[Wikimediauk-l] Wikimedia UK and the Science Museum Late

2014-11-14 Thread Stevie Benton
Hello everyone,

Just under two weeks to go until the Science Museum Lates event on
Wednesday 26 November. We are still looking for more volunteers to help out
at what will be a fun, lively and unusual event.

There are all sorts of things to get involved with, from helping with video
and audio, to talking to people about the Wikimedia projects, helping folks
photograph the brand new Information Age gallery for Commons or helping
people record their voice for Wikipedia.

More details, including sign-ups, can be seen here -
https://wikimedia.org.uk/wiki/Science_Museum_Late

Thanks and regards,

Stevie

Re: [Wikimediauk-l] Magna Carta

2014-11-14 Thread Stevie Benton
Hello everyone,

Thanks for all the comments on this so far.

Given some of the feedback I think a call to action on one significant
article is perhaps not going to attract too much attention. But what I
think could work is a new year kind of story in which Wikimedia UK
releases its top 50 targets for improvement on Wikipedia. It's the kind
of listicle that is quite popular these days. Last year we put out a press
release on the 20 most searched for terms on Wikipedia and that got quite a
lot of traction.

If others think this could work (or we could reduce the number to 20, or
25, or whatever) then I'll create a page on the UK wiki where we can post
suggestions for articles that might be relevant in 2015 (such as Magna
Carta, of course) and work from there.

Thanks again for all of your comments.

Stevie

Thanks for the videos – have just included one in the article.

Working on the linked pages would also be useful – both the
abbots/bishops/barons (NB not “signatories”) and the settings
(improvements to Runnymede have already been requested) and some of the
legal revisions along with later effects or interpretation. Lots of the
bulleted lists of “clauses in one charter but not another” also need to be
tackled (and referenced).Any further help appreciated.Rod

There will be less demanding work, for example the signatories articles
maybe could do with work. I just linked to [[Abbott of Peterborough]],
only a few of those abbots have any biographical details - VCH will supply
plenty of useful information, typically more on the latter abbots.

I have uploaded a few presentations and talks on video which would
cheer up Magna Carta articles, some are quite 'non-academic friendly'
for readers who might be daunted by a long encyclopaedia article
(videos play back without having to leave a Wikipedia article). They
 are currently in
 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Magna_Carta but will
probably be moved to a sub-category in a while. The lectures might be
helpful for those thinking of improving articles and are looking for a
quick guide to issues and interpretations.

Of particular interest are a video from the British Library

 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Four_surviving_Magna_Carta_to_be_brought_together_for_the_first_time_in_history.webm

and a friendly one from Parliament

 https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Magna_Carta_and_the_Emergence_of_Parliament.webm
 .

These are uploaded thanks to a YouTube download/upload script I put
together for a WikiprojectMed request. If there are others on YouTube
you find with a CC-BY licence, drop me a link by email and I'll get
around to taking a look. Unfortunately handling video remains a
challenge for contributors, so I think my uploads are the first videos
 on Commons for this topic.

OK, after talking to Stevie and having previously talked to some others I
have created this page on the UK wiki:

Feel free to expand and in particular to add any that you are interested in
working on.
