Therefore head of the UK Chapter? Or not?

I'm not sure I understand the question. We don't have an official
position of head, but I guess that would most accurately describe the
chair, yes.

I am asserting that registered charity and the UK Chapter as a body
are one and the same, and that the Chapter forms part of the Foundation,
and that the Foundation might have a view.

Does the Foundation have a view? They should, since the Chapter is a
part of the Foundation.

Lets not get too distracted from the issue at hand here (either onto
frivolity or discussion of the Chapter/Foundation relationship). Or at
least could you split that to another thread.

I have two follow up queries/thoughts:

* Can anyone explain why this board statement was sent only to this mailing
list and not the entire membership?

* It seems the next step is an ordinary resolution of members - either via
and EGM or simply majority vote submitted to the board/staff. What is the
current membership size of Wikimedia UK?

There's no particular reason for sending it to members. This list is the

I've been trying to find out the membership size. I think Richard was going

half of all members to vote and vote the same way, which is at least 150

Yes, and if the foundation changes its mission to include not having Fae as

I disagree here; clearly active members of the charity participate here,
but that is not everyone by a long stretch. I suppose it leads to another
question; how many members are *not* on this mailing list?

And if this really *is* the primary way of communicating with the
membership then I encourage the board to speedily review that policy.

This is a matter that affects the public perception of the charity - do we
really want one of our members, not on this mailing list, to find out about
it first via the Telegraph website?

It's bad, and secretive, form at best.

Is this really a difficult number to ascertain? Surely this is a key figure
that should be in a database somewhere, and easily queried.

Our opinions on whether a written resolution is feasible due to requiring a
majority of 150 is neither here nor there - it is in our articles as an
option and exercising our rights as members of the charity is important.

I disagree. The membership of Wikimedia UK has a right to dedicated
channel of communication (the normal choice being email, but SMS,
telephone and letter should be on offer). It exists, and has been used
in the past to announce things such the result of the AGM voting.

Wikimedia UK (a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee)
can and should communicate with the UK community (no legal status) and
with the membership (a group who have a legal status, and a set of
duties e.g. elect the Board of Trustees). Since this thread is about a
Trustee, then I think you will find members wanting to be kept up to
date, without the need to read this list.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] [WMUK Board] Statement regarding Ashley Van Haeften, Chair of Wikimedia UK

2012-08-01 Thread Richard Symonds
The current membership size is circa 300, +-20. I don't have the exact
figure to hand, but I will have it by the end of today. I am going to do
some database work later and check that the database is still accurate
(important if we are going to be voting on anything), and then sort out the
approval of new members - there are a few pending aapproval. You can
expect, based on previous votes, to have 60 to 70 people voting in total,
out of the 300 or so members. Organising an EGM for 300+ people, even by
email, is no small task.

The board statement was sent to the mailing list and put on the blog, but I
simply haven't had time (or the thought) to send out an email about it to
the entire membership list. We very rarely send out emails to the entire
membership list - usually only once a year, just before the AGM. It's not
good practice to simply hit email all, because it tends to swamp
uninterested people, who then end up unsubscribing from the list. The
majority of our communications are done through this mailing list, or on
the UK wiki, as all of our active members read this list. Certainly, all
our members are encouraged to join the UK Wikimedia mailing list when they
join the chapter. We're actively reviewing the way through which we
communicate with everyone, however - the 2012 Comms Review has been seen by
a few volunteers, and should be ready for general feedback soon.

Regular newsletters to our member and donor base is one of the key

There's some very, very dodgy stuff on there. Very odd of Fox to be linking

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] [WMUK Board] Statement regarding Ashley Van Haeften, Chair of Wikimedia UK

2012-08-01 Thread Tom Holden
I am more than a little disappointed with the way the board's handled all of
this. It was abundantly clear from the outset that the correct response was to
lean on Ashley to resign, in the expectation that he would stand again at the
next AGM and probably be re-elected, once all of this had blown over.

All I see from the board is a terribly worded blog post, and a load of nit
picking about the press articles. It is almost completely irrelevant how
accurate they are, or whether you like the news organisation or not, if the
trustees of a charity become the news story, they have done something very
wrong.

Now Ashley is sure to face a confidence motion at an EGM, which will do even
more damage to the charity's reputation. Honestly, at this point my confidence
in the whole board is wavering, aside from any thoughts I may have about the
appropriateness or otherwise of having Ashley as the chair.

This has gone on too long already. Please end it now, before more damage is
done to our reputation.

Fixed now... it reads Wikimedia UK said it did not have an official view
on pornography on Wikipedia as it does not control the content or have
responsibilty for it. Not quite what we said, but accurate enough for the
Telegraph.

At least they've got a quote from Larry Sanger in there.

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] [WMUK Board] Statement regarding Ashley Van Haeften, Chair of Wikimedia UK

2012-07-27 Thread Thomas Morton

The Board points out that the editing issues were fully public before, and
during, the recent elections to the board, and were openly and publicly
discussed. Our membership placed their trust in him by electing him as a
Trustee. He was then elected unanimously as Chair of the Board. He
continues to have the full support of the Board.

Just to be clear; is the board here *admitting *knowledge of Fae's
problematic behaviour prior to the election?

Why was this not investigated or mentioned at that point?

What about the problematic editing history post-election which is what
ultimately led to the Arbcom case?

Did the board, as I suggested, consider looking into the copyright
allegations - which are clearly of great pertinence to e.g. GLAM WMUK.

Did the board discuss, and adopt a stance, in relation to how Fae would be
able to function when in situations where people were editing Wikipedia
(i.e. obviously he cannot participate or assist anyone in doing so).

Unfortunately, although I admire the support you have shown him, I can't
help feeling that there is more of a knee jerk gathering of the caravans
here, rather than the full, frank independent investigation I suggested.

2012-07-27 Thread HJ Mitchell
Tom, you know I respect your opinion, but I think you're trying to read more
into the board's statement than is there and you're misinterpreting it in a way
that supports your view.

The issues surrounding Fae on enwiki were well known at the time of the AGM,
and the membership re-elected Fae by a healthy margin. It is disingenuous to
pretend that the issues were significantly less mature at the AGM than they
were days later when the arbitration case in question (the second on the issue
- of which the first was declined) was filed.

It is not within the remit of the board to investigate half-baked allegations
of on-wiki misconduct, especially when nobody making the allegations appears
(and do correct me if I've missed something) to have substantiated them with
conclusive evidence. Nor is it within its remit to determine what sort of
editing instruction Fae can undertake. He can ask for help if he's running an
event that requires editing, and if the line between training and proxying for
a banned user, he can seek clarification from ArbCom or the community.

As some members of Wikimedia UK will know, our Chair, Ashley Van Haeften,
user name Fae, has been the subject of sanctions by the Arbitration
Committee of the English Wikipedia (Arbcom), the volunteer committee that
exists to provide binding remedies to Wikipedia disputes. In particular,
he has been banned from editing the English language Wikipedia for at
least the next six months, after which he can appeal the ban.

The Board of Wikimedia UK notes the decision of Arbcom.

The Board is united in the view that this decision does not affect his
role as a Trustee of the charity. His work at Wikimedia UK has always been
enthusiastic and diligent. In particular, his knowledge of charity
governance, and his ability to bring about consensus at WMUK's board
meetings, have been particularly valuable.

The Board points out that the editing issues were fully public before, and
during, the recent elections to the board, and were openly and publicly
discussed. Our membership placed their trust in him by electing him as a
Trustee. He was then elected unanimously as Chair of the Board. He
continues to have the full support of the Board.

It is a public list. Anyone can subscribe.

The archives are restricted to list members, despite a clear consensus
being established that they shouldn't be, though. Can a list admin
please fix that?

It says: This is a private list, which means that the list of members

That is a very specific meaning of private. It only refers to the
list of members and, since anyone can subscribe and then see the list,
it really isn't very private at all. (I don't know why the list is
private - it should be made public since there is no purpose served by
having it be private.)

It isn't public. The software considers it private. Emails to the
list can be claimed to have been sent under the assumption that it
isn't going to be published on the web.

This was previously discussed in thread List archives from March 29
to April 11, where list admin UK trustee Mike Peel promised to
restore the list to being a public list in three days (i.e. April 14)
after he had removed any problematic
emails.(7b53a90e-3a36-4737-be50-fc23295f0...@wikimedia.org.uk)

This was followed by Fae saying he would unsubscribe if it was
restored to being a public
list.(CAHRYMYXVd0RkFduwVYRjoth=bb8ap3dlnf87jv+_50furcg...@mail.gmail.com)
