the contest as examples of bad pictures:

Sudhanwa,

Here are few examples of professionally shot images received in Phase 1:

* https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kesari_bhath.jpg

* https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Salt_lassi.jpg

Please follow our social media channels where we will publish more such
pictures in  the coming days:

* https://www.facebook.com/WikiLovesFood

* https://twitter.com/WikiLovesFood

* http://wikilovesfood.org/

Any public facing contest will receive contributions from professionals and
amateurs alike. The dynamics of Commons community will ensure that only
pictures within the scope of Wikimedia projects will be retained.

For example, the picture you pointed out has already been identified and
nominated for deletion.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ABSOLUTELY_TRADITIONAL_ODIYA_DISH-FROM_STATE_ODISHA-INDIA.jpg

We are also identifying possible copyright violations. For example, please
see

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/Files_uploaded_by_Adichourasiya

Maintenance and cleanup work like these is also a part of our work and will
continue even after the contest is over.

2015-06-09 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
Totally agree with Ravi.
We should groom more stewards and GAC/FDC members. That will help prepare a
potential candidate (for board elections) for greater roles within the
movement. It also will help build credibility.
All the best for those who plan to stand in 2017. You're acid test starts
now itself.
