Re: [WISPA] WISPA TV Whitespaces Meeting with the FCC

2010-04-10 Thread Scottie Arnett
No problem.

We really need this spectrum, as was the reason for my ramblings on the
cybertelecom list about Rhetoric on Comcast vs. ATT. All they were talking
about was the duoply and how the FCC is going to go before Congress so they
have the authority to treat all ISP's as telcos. I was trying to make the point
that (1) the FCC needs to realize there are other ISP's out there besides cable
companies and telcos, and (2) To not auction off the whitespace spectrum
because it will just end up in the hands of the duoply.

It might be a good idea for WISPs to look up their Whitechannel
 availabilty
in their areas, and determine if VHF channels 1-7 are available in their
 territory or not.

LOL! I saw that but dont lose any sleep over it. I dont know if your
very familiar with the territory but it's a true challenge. Remember,
one of my subs is a ConnectedNation Senior Manager and he told me
about this a long time ago. I've been over on that side of the ridge
many, many times in the 3+ years I've been here and the trees and
canyons are enough to send a wireless guy into a tizzy! 900MHz is not
that good.

My opinion as well! I just wondered who is brave enough. Also,
Hillbilly Bob lives up one of the many hollers. Besides the forest of
trees, the steep hills will prevent access to the many even with
900MHz.

Re: [WISPA] Service in London, KY?

2010-04-10 Thread Chuck Hogg
I have not...and have not decided on if I will. They have contacted me
multiple times, requesting me to submit a proposal.

You have to bid to lease the network on a year to year basis. You are
responsible for all subscriber equipment. You have to provide service to
approximately 7,000 subscribers. If you put out 7,000 Canopy SM's (Which is
what they are pushing) that is $1.4M in subscriber gear. You cannot charge a
setup fee. You have to offer internet service for $29.95/mth for 768kbps. At
that price, it will take 10 months to recoup your installation and upfront
equipment cost. This does not take into consideration the backbone internet
cost. You may lose the contract before you can ever recoup the cost on a
subscriber.

If you lose the yearly bid, you will have to go and reclaim the subscriber
equipment. The problem with this is, going to Hilbilly Bob's house to take his
internet equipment away will be quite a hard task.

None of the water districts are going to give free access to their water
towers. You will have to negotiate access. The commercial towers are all
Crown, so plan on $500/mth in tower leasing.

You have to do a beta test on your own dime in their area, providing internet
service. I don't know many commercial tower companies that will give you
access for 60 days at a cheap rate, and who you will get a backbone connection
from for 60 days.

You have to pay prevailing wage for all labor.

Once the network is in place, you are responsible for all and any
upgrades/maintenance. If you lose the bid at the end of the year, you have to
go and reclaim your equipment. If the company that installs the network uses
equipment you don't like, that is not their problem it is yours. If the
network is hit by lightning, you are responsible for replacing the equipment.

You have to provide all of the upfront capital, and they will pay you back
within 120 days. Meaning, you have to put up the $550k for 120 days...before
they will repay you.

I hate being a pessimist, but it is hard for me to be an optimist. You have
the potential of pulling in $210k per month on 7,000 subscribers. You have to
bid yearly on the contract to run the network. It would suck if you put up the
$1.4M to put in the equipment with the subscribers, to have the contract yanked
from you the following year. Good luck on getting those 7,000 subscribers to
be happy about you removing your equipment if you lose the contract (did I
already mention that?)

If they would do it as a bid on a 5 or 10 year term then I would be interested.

Chuck Hogg

Re: [WISPA] connected nation mapping data

2010-04-10 Thread John Scrivner
I submitted my data to them for showing my network on their map. The
coverage map looked reasonably close to what we cover. I see no down side to
allowing them to show that your area has broadband. I can see abig downside
if this map is used for policy making and funding of where to build and you
are NOT listed there. To each his own but I would rather have WISPs
plastering their map myself. It would help our industry efforts I think.

I filed 32 protests during the first round of the stimulus plan, and
 none of them were funded.

Protest long and protest often.   From what I have seen so far, most of
the frivolous projects have been rejected handily.   Don't get all
worked up about the "waste" until it finally comes to pass.   It was
pretty clear from looking at the first round apps that there were a lot
 of stupid, wasteful applications.

[WISPA] When to route?

2010-04-10 Thread Greg Ihnen
OK, I know: "friends don't let friends bridge networks". But at what if the
networks are small?

The reason I ask is I'm wondering if I'd have anything to gain by setting up
static routing (now that the new UBNT beta added this to the gui).

What I have is a satellite internet modem going to an MT box. The MT box is
wired to an 802.11g AP/wired switch (which has wireless clients). Also wired to
that switch are two backhauls with clients at the far ends. One backhaul is a
pair of PS2's (the one closest to the switch is WDS Station and the far end is
WDS AP with clients). The other backhaul is a pair of NS5M's running Airmax
(obviously no clients) and wired to the far NS5M is a Bullet 2M running as
802.11b/g/n AP with clients. All the hardware is in the 192.168.7.x/24 range as
are most of the clients, though I give some clients addresses in the
192.168.0.x/24 range to keep them isolated from the hardware and other clients.
The MT box doesn't allow traffic between the 192.168.7.x and the 192.168.0.x
net.

  ---PS2~~~PS2
with clients (192.168.0.x)
/
Sat modem---MT box---switch/ap with clients 192.168.7.x
\

NS5M~NS5MBullet2M with clients 192.168.7.x

I'm assuming now traffic for all clients transit all segments of the network
i.e. traffic for a client wirelessly connected to the Bullet2M is also
transiting the segment of the network comprised of the PS2's. Is that right or
does the gear (in this case the switch joining the different segments of the
network learn who's where and route the traffic accordingly? I'm assuming not.
So if I made it so the clients on each AP were in a different subnet and static
routed then traffic would only travel the pertinent network segment?

Greg

They are asking for detailed data for two reasons. One is to inform a
potential consumer where you offer service with what speed and price. All of
the other data is so they can run RF propagations for your whole network to
develop your service area. Problem with that is from what I have seen of
their work, they don't know how to do a proper RF prediction. They are using
Radio Mobile but they obviously don't know how to set it up or run
propagations that reflect reality in the WISP world. That being said, some
WISP's have been submitting proper GIS files to show their coverage area and
then giving the data for speeds and pricing. There are a few ways to
accomplish this. Radio Mobile plots will not work by themselves. Those are
image files and for the mapping each state needs to convert that information
to some sort of GIS Vector based polygon. Some RF tools will do this
directly otherwise you have to do a bunch of tedious conversion in other
mapping tools.

This process is pretty much the same in every state.

Does anyone here have any experience with Connected Nation / Connect Ohio on
them wanting data from you for their mapping purposes? They are requesting I
sign a non-disclosure agreement and then hand them over a list of all my
towers, coordinates, frequency's, antenna, cable loss, equipment
manufacturer, service plan speeds. Seems like they want a lot of personal
information. I am just wondering besides mapping purposes what the secondary
uses of this collected data will be used for.

Feel free to email me off-list as well.

I only sent them GPS coordinates with tower height and frequency. Their
spreadsheet was pretty massive so I told them that if it's for mapping
purposes then what I gave them was enough for mapping purposes.

Re: [WISPA] connected nation mapping data

2010-04-10 Thread Scott Reed
There as been some comment on this on the list.
They just contacted us as well.
My plan is to tell them to look at our website to get the coverage
area. The rest is company confidential information.
I do remember some folks in IL refusing to give them anything.
I have not seen anything that says we have to give them data. They make
it sound like it is a requirement, but I don't think that is the case.

Though I read somewhere that that's a hardware limitation. The chipset either
supports it or it doesn't.
