Hi..
Thanks for carrying out the research project. As of now I couldnt comment
on anything. Because I couldnt understand the requirement for the research
and what is the expected outcome and what is the practical use of the
project.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Announcing two new WikiCite grant programs: Project & events, and e-scholarships

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Announcing two new WikiCite grant programs: Project
& events, and e-scholarships
To: wikicite-discuss , <
wikid...@lists.wikimedia.org>,

Dear all,
I have the great pleasure to announce two new grant programs for projects
that support the goals of WikiCite: the promotion open citations and linked
bibliographic data to serve free knowledge.

The steering committee is now accepting applications for the following two
types of grants. For both types the application deadline is 1 October 2020,
and all projects must be completed by 1 May 2021.

--- Project & Event grants ---

Grants between $2,000 and $10,000 (USD equivalent) are available to
individuals, groups, and organisations with a project that supports the
goals of Wikicite.

All the details, the eligibility criteria (especially for in-person
events[1]), and the application form are available on the WikiCite project
& event grants homepage:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite/grants

Individuals, groups, and organizations may apply, and projects may be of
any nature. This includes technical (e.g. software, tools), event (online,
or in-person), resources (training materials, documentation), or other
forms not mentioned – as long as it supports the goals of WikiCite.

--- e-Scholarships ---

The e-scholarship program is a new kind of grant in Wikimedia, created in
response to an era of COVID-19 quarantines, and the 2030 Movement strategy
goals.

An e-scholarship provides a per-diem equivalent allowance for 1-5 people to
stay at their home(s) and work for 2-4 days on a project supporting the
mission of WikiCite. e-scholarship recipients' projects can be the kinds of
things they might have previously undertaken with a scholarship for an
in-person hackathon, unconference, or research trip, for example.

All the details, eligibility criteria, program design principles, and the
application form are available on the WikiCite e-scholarships homepage:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite/e-scholarship

Funding will:
- be provided in advance;
- be calculated at the WMF per-diem rate for the city where the
e-scholarship recipient lives;
- and (as it is a living allowance) not require recipients to submit
expense reports.

"Remote group" applications are encouraged, as are projects which focus on
content or communities which are historically underrepresented in Wikimedia
projects. Building a bot, fixing a tool, wrangling a dataset, writing
complete documentation... all are valid e-scholarship projects. A
confirmation letter (in advance) and/or participation certificate
(afterwards) can also be provided.

- WikiCite is funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Wikimedia
Foundation -

[1] Applications for in-person events are eligible. The WMF will release a
risk assessment calculator for in-person events and a checklist of
precautions in early September. This protocol will apply to all Wikimedia
Foundation supported events. Applicants may publish a draft of their
proposals now, and edit it before the submission deadline to include a copy
of the results from the risk assessment protocol once it is published.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Fundraising in India - Launched

2020-08-03 Thread balaji
Mostly of people asked of if the donation notice was geninue or scam. Since
they know I am closely associated with wikipedia movement they asked me.

Sudden popup of donation notice seems like a spam or hacking by external
agency. Totally uncool. And seeing the count shown I felt like I am being
tracked. It's too much of a bad feeling.

Totally unhappy about the way fundraising banners are shown.

Regards
J. Balaji.

need of registration, download of apps etc. And can undergo training in low

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Train the Trainer Programme 2020

2020-01-22 Thread balaji
Please finalize the location of training soon. Better if before the final
date to apply. Many need to consider logistics, mobility issues, number of
travel days before and after the training. It's hard to assume blind faith
from applicants that they should be ready where ever the final location.

J. Balaji.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Call for bids to host Wikisource Advance Training 2019

2019-09-04 Thread balaji
Hello Tito,

Thanks for the detailed reply.

I have few feedback for the reply.

//C. >>If there is an agenda for this training and format of the training,
it would be good to know before bidding.
Agenda is decided after the needs-assessment of the participants. If you
have topics to suggest, please let us know. About format, let me answer in
the last part, as it is similar to "hands-on proofreading".//

If not a detailed schedule atleast some broad topics and formats need to be
determined. Because people are dedicating two days from their busy life for
this training. They should make a informed decision regarding weather the
topics are already covered in previous training ? whether it is worth to
apply for this training. Also only then we may know the difference between
previous trainings and proposed advanced training.

//D. >> What would be the criteria for selection of people to attend this
training?
Excellent question. Please feel to suggest what selection criteria should
be (number of edits, number of proofread/validated pages, recent activity).
I'll check and get back to this with more details.//

A suggestion regarding this point. since this is advance training, to
implement the learnings from the training many a times some privileges such
as interface admin, admin is required. so atleast one person of a language
of such privileges may be selected. or those who are selected be given such
privileges temporarily by the community.

//any proposal for the trainers?//
The above point is not covered in the reply

Thanks and regards,
J. Balaji.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Call for bids to host Wikisource Advance Training 2019

2019-09-04 Thread balaji
Hi,

The title for the meeting in fixed as "Wiki Advanced Training". Already
minimum one training was conducted by CIS for many of the Indic wikisource
community. How the "Wiki Advanced Training" training is going to be
different from the earlier trainings. If there is an agenda for this
training and format of the training, it would be good to know before
bidding. Also any proposal for the trainers? What would be the criteria for
selection of people to attend this training? Because in many of the advance
trainings people without basics also attend and pull down the average level
of the trainings. (or they won't benefit from such trainings). Also to few
members I spoke in Tamil wikisource community felt that instead of training
a two day editathon can be conducted with experts helping people who face
problems while proofreading.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia-l] Security Notification: Malware creating fake Wikipedia donation banner

2019-01-24 Thread balaji

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Security Notification: Malware creating fake
Wikipedia donation banner
To: , , <
wikitech-ambassad...@lists.wikimedia.org>

Hello,

In order to keep the community informed of threats against Wikimedia
projects and users, the Wikimedia Security team has some information to
share.

Malware installed via pirated contented downloaded from sites such as the
Pirate Bay can cause web browsers compromised by the malware to create a
fake donation banner for Wikipedia users. While the actual malware is not
installed or distributed via Wikipedia, unaware visitors may be confused or
tricked by it's activities.

The malware seeks to trick visitors to Wikipedia by looking like a
legitimate Wikipedia banner asking for donations. Once the user clicks on
the banner, they are then taken to a portal that leads them to transfer
money to a fraudulent bitcoin account that is not controlled by the
Foundation.

The current version of this malware is only infecting Microsoft Windows
users at the time of this notification. To date, the number of people
affected is small. The fraudulent accounts have taken approximately $700
from infected users. However, we strongly encourage all users to use and
update their antivirus software.

Additional details and a screenshot of the fake donation banner on can be
found at Bleepingcomputer.com. [0]

[Wikimediaindia-l] Community wishlist survey

2018-11-10 Thread balaji
Hello everyone,

The community wish list survey is underway. Today is the last day for the
wishlist. Is there any India specific wish to be added in the wishlist? if
so today is the last day to do that.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2019

In addition recently the old wiktionary app from the wikimedia foundation
was withdrawn form the google playstore for some odd reasons. So now to
access wiktionary content we need to depend on adware/malware ridden third
party apps. Now there is a wishlist proposal for the wiktionary app. Please
leave your feedback regarding that here.

Hi Dhaval S. Vyas,
Sorry for intruding the conversation. Gujarati wikisource looks like has
implemented ws-export gadget tool. If it is installed then the users would
find it easy to download the books. Because unlike wikipedia, wikisource
users would prefer to read the content offline in a variety of devices.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Recruiting Community Advocate for Punjabi Wikimedians

2018-08-13 Thread balaji
Hi,
Thanks for letting us know the information happening in Punjabi
community. One of the common problem while scanning many books is that some
pages may be missed while scanning. Or even sometimes the printed books
itself might have some missing pages. Such books are not useful in
wikisource and it would drain away lot of precious volunteer time. Imagine
a situation while after proofreading a hundred page then it is discovered a
page is missing in between :( So kindly evolve a mechanism to crosscheck
pages, pagenumbers, total scan count etc. If the community is already aware
of this issue then kudos and all the best.
