[Wikimediauk-l] Social Entrepreneur awards

2009-02-16 Thread Andrew Cates
Is Wikipedia UK pitching for the HBOS social entrepreneur awards?

I was kind of wondering about putting the Schools Wikipedia in as a pitch

Deadline
Next Monday
Biggest challenge for Wikimedia
Got to be a completely UK project. Hence the Schools Wikipedia thought.

Funny kind of thing which you could pitch lots of ways.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Gift Aid - a further update

2009-01-02 Thread Andrew Cates
Any progress on accepting direct debits?

A

2009/1/2 Andrew Turvey ratur...@yahoo.co.uk:
 Hi all,

I spoke to the Charities Unit at the UK Tax Authorities today for an update
on our application for Gift Aid. We wrote to them on 23rd November applying
for Gift Aid status and they previously said they had a backlog of 6-8
weeks' post to work through so we should expect an answer in approximately
 mid January.

Unfortunately they are now working on mid-October post, meaning the backlog
has risen to 10 weeks and we can now expect an answer around 10th February.

On a positive note they have confirmed that we can ask people to sign the
Gift Aid declaration now, notwithstanding that we haven't received a
response, and we will be able to reclaim tax on these donations as soon as
we are approved without having to approach the donors again.

 I'll keep everyone informed.

 Regards,

 Andrew Turvey

Subject: Gift Aid - an update

 Hi all,

Just to keep you up to date regarding Gift Aid. I spoke to the HMRC
Charities Unit today and asked them when we should expect a response. They
said they are currently taking between 6-8 weeks so we should expect to hear
 around mid January.

As we are not registered with the Charity Commission their initial response
may ask for more information to support out status as a charity; however,
I'll keep everyone informed when we hear.

What about calling themselves elected community representatives of UK
wikipedia editors?

In my view yes. The WMF's legitimate role in representing the
community is equally derived from its (semi) democratic nature. You do
not derive your right to speak only from their democratic legitimacy
 but also from your own.

You will not be able to speak on behalf of them (unless specifically
mandated), but you are already able to speak on behalf of us for which
you require no blessing from them (especially given the blessing is in
 the post).

The problem with that is that no-one is going to care what Wiki UK
Ltd. has to say on the issues. They would have to appear as
Wikipedia volunteer just as David does, since there is nothing else
 relevant they could be called.

2008-12-14 Thread Andrew Cates
I would not have bothered to vote if I did not feel the board in some
way represented the community of which I am part.

There is an organization where I am a member for pragmatic reasons but
hate every proclamation they make (the AA: I want breakdown cover, not
rabid pro-polluting lobbying), but for this kind of thing I think you
should feel we want you to speak and we'll let you know if we
disagree.

I just wanted to hear everyone's views about the role Wiki UK Ltd
played in responding to the IWF issues.

The general consensus among the Board was that we shouldn't really get
involved as we didn't yet have chapter status. Individuals were
encouraged to do what they could but the Board decided to stay stum
itself and leave David and others to take the lead. Is everyone
comfortable that that was the right decision?

 Yes, no doubt about it.

Presumably once Wiki UK is recognised as the chapter you would expect
it to take more of a lead?

Probably. Details need to be decided on a case by case basis, but I
think part of WMUK's role is to represent the UK community. That
includes speaking for the community (although not the WMF, of course)
in these kind of matters. I think WMUK would say the same kind of
things as David did, just with a more official looking caption on the
 screen.
