[Wikimediaindia-l] Ombuds Commission now accepting nominations for 2020
Hello everyone - I am forwarding the below from Karen on my team. If you are interested please apply! Joe Hello all, Please accept my apologies if you are receiving this a number of times today. We have sent it out to multiple mailing lists in order to reach as many community members as possible. Please feel free to forward this to any other community mailing lists you believe are relevant. It's coming close to time for annual appointments of community members to serve on the Ombudsman Commission (OC). This commission works on all Wikimedia projects to investigate complaints about violations of the privacy policy, especially in the use of CheckUser and Oversight tools, and to mediate between the complaining party and the individual whose work is being investigated. They may also assist the General Counsel, the Executive Director or the Board of Trustees in investigations of these issues. For more on their duties and roles, see http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Ombudsman_commission This is a call for community members interested in volunteering for appointment to this commission. Volunteers serving in this role should be experienced Wikimedians, active on any project, who have previously used the CheckUser tool OR who have the technical ability to understand the CheckUser tool and the willingness to learn it. They are expected to be able to engage neutrally in investigating these concerns and to know when to recuse when other roles and relationships may cause conflict. Commissioners are required to identify to the Wikimedia Foundation and must be willing to comply with the appropriate Wikimedia Foundation board policies (such as the access to non-public data policy[1] and the privacy policy[2]). This is a position that requires a high degree of discretion and trust. If you are interested in serving on this commission, please write me ( kbr...@wikimedia.org) an email off-list to detail your experience on the projects, your thoughts on the commission and what you hope to bring to the role. The commission typically consists of ten members; all applications are appreciated and will be carefully considered. The deadline for applications is the end of day on 31 December, 2019. Please feel free to pass this invitation along to any users who you think may be qualified and interested. Thank you! -Karen Brown On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Trust & Safety team 1. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Access_to_nonpublic_information_policy 2. https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Privacy_policy -- *Joe Sutherland* (he/him or they/them) Trust and Safety Specialist Wikimedia Foundation ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l
[Wikimediaindia-l] Community health metrics kit: Input needed!
Hello everyone - apologies for cross-posting! TL;DR: We would like your feedback on our Metrics Kit project. Please have a look and comment on Meta-Wiki: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_health_initiative/Metrics_kit The Wikimedia Foundation's Trust and Safety team, in collaboration with the Community Health Initiative, is working on a Metrics Kit designed to measure the relative "health"[1] of various communities that make up the Wikimedia movement: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_health_initiative/Metrics_kit The ultimate outcome will be a public suite of statistics and data looking at various aspects of Wikimedia project communities. This could be used by both community members to make decisions on their community direction and Wikimedia Foundation staff to point anti-harassment tool development in the right direction. We have a set of metrics we are thinking about including in the kit, ranging from the ratio of active users to active administrators, administrator confidence levels, and off-wiki factors such as freedom to participate. It's ambitious, and our methods of collecting such data will vary. Right now, we'd like to know: * Which metrics make sense to collect? Which don't? What are we missing? * Where would such a tool ideally be hosted? Where would you normally look for statistics like these? * We are aware of the overlap in scope between this and Wikistats < https://stats.wikimedia.org/v2/#/all-projects> — how might these tools coexist? Your opinions will help to guide this project going forward. We'll be reaching out at different stages of this project, so if you're interested in direct messaging going forward, please feel free to indicate your interest by signing up on the consultation page. Looking forward to reading your thoughts. best, Joe P.S.: Please feel free to CC me in conversations that might happen on this list! [1] What do we mean by "health"? There is no standard definition of what makes a Wikimedia community "healthy", but there are many indicators that highlight where a wiki is doing well, and where it could improve. This project aims to provide a variety of useful data points that will inform community decisions that will benefit from objective data. -- *Joe Sutherland* (he/him or they/them) Trust and Safety Specialist Wikimedia Foundation joesutherland.rocks ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l
[Wikimediaindia-l] Start of the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees elections
Please accept our apologies for cross-posting this message. On behalf of the Wikimedia Foundation Board Elections Committee, I am pleased to announce that self-nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Elections.[1] The Board of Trustees (Board) is the decision-making body that is ultimately responsible for the long-term sustainability of the Wikimedia Foundation,[2] so we value wide input into its selection. More information about this role can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_of_Trustees>. Please read the letter from the Board of Trustees calling for candidates here: <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_of_Trustees/Call_for_candidates>. The candidacy submission phase will last from April 7 (00:00 UTC) to April 20 (23:59 UTC) and occurring on Meta-Wiki at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_of_Trustees/Candidates> We will also be accepting questions to ask the candidates from April 7 to April 20. You can submit your questions on Meta-Wiki at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Board_of_Trustees/Questions> Once the questions submission period has ended on April 20, the Elections Committee will then collate the questions for the candidates to respond to beginning on April 21. The goal of this process is to fill the three community-selected seats on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. The election results will be used by the Board itself to select its new members. The full schedule for the Board elections is as follows. All dates are inclusive, that is, from the beginning of the first day (UTC) to the end of the last. * April 7 (00:00 UTC) - April 20 (23:59 UTC): Board nominations * April 7 - April 20: Board candidates questions submission period * April 21 - April 30: Board candidates answer questions * May 1 - May 14: Board voting period * May 15-19: Board vote checking * May 20: Board result announcement goal In addition to the Board elections, we will also soon be holding elections for the following roles: * Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) ** There are five positions being filled. More information about this election can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Funds_Dissemination_Committee>. * Funds Dissemination Committee Ombudsperson (Ombuds) ** One position is being filled. More information about this election can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017/Funds_Dissemination_Committee_Ombudsperson>. Please note that this year the Board of Trustees elections will be held before the FDC and Ombuds elections. Candidates who are not elected to the Board are explicitly permitted and encouraged to submit themselves as candidates to the FDC or Ombuds positions after the results of the Board elections are announced. More information on this year's elections can be found at <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2017>. Please feel free to post a note about the election on your project's village pump. Any questions related to the election can be posted on the talk page on Meta, or sent to the election committee's mailing list, . [Wikimediaindia-l] Supporting offline reading: Give your feedback on WMF prototypes
Hello, Wikimedians of India! The Reading team at the Wikimedia Foundation is working to support readers who want to take articles offline to read and share later on their phones - a use case we learned about from deep research earlier this year <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_Readers/Findings> [0]. We’ve built a few prototypes and are looking for people to test them, particularly people who don’t know Wikipedia all that well. We’d love if you could help us find anyone who doesn’t edit who might be interested in this feature and would want to test it. If you know anyone like this, please send them the following message: Hello! Wikipedia needs your help to improve. We’re looking for people who have internet access at least sometimes and like to have access to content when they’re not connected to the internet. We would like to learn from you. If you would be willing to participate in a study to tell us more, please fill out this survey <https://wikimedia.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_09wJQzQs54DETUF> [1] before November 25. Testing will only be available in English for now. Thank you! [1] https://wikimedia.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_09wJQzQs54DETUF This survey is hosted on a third-party service. For information about data handling and privacy, please see the survey privacy statement: https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Screener_Survey_for_Off line_Reading_Study_Privacy_Statement You can see the prototypes and leave comments on meta <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_Readers/Offline>[2], though please don’t send this page to anyone filling out the survey as it could bias test results. We’re also looking for feedback about how to identify and prioritize regions for our work, and would welcome your perspective on that meta page <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_Readers/Target_countries>[3] as well. Thanks, Joe + New Readers [0] https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_Readers/Findings [1] (duplicated from excerpt above) https://wikimedia.qualtrics.co m/SE/?SID=SV_09wJQzQs54DETUF This survey is hosted on a third-party service. [Wikimediaindia-l] New Readers Research India :: June 13 - 27
Hey everyone, Wanted to provide an update on the upcoming Wikimedia Foundation’s New Readers research in India. We have taken feedback from a few folks, and enjoyed a good chat with Yohann Thomas on priority research needs. Reflecting these, we will be in India from June 13 to 27. The research will focus on: - Urban, semi-urban, and rural internet users - in Hindi, Tamil, and English languages - From education, technology, and rural industry backgrounds - Around the Delhi (including nearby Noida and Gurgaon) and Chennai areas We're really looking forward to visiting India and learning more about the many different kinds of internet users there, and of course, to potentially meeting some of you during our travels! If you are in or around Delhi / Chennai, please email me so we can connect. [Wikimediaindia-l] New Readers research in India - an update
Hello all! My name is Joe Sutherland and I am writing to you about the New Readers research project <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_Readers>. As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation is trying to better understand internet users around the world. We are particularly interested in how they find information online, what perceptions they have (if any) of Wikipedia, and what are the top barriers to preventing them from using Wikimedia sites. Our goal is to better understand, and then serve potential new readers of Wikimedia projects. Our priorities for this research are on Meta-Wiki <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/New_Readers/Priorities>. To learn this, we are doing qualitative research sprints in Mexico, Nigeria, and YES, India. That’s where you come in. We want our research to reflect needs and experiences of Wikimedia communities throughout India. Specifically: what questions do you have about general internet users in India? What groups (language, professional, regional) would you like to know more about? What barriers do you believe exist for potential Wikipedia readers? If you have thoughts or questions, please email me! We will share our proposed research approach with your inputs incorporated wherever possible by next week. Excited to work together, Joe (User:JSutherland (WMF) <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:JSutherland_(WMF)>) -- *Joe Sutherland* Communications Fellow [remote] joesutherland.rocks | @jrbsu <http://twitter.com/jrbsu> | +44 (0) 7722 916 433 ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org To unsubscribe from the list / change mailing preferences visit https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l
