Yeah, they ran out of football to babble about or something.
Drivetimes tend to end up on iPlayer, presumably today's will in due

 Perhaps I'll get Paxmanned!

 I NEED INFORMATION.

 * When's Flagged Revs being switched on?
 * Where's the latest version of *precisely what's happening*?
 * etc?

I can arse it through for Radio 5, but Newsnight is a bit scary!

For those not familiar with British TV, Newsnight is probably the most
highbrow current affairs program we have. This is a very big deal!
Best of luck to you David, I know you'll do a fantastic job.

Another thought: this is actually more open than just locking the
 article. :-)

I've been trying to push precisely that point. People view this as a
bad thing, but as long as Wikipedia doesn't apply it to everything
and uses it to replace the current protection of articles, then it
 could work very well.

I would push the alternative to protection angle. It should be used like
a taser should be used - as an alternative to shooting people, not as a
routine tool.

Unfortunately, I've yet to find a page that describes how wide-spread
the flagged protection is intended to be...

I've noticed a dearth of information on that too.

Yes. When there's a media feeding frenzy, it's all-hands time! As I
posted here about the IWF kerfuffle ...

Mike's been directing this one and the WMUK phone seems to be where

Would it be worth applying for a grant via the below incubator?
Particularly for the schools' project, I guess - does anyone have
other projects in mind that this would suit?

Thanks,
Mike

 Talis Incubator for Open Education

For the latest news follow us on twitter: @talisincubator

Talis understands the growing importance of the Open Education
movement and its potential impact on how education is accessed,
 assessed and certified.

Aimed at individuals or small groups, the Talis Incubator for Open
Education provides angel funding and other forms of assistance for
ideas and projects that have the potential to further the cause of
Open Education through the use of technology. All we ask in return is
that you donate or ‘open source’ the intellectual property generated
back to the communities that could benefit most from your work.
 The brief

1. Write a proposal outlining your Open Education related project
or idea, making a bid for funding of between £1,000 and £15,000.
2. After reviewing and making sure your proposal meets the
 guidelines, submit it to incuba...@talis.com.
3. A proposal review board made up of independent thought leaders
and Talis representatives decide which projects get funding.
4. For successful bids, Talis awards you the funds and organises
any other help you have asked for.
5. Complete the project according to the schedule outlined in
 your proposal.
6. Talis helps you to make sure your work is disseminated amongst
 the community.

 from http://blogs.talis.com/education/incubator/

they also note We also welcome applications from outside the UK,
however we regret that we can only consider and award amounts in GBP
(£), so if you are from outside the UK please account for exchange
rate fluctuation, and make sure you can receive funds paid in GBP.

 Looks a bit interesting!

 cheers
 Brianna

Well done, David, good work! It's a pity you weren't able to emphasise
the this is better than what we had before point more, but at least
you managed to mention it. However, it sounded like the plan was to
have all BLPs flag protected, but I don't see that on the description
of the trial. In fact, it doesn't seem to mention it having anything
to do with BLPs other than BLP being one of the policies an article
needs to satisfy to be flagged.

Also watched it with interest, I was also shaking my head when she said that
free editing had been a 'mirage' all along. I think the point that this was
just a short trial and was not something that would come quickly was not
emphasised enough, but meh.

But yes, I certainly would not be brave enough to step up and talk about
FlaggedRevs. Great work, David. :)

[Wikimediauk-l] Fwd: Y! Alert: Wikimedia UK Blog

2009-08-25 Thread Andrew Turvey
Now that we've got this new blog, it would be useful if we could get the
various media integrated so that the message is getting through all the
different channels.

I've been looking at ways to get blog posts automatically fed into the email
list. I've come across Yahoo Alerts, which runs off the RSS feed and seems to
work, but it doesn't give you any images and mixes in the image captions to the
text. Of course there is a link to the story if anyone wants to follow up.

My question: would people like, in principle to receive an alert like this to
this email group whenever a blog story is published?

If so, is a Yahoo Alert like below good enough?

Does anyone know of any other system that is better?
