Marlon, Go to Home Depot or a Lowes and buy Unistrut. It has all kinds
of parts and adapters that will allow ou to make a really nice rack on
the cheap.

It's looking like a very nice rig. I miss all of the storage room in my
Taurus wagon. But, since it's now totaled and sitting in a wrecking yard it
was time to get something new. Hope I can get 284k miles out of this one
 too!

4 wheel drive, 7 passenger, Bose tunes, 20mpg so far (had it all of 24 hours
and no ladder on top yet :-), it's looking like it'll be a nice rig!

In looking around I think I might better off building something. sigh.

 laters,

Re: [WISPA] Insurance

2008-09-09 Thread Mac Dearman

My opinion of insurance is not good! (Insurance is a racket and of Satan
-hehehehe)

When you buy insurance, buy what you can afford and all you can afford. It
has been our experience that we really haven't needed any insurance and it
has been a big waste of money, but I do know that for the other types of
insurance we have in place - - it's never enough when you do need to file a
claim. Don't read me wrong here - I am not saying that you don't need
insurance or that I don't have insurance - - I am simply saying that (with
hard work - not by luck) you will not ever need to file a claim and it will
appear to you as it does me (a waste) until some unfortunate time when
someone throws the monkey into the bicycle spokes and the ride ends abruptly
:-)

We have a $2M general liability policy w/o omissions

2008-09-09 Thread John Seaman
We do lots of the calcs every day (with PathLoss 4). If you want us to
run a path calculation, what we would ask for is GPS coordinates, AGL
heights, desired throughput, and reliability requirements (4 nines, 5
nines, etc). The outcome of the path calculations also largely depend
on your region, since rain fade is a critical factor when considering an
18 Ghz link. If you want us to run a path profile for you let me know.

Re: [WISPA] OT, roof rack

2008-09-09 Thread Marlon K. Schafer
That sounds like a good idea. But this is a really nice looking rig (only
51k miles) and I'd like to keep it that way. Looking for a good looking
functional unit that will lock down the ladder(s) without the hassle of
bungee cords.

Marlon, Go to Home Depot or a Lowes and buy Unistrut. It has all kinds
of parts and adapters that will allow ou to make a really nice rack on
 the cheap.

It's looking like a very nice rig. I miss all of the storage room in my
Taurus wagon. But, since it's now totaled and sitting in a wrecking yard
 it
was time to get something new. Hope I can get 284k miles out of this one
 too!

4 wheel drive, 7 passenger, Bose tunes, 20mpg so far (had it all of 24
 hours
and no ladder on top yet :-), it's looking like it'll be a nice rig!

In looking around I think I might better off building something. sigh.

It'd take about 2 years to do it, but if you send it down here to
Missouri, I'd get it done for you. ;-)

Rick,
I hate to say this, but you must have missed the big fuss over all this
about 2 years agao..
Back in 2005, FCC gave forebearance to all the Bells for DSL Services.
They don't have any obligations to sell DSL to any resellersand are
allowed to set prices on a commercial agreement basis.

Re: [WISPA] DSL Tariffed

2008-09-09 Thread Tom DeReggi
No, not necessarilly. The 6mbps DSL still has to work, in order for it to
take your business. Just because they offer the a price doesn;t mean the
copper will be available or that the loop will be short enough to facilitate
the speed.

Sure they can take your client on a given day, but that doesn't necessarily
mean they can take your market. There are lots of coverage holes for DSL.

Don't forget to push the value of your repsonse time guarantees.

There is no credabilty in a LEC promissing something that they aren't
capable of giving. The DSL probably has a 30 day response or repair
guarantee. You can offer them a 2 or 4 hour repsonse wireless guarantee, and
deliver it. A LEC likely will likely never be able to deliver that..

I'm not sure there is any significant disadvantage. Other than the obvious,
such as another point of failure, another connection to add loss, mild loss
of energy in the conversion, additional cost.

No, not necessarilly. The 6mbps DSL still has to work, in order for it to
take your business. Just because they offer the a price doesn;t mean the
copper will be available or that the loop will be short enough to
facilitate the speed.

Sure they can take your client on a given day, but that doesn't
necessarily mean they can take your market. There are lots of coverage
holes for DSL.

Don't forget to push the value of your repsonse time guarantees.

There is no credabilty in a LEC promissing something that they aren't
capable of giving. The DSL probably has a 30 day response or repair
guarantee. You can offer them a 2 or 4 hour repsonse wireless guarantee,
and deliver it. A LEC likely will likely never be able to deliver that..

Tom,

You are very correct. In fact, we give fantastic service with same day
response and many other perks that all of you know out. Unfortunatley,
many are swayed by crazy marketing campaigns promising the world. I've
always said that the lies will catch up with them but somehow even
when they cant deliver their brainwashed customers stick with the
LEC's. I'm not saying this is always the case but it is prevalent.
Meanwhile, I'm stuck paying $600/month/T1 and get treated like dirt.
At any rate, there are some that understand the values you mention.

Thanks for your input! -RickG

Even if you have an agreement signed by the tribal elders, the chapter

Joking aside, there is big money in building telcos in Nigeria.

Some Los Angeles based VCs I work with are working with the government

work/sell there is tricky, but once they attained them, things got easier

Re: [WISPA] frequency converters

2008-09-09 Thread Tom DeReggi
Rick,

In all fairness, we have not often used third party Frequency Converters,
because of the cost. Additional input from those that have more experience
with specific models, would likely be beneficial to hear from.

What I can tell you is that it is becoming a popular trend to implement
frequency converter in manufacturer's product lines to lower cost. The first
two examples that come to mind are Trango's 5580s, or Ubiquiti's 900Mhz mpci
cards which are more or 2.4G chipsets with Freq Converters. It doesn't stop
there... Similar concepts have been applied to some 18Ghz and 23Ghz brand
radios, to make them more affordable to make, integrating them with Wifi
OFDM chipsets. This approach resulted in the first 23Ghz to enter the market
under $6000 per link, that I was aware of.

I'd recommend that you look into the Freq Converters made by Teletronics, in
general we had found them to be pretty high quality converters, with no
complaints.

There are a couple of considerations to deploy.
1) when converting from a device that has a wide bandwdith to a channel that
has a narrower limited bandwidth, you often have to use a single defined
channel for that converter model. That obviously can reduce the flexibilty
of changing channels on the fly.
2) Just like Amps, the Freq Conv are designed to receive input signal at a
specified gain. And likewise should be used with a Radio that can output
power at that specified level, to reduce creating distortion/noise. (Specs
should be disclosed by the manufacturer.)
3) There is also a difference betweem DSSS and OFDM Freq Converters.
Personally, I think its more critical to have a clean quality Freq Converter
for OFDM, that typically will use QAM64 modulations, that are more sensitive
to noise..

I think one of the exciting uses for Freq Converters might be to use it for
converting your favorate 5.8Gear to 3.650Ghz. But we have never done it yet.
Nor investigated legality of it for FCC approval

I think the first question to ask, is why the Freq Converter is needed.
Apposed to just buying the correct freq product in the first place. The
answer to that first, might define what freq converter design would be right
for you.
