Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikimedia India: Wikipedia Takes Ahmedabad, January 2012

2012-01-04 Thread Sudhanwa Jogalekar
Well,
On various other mailing lists, if a person is referred in some cross
reference, it is usually welcome considering that some other like
minded people are also involved in the activities.
However, this is probably the only list where such cross references
are taken as objectionable.

eg. Lets say if Srikanth is mentioned in some mail on a security
mailing list saying that " "Srikanth" was involved in organising and
contributing in some Security event" and I reply to the thread saying
"it is nice to know my 'Wikipedia' friend is also involved", it will
be appreciated and taken positively as there is a common factor/cross
reference now.

On this list, the scenario is completely different. Looks like
mentioning the FOSS word itself is a bad thing.
And I am not talking about any professional matters here. On such
lists in the given example, there are absolute professionals who are
highly paid and even involved in writing standards. And they
contribute much more voluntarily on those lists and some websites.

Hope you get the point from the example.
/me stopping in this thread.

-Sudhanwa

hi Vickram,

It is awesome that Kartik is contributing to several open knowledge
and open source projects. But, many conversations do take place
without many professionals/amateurs stating what else they do. I'm not
seeking to downplay the contributions of FOSS, per se.

Pradeep: given the enthusiasm with which we encourage Wikimedians to
proclaim and proselytise this facet of public service (ie, in fora other
than this or related ones) it is odd to find you saying that 'these
professionals' (as against, presumably, amateur FOSSers) do not talk about
their work unnecessarily. I did not think that Sudhanwa was doing this, my
own takeaway is that Kartik not only remits public service at Wikimedia,

Yes, and cameras have not essentially changed in well over 100 years. They
went digital, but all that happened was the recording medium changed. With
the simple pinhole, it is perfectly possible to have software driven
lensless, infinitely variable depth of field and focus image recording.
Find me one commercial model camera that does this, and I can show you
dozens of advertising messages that equate good imaging with megapixels.

Can we stick to the point? I do not think anybody on this list is actively
aware of any programming techniques that work for the brain; the question
or proprietary or FOSS doesn't even arise. However, if you want to include
alpha wave conditioning (analogue programming) then surely you will not
want to also claim that yoga is proprietary?

are largely stuck in the past, their inefficiency mandates that the purpose
of public mass transport is a #fail, either because the service providers
cannot earn money doing it, or because individual means of public
transportation do not 'talk' to each other, their communication channels
being trapped within proprietary silos, leaving the public floundering with
the need to carry small change and waste time buying multiple tickets to
get from A to B. And the few reasonably successfully integrated public mass
transit setups that exist anywhere in the world (eg, London) use
proprietary software that does not replicate or scale to other places.

2012-01-03 Thread Noopur
Hello all :)
I have finally summoned the courage to go and check what my volunteers have
done. It's delightful to see that they've followed our instructions and
given their best. You guys should have seen how motivated they were and how
much fun we had! I wish there was someone permanently available to keep the
Ahmedabad community going.
I hope to plan something similar for Delhi and kickstart our SIG activities
there. All your inputs, suggestions, corrections are welcome. :)
Warmly

This is amazing. There's a treasure trove of stuff here from the pictures of
Gandhi's room to Chaniya Choli sellers and to the 25 pictures you can choose
from to add to the Law Garden article on Wikipedia! oh, and thank you for a

238 images for a Single Day event, not contest is splendid indeed. And
if the figure is still increasing, then you guys deserve a round of
applause. Congrats, especially Noopur. Your enthusiasm seems to have
infected everyone. Also to Pradeep, who on New Years day was busy
campaigning for this event in the city. Cheers,

2012-01-03 Thread Arnav Sonara
Hello,

304+ images Thanks and congrats to you guys for organizing this.

Also the participants were told about adding Category:Ahmedabad_1 to their
images, there were quite a few who didn't add the categories.

Thus a mess could have been created, but User:Me.aragorn and myself started
adding relevant category by keeping an eye on newly uploaded files.

Greetings! This is a short update on the January edition of Wikipedia
Takes Ahmedabad. From where I stand, the event has been a resounding
success! Over seventy-five people turned up, both old and young, this
morning, which is no mean feat since it was very cold as well as a working
day.

Special thanks to Noopur Raval, our benevolent dictator and project
mastermind, Srikeit Tadepalli, who spent time with me following the project
participants prepping them and helping them figure out Wikimedia projects.
Our heartfelt gratitude to Aviral Mediratta, Khayal Dave, Yash Vadiwala,
Konarak Ratnakar, Smit Shah, Karthik Mistry and Chirag Solanki; our team
leads and coordinators for helping everyone take beautiful pictures.

Please keep an eye on our maintenance [[Category:Ahmedabad 1]], specially
created for the event. 238 pictures have been uploaded so far... and we
expect a lot more being uploaded by tomorrow.

I will be posting a project report soon. Thank you!
