Are there no boat races going on or what, this is the most I've heard out of

It sounds like it has improved somewhat from when I was using the Allot box
back in '97. It would be nice if there was more automation in the process.

On Wed, Mar 30, 2011 at 2:48 PM, Rick Kunze rku...@colusanet.com wrote:

It's been a lengthy learning curve, I've been forming this mechanism
since around 2001 but it all works very well now. I use 5 levels of
priority for customers, Level 0 through Level 4. Level 5 is for
special use when needed and 6 is infrastructure equipment. Level 7
(top level) is reserved so I can reach things in the event of some
other host or interface causing a packet storm or the like.

Then the balancing act is grouping day-user businesses with
night-user residentials, or whatever is needed to lump all customers
into a few smaller groups. Then the total bandwidth is partitioned
into the same number of slices as there are groups of
customers. This becomes the CIR but is fundamentally based on
priority. The burst then comes in from the scattering of priority
levels within each group. Basically residentials are sacraficed
during the week days for any other higher priority packet. But
ceilings are also put in place to keep any one customer from sucking
all the Ether out of the wire. That's also inherent in the grouping
 strategy.

It's always a moving target though, and needs re-shuffling from time
to time as the usage patterns of some users change over time.

Some groups are geographical, but mostly it's random based on usage
patterns. What I've seen change the most over the last 6-12 months
especially is that residential is overtaking business. The night
time bandwidth demands are equal to and starting to exceed daytime
business demands. The former having ramped up considerably lately
with movies and the like. A streaming Netflix standard def movie is
roughly a 1.2 meg stream for a couple hours, but the duty cycle as
I like to call it is only about 50% to 80%.

I have this all automatically controlled with a Packeteer. Eight
levels of priority with on the fly per packet control, partitioning
of bandwidth, and the ability to control both priority and volume on
a per customer basis, right down to the actual type of traffic such
as www or smtp, or Citrix, or you name it. Traffic discovery, makes
graphs, runs scripts to change things on weekends for example, all
 kinds of features.

These things are cheap on Ebay.

[WISPA] WISPA Group Health Insurance Survey

2011-04-01 Thread Rick Harnish
This is a reminder to fill out the Health Insurance Survey that Elizabeth
sent out yesterday. We are also looking at business property and liability
coverages although not included in this survey. Read Elizabeth's post
below.

All -

At long last, attached is a survey regarding your interest in participating
in a WISPA-sponsored group health insurance plan. This survey is open to
all members - Vendor, WISP, and Associate. Once we have the data from this
survey, WISPA's insurance broker will be able to obtain rate quotes from
underwriters with the goal of obtaining health insurance at competitive
rates for all WISPA members.

As a trade association, WISPA is in a unique position to aggregate all of
our members' employees into a large insurable group. As you know, the
larger the group for health insurance, the lower health insurance rates will
be. The first step to developing those rates is to get our arms around who
is interested in purchasing health insurance and how many employees would be
covered.

All information will be kept confidential. The survey is short, but the
more of us who fill it out, the more accurate our rate quote will be.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

[WISPA] OT: Racing

2011-04-01 Thread Rick Kunze
At 05:59 AM 4/1/2011, you wrote:
Are there no boat races going on or what

I sold my drag boat just before Thanksgiving. The racing I'm
pursuing now is done where there is no water left. The boat was not
getting much attention. It found a new home up in WA. It was a
happy ending, he'd followed that hull's progress back in the 80's and
always wanted it. I got a good price too.

I've joined a team doing land speed trials at the Bonneville Salt
Flats. I met them 3 years ago. I had never been to Speed Week on
the salt so that was my first time. I just happened to wander into
their pit. They had problems with their fuel injection system the
way it looked. How convenient for me!

So I fixed their fuel injection (444 car) and the next morning they
set a new record around 331MPH as I recall. I've been invited back
ever since and we've pushed the record up three more times. Now it's
at 343.301. This is for a small block Chevy on gas. We roasted the
engine at the World Finals last year; we were trying for the fuel
record at 20% nitro.

Since there were already a couple Rick types in the group, they
call me Ricco. Around here that's a common nickname for Rick and I
already respond to it. shrug

A year and a half ago I suggested that if they fit the car with a
data acquisition system I would support it. So I'm doing all the
engine tuning and data acquisition/interpretation now.

This year, for all my efforts, I'm being offered some seat
time. With any luck I'll get licensed on the salt by the end of the
season. Should be LOTS of fun! Can't WAIT!

http://www.teamvesco.com/racing2010/speedweek.html

These guys also have a turbine powered, 4 wheel drive streamliner
(111 car) that still holds the worldwide record for the fastest wheel
driven car; 458MPH.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYklVBF25OQfeature=player_embedded

The 111 was driven by the late Don Vesco, the only person in history
to hold land speed records in both car and motorcycle at the same
time. He passed away in 2002. This being the 10 year anniversary of
the record run, we had sponsors lined up to do a repeat. (We
displayed the car in the lobby of the SEMA show in Vegas last
fall.) The original goal was First to 500. One sponsor backed out
so it looks like it'll be next year maybe.

Even Jack Rickard is showing some interest in this. Interestingly
enough, Ohio State U. has a 300MPH electric streamliner. It's
powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, through a 3 phase inverter and into
an 800HP electric motor and conventional drive train. They melt 400
lbs of ice cooling it during a single run! LMAO! It's cool. Most
pits have a bunch of grease monkeys working on the car. In their
pit, it's a bunch of kids with laptops! It's rather quiet when it
makes a pass.

If it were me I would roll back to 3.30 and 2.20 because I'm sitting here
watch it work for a good year or more. Hopefully whatever you're at now
works!

Note you have to reboot to take effect of the firmware upgrade.
